I've run out there at that park and it's not technical but there won't be a lot of flat stuff at all and some pretty steep stuff but not super, super long.

I haven't, but based on where castle rock is, I wouldn't expect any big climbs. You'd be east of the mountains.

That said, coming from the gulf coast, it may still feel like mountains.

Yep, that thin air will definitely be tough. I'm going to keep my expectations low and just hope to have a good time.

Yeah, the course profile looks like there's lots of ups and downs. That combined with the elevation will definitely make it rough for my HTX lungs/legs.

What are your thoughts on shoes? I'm assuming a trail shoe, but unsure whether to go with something lighter (Peregrine 15) or thicker/softer (Mafate Speed 4 or Ultra Glide 4). It's probably just a question of comfort as I'll be so much slower than the CO runners that shoe choice won't matter for me haha.

reviving this somewhat dead thread.

I ran the Philmont 50 Miler on saturday. Holy hell, it was hard. almost 12K of climbing and topped out at about 11,700ft in elevation. Living at 500 feet, that altitude definitely got me a few times. I also got the added bonus of a massive hail storm for about 45 mins up at 11K+ feet. temps dropped and my hands/feet went numb for a while. There were definitely runnable stretches, but the course was much more technical than I was expecting, especially the last 7ish miles going up and across Tooth Ridge. Took me way longer than I was expecting, but overall it was a beautiful race/course. I'd highly recommend it, but know you are going to get your ass kicked most likely. I'm working on a race video, but will probably be a couple weeks before it gets published.

Looks beautiful out there! How were temps?

ended up with fantastic temps. It was in the 50s at the start. Was supposed to get into the low 80s, but we were up at 10-11K feet during the heat of the day, and that coincided with the hail storm. I don't think I experienced anything higher than low 70s, and even that was very brief.

I have my first race of the year coming up in late September in Buena vista. Such a great time to be up there…this is my third time for this 50k. Training has been lacking like normal but the heat has usually transitioned ok to the altitude. Hope to get in 2-3 long runs around 20 miles between now and then and then see what happens.

I'm running the Rock Hawk 50K in Castle Rock, CO this weekend. If I race like I trained, it will be a complete disaster.

The plan is just to trot along ahead of the cutoff and enjoy the event, people, etc. It's kind of a mini-vacation for me anyway. Going up on Wednesday and staying through Monday (in Golden) just to escape the normal day to day in Houston.

Sad news coming out of Chamonix. Jeff Browning was running TDS and had a medical emergency around mile 80. He's currently in, I believe, a medically induced coma. There aren't a lot of details out there, and a lot of speculation. It's pretty much just one post being shared everywhere. There's a thread on r/ultrarunning on reddit.

His family has now posted this:
"During the TDS race at UTMB in Chamonix, Jeff suffered a heart attack. He received immediate medical treatment from the race and emergency medical teams before being airlifted to the hospital, where he remains under medical care."

Not that you probably want to kill your legs before the race, but there are some good trails around Golden with plenty of vert.

Keep hoping to find an update, but nothing is out there.

I ran the Rock Hawk 50K race today, a 25K loop x2. At the end of the first loop, I felt good and was running well. At mile 20 it all fell apart. My second loop took over 2 hours longer than my first. I went from thinking sub 7-hours was possible to fighting to finish. I was cramping so badly I couldn't walk. Several times I fell just standing due to cramps. Was a little scary as I was by myself for many miles.

I was in pretty bad shape at times and appreciate the folks who picked me up off the ground, gave me salt capsules and offered their help. Made all the difference.

I'm going back to my true distance now (25K) and will leave the ultras to others haha.

Congrats on getting it done! I think we've all been there at some point. Good job on pushing through.
