Weird leg pain

I've had a bunch of soreness in my left leg going on for a week to two weeks now. Buttocks, hamstring and back (outside) of knee. Whatever tendon/ligament on the back/outside is tender to palpation. It also hurts on the inside front part just above my knee when I run or walk but not when I sit, lie down or stand. Hamstring is really tight feeling.

I've been recently ramping up cardio to include running again. Nothing crazy. I'm still overweight but lost 20 lbs. Now just below 30 BMI. In my 50s. No running for now, just walking.

I've been stretching. My GF's ex has a motorized roller massage table that she kept in her divorce. (Thanks dude). Love that thing. Also had the GF massage with hands and massage gun. Helps but it comes back. I've taken ibuprofen and some spare muscle relaxers GF had on hand.

I guess I'll eventually go to an ortho but want to give it a little more time first and see if y'all had any suggestions.

Is it like IT band pain?

I've had that before. That's more on the hip/outside of the buttocks from what I recall. I've used the stretches I used before for that and that doesn't seem to be the problem. But, I'm not medically trained, so I'll try any suggestions.

Edit: Ok IT band can cause pain on the outside of the knee. The lateral epicondyle may be the spot where the knee pain is. That could be it.

New Q: I've never been to a chiro before. Is that something they'd diagnose and give me stretches? I just don't want to deal with the whole ortho appointment rigamarole.

Sounds like pelvic malalignment. A good chiro or physio should be able to help you with that.

I'd be curious to see if your shoes show asymmetrical wear and tear. If you have time, post a pic of them side by side from the back.

When I was dealing with a bad hip flexor strain last year and didn't know what it was yet, an Airrosti chiro was able to make an adjustment that helped, and gave me exercises that helped some. I really saw huge improvement once I did 12 55-min PT sessions.

How old are your shoes? What shoes are you in? Where are you located?

I over-pronate. West side of ATL.

I have about 4 pairs of shoes. I keep the old ones around for yard work. One is brand new but I have not been paying attention to the over-pronation issue as much as when I was running high mileage. But I probably need to get a new pair and make sure I get the overpronation one and only use that for running.

When I found out I overpronated, I had stress fractures in both my legs. This was back in the early 2000s Good idea about the shoes. I haven't been running, so I haven't paid attention to it. That may be a factor.

yeah, I'll look at that/post when I get home.

I think I'll try a chiropractor

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I rarely see a true pelvic misalignment issue in my office. It is often something people say that they usually have heard from a chiropractor. I am not saying it doesn't happen but not very often in my experience. The same thing applies when patients tell me their chiro say one leg was longer than the other and when I take a look at it the looks almost exactly the same.

Whoever you see should be able to do more than adjust your hips and back and provide a thorough explanation of why you are having what you have. There should be a comprehensive exercise program that specifically addresses your underlying issues.

a lumpy foam roller is helpful as well. Hurts like hell when you do it but it works.
