I started working with a trainer and not only has leg day been kicking my ass, but it also makes me feel really nauseous for about an hour or two. Crystallized ginger has always been my go-to for nausea, but I don't want all that sugar.

Is it during, after, or both?
Can't say I've ever experienced this.

I know you've been dieting - are you getting enough carbs?

Second the question above. Also, what kind of workout are you doing, and is the level of intensity significantly more than you've ever been exposed to? Or recently been exposed to?

Plenty of times in my younger days when I'd try to come back to lifting/working out trying to do stuff I used to do except I'd be way out of shape, and end up throwing up.

What feedback has your trainer given?

Ginger ale? Ginger snap cookies? Doesn't take much usually.

You can buy powdered ginger pills. We got some of those while my wife was pregnant and that seemed to help with some of the nausea.

Overhydrate pre workout with electrolytes. I use Liquid IV. With my Tonal leg days I get my HR up to 166 (baseline is mid 50s) or so which burns a lot of water. When you are pushing into zone 4/5 blood is shunted from the GI vascular bed to heart and muscle can causes the feeling of nausea.

This is my leg day routine:

- Angled leg press
- Prone hamstring machine
- Leg extension machine
- Seated plate calf raises
- Smith machine reverse lunges

The nausea usually sets in about halfway through the reverse lunges.

Honestly? Other than the above advice….maybe drop the reverse lunges? You're getting an amazing workout with the rest of them for your entire lower body

Or another approach- put the reverse lunges on a separate day, and maybe another accessory leg movement. It spreads the volume out a bit more without any significant decrease in gains

I basically only drink water with a NUUN tablet added. I am doing 1-2 hrs of intense workouts every day. Is that too much salt?

Nah it is only 300mg not as much as some other supplements.

  • Nuun Sport has a balanced electrolyte profile with 5 electrolytes, 1g of sugar, 300mg of sodium, and 10 calories per serving.
  • Compared to other flavored electrolyte powders:
    • Gatorade Thirst Quencher Powder has 3 electrolytes, 32g of sugar, 230mg of sodium, and 130 calories.
    • Liquid IV Hydration Multiplier Powder has 3 electrolytes, 11g of sugar, 500mg of sodium, and 45 calories.
    • LMNT Electrolyte Powder has 4 electrolytes, 0g of sugar, 1000mg of sodium, and 5-10 calories

This, or move them right after leg press - if it's a compound movement that is kicking your ass that much, move it up earlier in the workout while you still have some energy in the tank, and then finish off with the iso stuff.

Unless your trainer is sticking it at the end to be a purposeful ball buster. I sometimes do stuff at the end I shouldn't just to toughen up mentally.

More rest between sets. No need to make weight day into a HIIT day.

I disagree but Tonal programs pretty much set my pace.. I love lifting day being cardio as well.

Crazy how different HR zones can be from person to person. I have done a 12 hour Ironman at your received zone 5 and averaged 165bpm for 12 hours. Did a half marathon at 1:40 and averaged 184bpm. Wild

This was from a run test I did yesterday. By the end of it I was dry heaving. Lol

Be careful. The hardcore runners on here will tell you that you just never built your aerobic base, and if your heart rate goes over 130 on your long runs, you'll never realize your potential.

Embracing the suck works until it doesn't. The suck can't be so extreme that it dissuades us from embracing it next time.

lol yep! Chances are I've run further and faster than they ever have. My resting HR is in the 40s

They're not wrong...FOR THEM. It's just that every runner has to take their own path. And all the distance running training was written for people who are genetically wired a certain way. I didn't reach my distance potential (sub-4 marathon at age 50) until I gave up the long, slow runs in the heat, and stopped running 6 days per week. Now that I'm training for the 400, I see how we're all just made differently. As for OP, I hope he doesn't lose motivation because of the nausea. It doesn't have to suck. It's not the Olympics.

100% everyone is completely different.

I try to keep HR under 160bpm for most runs. My coach was surprised how long I could hold redline. Probably because I grew up a sprinter.

I sometimes like the sick feeling he's describing. Maybe I am a masochist.

Hopefully OP just recovers more between sets. Every workout doesn't need to be HIT

I felt a little nausea in the middle of my 800 trial a few days ago. Have to say I don't like it much. I liked the 6 second PR though.
