Could be for sure if it didnt heal well. I had an old injury that made a dead arm feeling when trying to throw a baseball. Any other changes?

Knee and left leg pain.

58 yr old guy here. In the trades so fairly active. Work out with Peloton (3 times/wk, pretty hard core), lifting, lots of stretching, occasional swim. Lots of dog walking too.

Left back/hip discomfort started a week ago, just discomfort though. Real pain started migrating down to left outside quad (closer to the knee mostly), almost entire knee (more on the outside), lower leg pain/discomfort, and into my ankle, especially the top. Pain level is about 5-6 in the knee depending on circumstances. Pain in rest of leg is about 3-4, more stiff and uncomfortable. Laying down, resting...no pain and almost no discomfort.

Stretching helps. Taking Alleve daily (1-2 doses). Occasional hot tub. Riding Peloton, first five minutes is torture, especially standing, hear/feel a single knock or clicking in left knee when standing with almost every revolution. Eventually the pain goes away during the ride and do okay. Afterwards I feel okay, actually pretty good! Then after resting it stiffens up a fair amount. Walking a bit is fine, a 2 mile dog walk ends up with a fair amount of stiffness and pain, mostly knee. I have a history of arthritis, have not seen an doctor or PT for this yet. Any idea where to start? Thanks in advance.

Right knee pain was just diagnosed as a pinched meniscus by an ortho here in Dallas

He wasn't very concerned and said the joints themselves look really good. I'm thrilled with that given the mileage.

He prescribed 3 weeks of PT and then a follow up. Doubt I can get scheduled and in enough times in that interval. Got any exercises I can do at home?

Reasonably active 41 year old. Mostly on the Peloton and chasing kids. Knee injury came with a bad twist and step on an uneven soccer field.

32 year old male. Good shape and routinely do Orangetheory classes twice a week (HIIT workouts).

Back in November, I went for a run with my sister and we were circling back the other direction...basically doing a 180. I pivoted on my left knee and heard a noticeable pop. I had no immediate pain, so I kept running. Since then, I haven't had any limitation in movements or debilitating pain whatsoever. I've continued to do Orangetheory classes without any problems. However, I feel pain when I'm sitting and driving, and when I'm bending my leg while in bed and preparing to sit down. I would describe it as a nagging, lingering inflammation. It doesn't always appear when I do those things, but when it does, it's in short spurts.

I'm fearful of going to a specialist and then getting slammed with a huge bill from scans, but I'm thinking it's a meniscus issue. Any advice for me on this?

Im 61 yo male in decent shape. I had a complete achilles rupture 20 years ago and didn't rehab after surgery. I there anything I can do today to gain strength in that leg?

Tons of calf work. Weighted calf raises with knee straight and bent. I have found the calf rarely returns to normal size after Achilles surgery.

I started having lower back issues 15 years ago. Diagnosed (x-ray) arthritis and flare ups due to over-doing an exercise or activity. Mostly right at the belt line, sometimes aggravation a few inches down into by buttocks. Hot tub or massage helped a lot. Twice over the years had 'attacks' and was put on steroids to calm it down. Eventually gave up squats and then running, then a few other minor exercises like burpees and mountain climbers...now have almost no back pain except some minor discomfort, but only if I sleep a bit twisted or maybe strain it lifting something too heavy or repetitive...something obvious. Do a lot of core work/exercises now which I believe has made a difference.

This issue...I have a little back discomfort or twinge that is lingering but a 1 or 2 on the scale. Nothing out of the ordinary.

I also forgot to mention I have been experiencing a bit of groin discomfort on the left side. The last week or so, walking down hill has been very painful (still just left knee). The pain in my knee is still all around it, extending down into my lower leg. When I massage or manipulate it, its like it has been hyper extended...pain when I extend it out complete and flat, and press down on the knee. Fair amount of pain then in the back of the knee.

Still taking Alleve daily but has not gotten much better. Some days are better than others.

I have a shoulder problem that popped up about a month back on my left side and I don't know whether to go see someone, just rest, stretch more or what. Any help would be appreciated.

It hurts ever so slightly just doing any push/pull motion at the gym but really rears its head when the shoulder is placed in a position like below when holding the bar doing squats. This is odd to me because it isn't really under any weight, just I guess the twisting and torsion really exposes whatever is "injured."



The pain is in the highlighted area.



If I sleep on my left side and grab a pillow a certain way it will be sore the entire next day, so I've been avoiding that and trying to not do anything strenuous with my shoulders but this is getting a little annoying.

Any tips or ideas? I'm sure this is common, but there is *too much* info on the internet to narrow it down.

I would find a PT in your area and start there.

Thats a tough position on the shoulder. Kind like how dips are tough on the shoulders. You doing any mobility work on it? Stop using your arm as a pillow and get a bigger pillow to fill the space so you don't use your arm.

Had some prolonged pain up in my left hip flexor area. Like a pinching or grabbing sensation. Example is when sitting with legs extended (body at 90 degree) and raising left leg over an obstacle I'll definitely feel it. Not to the point I have to stop but annoying and noticeable.

Any trauma to the area? Old injuries? Sounds like hip impingement. What are you doing to help with it currently?

Can't recall any trauma or event. Just been lingering for a while now.

Typically doing weighted leg raises with the thought to strengthen, kind of inspired from Knees over Toes stuff. It seems to help before I go and squat but at this point it's obviously not taking it away. I did recently decide to jab my hard foam roller up there last week and it seemed to relieve it also; maybe something to that? I'm just bad about staying on top of it.

Newb to this thread and to PT in general

Brief summary - beginning in December I began experiencing pain and mobility issues in my left knee. I sprained this knee about 30 years ago while skiing, but for most of the last 30 years I was pain free until a few months ago. It was to the point I could not stand for more than about 10 minutes at a time or walk for more than about 15 minutes. My DO sent me for x-rays (which didn't show anything) and also gave a referral to a PT who specializes in fascial counterstrain. After two treatments I am a believer. My stability has returned and swelling and pain have been significantly reduced.

This sounds like a relatively new thing in the PT world. OP, I was wondering if you knew anything about it and what you and your colleagues think of it.

Fascial work has been around for a long time and comes in many forms. I personally use it and think most of it is similar despite how many names they try to give it. Manual therapy has come under a lot scrutiny due to lack of evidence and the transition to more movement based interventions. I think both are helpful with movement being the sustaining intervention.

Do you have any thoughts on the torso twist machine for low back/deeper core muscle training? I'm sure you've seen, it but you're basically either kneeling or sitting and rotating against resistance in your torso.

I usually don't have access to one, but I'll try it anytime I do, and will usually get sore in the low lateral lumbar region. Good kinda sore, note pain. I figure it's doing something, but curious if it helps prevent injuries by helping strengthen the core.

Howdy, thanks for doing this Q&A.

I have a teenager who I've noticed walks on the balls of his feet (tip toes if you will). Never thought anything about it, or hardly noticed until he tried out for sports.

I chalked it up to not being athletic, but have noticed he struggles with balance, squat, general form, and coordination. Google says it could be a result of that walking method after years.

So, thoughts on that and recommended stretches or activities to help loosen those calves and ankles?

Forgot about this thread. I've got tennis elbow that's really bothering me. Worst part about it is, it's most painful in the am when I first wake up (and the pain wakes me up in the middle of the night). It hurts more then than it does when I'm doing the exercises that presumably caused the inflammation. I try to elevate my arm on a pillow, but once I fall asleep, it's hard to control where my arm goes. And I'm a stomach sleeper.

When it's really bad, it hurts at my elbow and in my hand.

Ice provides temporary relief. I've also used my BF's TENS unit a couple of times. And I've ordered the Theraband flex bar (hasn't been delivered, yet).

Any suggestions as to specific exercises I can do to get some relief? I didn't lift weights for over a week while on vacation, and that didn't seem to help at all.

Edit: Saw the tennis elbow post back in the early pages and am watching those videos. But any other tips, especially related to sleeping and the early am pain would be great!

Yeah I think rotation exercises can be helpful but the lumbar spine isn't really designed to rotate. Its orientation is more setup for flexion and extension. I would really work thoracic rotation more than anything.

You need to find a better sleeping position. Some will wear a brace when they sleep if it gets bad enough. The TheraBar exercises are really great for long term relief. For short term relief I like to manual therapy and dry needling for the immediate and surrounding areas. Where are you located?

Any other symptoms? Most kids will grow out of this but you said he is a teenager. Any diagnosis that he has?

I'm in Houston. Any sleeping position better than another? I don't want to sleep on my left side because of my arm. Back is an option, I just don't sleep as well when I sleep on my back. Believe it or not, I tend to have nightmares when I do. And I'm thinking my arm still would need to be supported/elevated.

And just a regular sleeve-type brace, or something else? I did also buy some sort of band to go around my arm when I bought the Therabar, but I wouldn't describe it as a brace.

Back is ideal. Side sleeping promotes tough positions on the elbows as most people end using their arms as pillows.

The tennis elbow brace came today. I was skeptical when I took it out of the packaging, but I've been wearing it for a couple of hours and my arm actually feels a little better.
