I've run out there at that park and it's not technical but there won't be a lot of flat stuff at all and some pretty steep stuff but not super, super long.

I haven't, but based on where castle rock is, I wouldn't expect any big climbs. You'd be east of the mountains.

That said, coming from the gulf coast, it may still feel like mountains.

Yep, that thin air will definitely be tough. I'm going to keep my expectations low and just hope to have a good time.
Consistency: It's only a virtue if you're not a screw-up.

Yeah, the course profile looks like there's lots of ups and downs. That combined with the elevation will definitely make it rough for my HTX lungs/legs.

What are your thoughts on shoes? I'm assuming a trail shoe, but unsure whether to go with something lighter (Peregrine 15) or thicker/softer (Mafate Speed 4 or Ultra Glide 4). It's probably just a question of comfort as I'll be so much slower than the CO runners that shoe choice won't matter for me haha.

reviving this somewhat dead thread.

I ran the Philmont 50 Miler on saturday. Holy hell, it was hard. almost 12K of climbing and topped out at about 11,700ft in elevation. Living at 500 feet, that altitude definitely got me a few times. I also got the added bonus of a massive hail storm for about 45 mins up at 11K+ feet. temps dropped and my hands/feet went numb for a while. There were definitely runnable stretches, but the course was much more technical than I was expecting, especially the last 7ish miles going up and across Tooth Ridge. Took me way longer than I was expecting, but overall it was a beautiful race/course. I'd highly recommend it, but know you are going to get your ass kicked most likely. I'm working on a race video, but will probably be a couple weeks before it gets published.

ended up with fantastic temps. It was in the 50s at the start. Was supposed to get into the low 80s, but we were up at 10-11K feet during the heat of the day, and that coincided with the hail storm. I don't think I experienced anything higher than low 70s, and even that was very brief.
