That is what happened to me, was trying to avoid surgery and the doc (who used to be my neighbor) suggested to stop drinking for a month while we tried some anti-inflammatory med and PT. My wife said she would stop drinking for the month as well. After a month we decided to make it 2 months, after that month we were talking with some friends when we realized how much better our relationship was. My wife's friend decided to stop drinking for a month and she is on month 3.

I travel a lot for business and entertain, most people are very respectful and it often starts a conversation. When we are in a big group or social function I drink non-alcoholic beer or something like soda and lime. As long as people see a drink in your hand they don't say or assume anything. My coworkers love me since they have a permanent DD. Plus being an executive I want to set a good example for those under me.

I love the taste of beer and like a glass of wine from time to time. Almost all beer companies make non or zero alcohol beer that are actually legit and there are a decent amount of wines out there that test good. They are not any less expensive but they are a ton lower in calories. More companies are coming out with hop waters for zero calories options.

If anyone is looking for an app to keep track of their sobriety, I use my spiritual toolkit. You can enter journal entries with prompts about your day. It has prayers and readings too. It's great for reflecting on positives and negatives throughout your day to have a clear mind before bed.

In for another year. Plan is to not drink until after the London marathon in April.

My blood pressure went from 150/100

To 120/84 in a couple months, lost some inches off the waist and sleep is restored

It's great. Energy levels restored too

Agree 100%. It was also nice not waking up in the middle of the night with my heart racing. That happens to me quite often after a night of heavy drinking.

Well... probably the first time in my life I've gone a year without alcohol. First time since 12 that I've been a year without getting drunk.

I'm starting today (did the normal Jan 1 stuff yesterday).

I typically have at least 3 drinks a night...every night. Every single night for years. Weekends I start during the day and have significantly more.

I typically go through a handle of whiskey every 5 days.

Also cutting out Uber eats as part of Dry January.

Good for you. Best advice I have is to keep it out of the house completely. If you have any booze, give it away or pour it out. Don't even drive by the liquor store.

Take the money you would have spent on booze & make a list of things you could buy with it. Reward yourself at the end.

Any thoughts/experiences on low dose THC seltzers as a substitute for alcohol? I have never consumed THC in any form but have been seeing these pop up in the beer aisle and am intrigued by claims that they offer a way to take the edge off without the health effects of alcohol.

I've had several different brands (in limited quantities), and it didn't do anything for me. It's the only experience I've had with 'drugs', and I wasn't sure what to expect. Not good or bad, just nothing.

I went out with a couple friends and had Heineken 0.0 and it was pretty good.

You are a grumpy old man, ain't nothing changing that.

I'm in, hit 4 months sober yesterday. Definitely worth it and over times you find your triggers. My worst one was being around stupid drunk people.

Also got a promotion with several guys on the team being functioning alcoholics. Going to suggest to the team to go sober for a month. Last year worked with one that went from 3-4 handles of vodka a week down to one. Think of he would have gone sober right away it would have caused more harm
Have a buddy who drank a handle of scotch everyday. He has sobered up and completely quit. He was well on his way to an early grave.

These numbers are always mind blowing to me. A handle is 38 shots. That's 3700 calories per day of just alcohol.

I can relate to that, although my handle was usually gin.

That was 4,363 days ago. To say everything has changed would be an understatement.

I'm of the mindset that THC is fine as long as I am not drinking alcohol. I don't want to substitute one addiction for another, but I've never had a problem with THC or marijuana. I actually don't really like it. I've tried to like it but it's not really my thing. So if I can do that instead of alcohol, I'm fine with it. And you wake up without a hangover so there's that.

As someone who works in addiction (and struggled with it) and therapy, this is probably the most amazing Joe Rogan podcast I have ever heard.

You will enjoy it.
