How long do you want to ignore this user?
Whelp... January 1st will be a year dry for me. I think I accomplished what I wanted. I'm not sitting here chomping and the bit ready to drink. I figure I might as well go January dry. I don't feel like my life revolves around booze anymore.

Who is with me this year? New goal is to make it to Bandera Cowboy Mardi Gras - February 20-23rd. The nice thing is that it doesn't feel like a release date... just another milestone. Just another goal. Who knows, might make it 2 years.

Couple of lessons learned:
  • My coping skills still suck
  • I never felt better (physically)
  • I like being clear headed.
  • I am terrified of the first hang-over.

Proud of you Hoose.

I know exactly what you mean about the first hangover. Feels like I'm shot out of a cannon every morning compared to how so many mornings used to feel. I don't want to ever feel that way again - too much to do in this life to spend it dragging ass.

You are a grumpy old man, ain't nothing changing that.

I'm in, hit 4 months sober yesterday. Definitely worth it and over times you find your triggers. My worst one was being around stupid drunk people.

Also got a promotion with several guys on the team being functioning alcoholics. Going to suggest to the team to go sober for a month. Last year worked with one that went from 3-4 handles of vodka a week down to one. Think of he would have gone sober right away it would have caused more harm

I'm in. 46 days today. I did dry Jan-Feb last year. Did well March through June or so, then old habits came back. As in vodka.

Didn't buy handles because sometimes I'd be ok, but other times I'd drink a crap ton of it. So I just didn't buy anything larger than a pint. Every day, I'd buy and down a pint before hitting the 9% high gravity beers. I heard a guy say last year, the "smaller the bottles, the bigger the problem." Very true.

About a month ago, I restocked our bar. It was always kinda weird when we had people over and couldn't make them a mixed drink because I couldn't buy any hard liquor because I'd drink it all.

As long as I have zero alcohol, I can be around it no problem.

I'm down about 10 pounds, even with all the crap food at the holidays and not working out much. It's easy when you cut out a 1000 calorie pint of vodka and about 4-6 250 calorie beers (each).

March will be 2 years for me! I was never a big drinker, but did love a good German or Belgium beer. Alcohol just wasn't in the longevity plan.

I'm mostly in. My birthday is in January, so that weekend I'll have some drinks. I'm also starting training for my next race, so cutting back seriously on alcohol is part of that anyway. Will be pretty light on alcohol in general for at least the first half of the year.

I'm in, my wife will be thrilled as she's not had a drop in about 7 months. I'm up 11lbs the last 6 months (despite working out and being quite active, my diet is crap and I love beer) so this would probably help.

I'm in, if I don't drink and don't die between now and 2/1/25, it will be 34 consecutive dry Januarys.

Have a buddy who drank a handle of scotch everyday. He has sobered up and completely quit. He was well on his way to an early grave.

In with some minor carve outs.

I did really well first half of this year. Then we moved in August and all my good habits got blown to hell. Looking forward to it

And good on you hoosegow. Not an easy path you've taken

I challenge you to keep it going until the 4th of July.

Mardi Gras may potentially cause you to get lit up like a Christmas tree and undo some good habits formed.

That's always been my problem. Going off like a pressure cooker. By the 4th of July you may be more tame

These numbers are always mind blowing to me. A handle is 38 shots. That's 3700 calories per day of just alcohol.

Figured if I'm doing this why not grab some Four Roses to watch the football game last night and get some bourbon in before turn of the year.

Bad idea

He has lost close to 50 pounds since he cut back. He also would look oily all the time which he now doesn't as much.

Have another an acquaintance that lost 70 pounds after he got his second DWI and actually went clean. Within a year of being off probation he is back up to his old weight. His 10 year old son just says he is used to his dad being drunk all the time. Luckily the kids mom rarely drinks anymore.

I've seen too many lives ruined by drugs and alcohol. Everywhere you look in US society you see alcohol. Got a promotion? Celebrate with a drink. Watching sports? Great time to pop one open. Death of a loved one? Have a drink to numb the pain. You don't realize how often you see it until you take a step back.

Yeah. I don't drink at all, so people think I'm always over reacting when I point out that they should cut back a little (especially in the military). But there is something going on with alcohol culture in this country. I'm not against people enjoying a tasty beverage, or using it to let loose a little. But way too many people have low level dependency on alcohol that they don't realize. Whether it's to numb pain, cope with stress, use as a social lubricant, or intentionally get totally wasted because you think it's cool to do so/that's how you think you're supposed to have fun, we have a bad relationship with alcohol. Not to mention there are a number of cancers and health problems associated with alcohol. Try being the only sober person at a party - it is a completely different experience.

This is why I think it's great to abstain from alcohol for a period of time. Aside from the weight loss, money saving, improvements in health, etc., it gives you insight into your relationship with alcohol. And then if you choose to reincorporate it back into your life, you can do so with better insight into how it's affecting you/those around you, and how to have a healthier relationship with it.
