Did the 75 minute PZE ride yesterday (think did it live on 7/31). Felt like it would never end, burned 972 Cals.

30 minutes in I was like "geezus, I'm just starting a normal 45 minute ride, kill me!"

Finally started doing their strength classes as well and it's completely changed my mindset about working out.

I really like Adrian Williams for strength. I like his process, and I find him to be entertaining. Brutal...but entertaining

Adrien has quickly become my favorite of all of them. I did a chest and back workout for 30 minutes, the kid was white and talll, super gay and kept calling it "chesticles", but it was actually a damn good workout.

The full body workouts are awesome once I can get past my hatred of lunges.

I really like his stretch classes. I'm doing his live 45min strength on Thursday for my 100th strength class.

****. ME.

That was brutal. Ended up PR'ing by 1 peloton, but definitely wasn't planning to. Now to go lay down and try to stop pouring sweat.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought that was terrible. Congrats on 400!

Yeah, 27 min. in Zones 4 & 5 (plus 2 more in the warmup) has me thinking tomorrow is a recovery day.

I missed my first day of riding on Monday due to COVID.

Was able to get on yesterday and do a recovery ride with Matt and felt good.

Going to continue to do those for the rest of the week. Probably good to do anyways since I'm coming off finishing the "discover your power zones" program that ended Saturday.

I just finished "Discovering your Power Zones." Assuming you're doing that, it's not going to be near as difficult as you think.

Outside of your FTP tests, you'll probably spend 95% (or more) of your non-warmup time in Z2 and Z3.

If anything, I wish they had done a bit more Z4/Z5 work to prep you better for the final FTP, but I get that it's an intro and they didn't want to push it too hard.

Took CDE's 45 minute Chris Cornell ride. Good ride. CDE purposely doesn't talk much in the ride and doesn't singalong to the songswhich I greatly appreciate.

I've been doing PZ rides since last December, but started the 5-week program yesterday just to go through a more organized process, is it worth it?

I certainly wouldn't discourage your from doing it. Any PZ program will work, provided you are following the process and your FTP is correct. One thing I would note, is take MW low impact rides at least once a week. His low impact rides are different than any other instructor, so they are not all equal. He is the only one that I know of that focuses specifically on technique and drills in his low impact classes.

Wilpers is by far my favorite instructor. Even though Day 1 (15 minute intro to PZ ride and 20 minute Endurance ride), I was still sweating my butt off.

Day 2 is rest and tomorrow is the dreaded FTP test, which is always a ball buster.

Honestly even if this is still a build program for new PZ riders, I'll still burn tons of calories.

Think I am at 93 rides so will need to do my 100th live just in case I get a shoutout.

I was finally on a ride this morning! We've been out of town pretty much every weekend this summer, so I've missed the Saturday rides. We're finally getting ready for school to start, so I'll be around a lot more now. I hadn't done a 60 minute ride in a long time and my legs are jello!

I started pz and just did my first test. How do y'all approach these? I felt misleaded and started lower than I prob should've which made the last 5 to 10 minutes brutal.

The correct answer, is there is no precise way of doing it. At least in my experiences. The more you do, the more refined your methods will become. I used to start at Z5 for 1 minute then spread Z5 / Z6 throughout, while spending the rest of the time in Z4. What I found, was I didn't recover adequately, so I would burn out in the end. What I did this last time was start in Z4 and gradually increase output until the last 5 minutes or so.

Yes, I realize this is not exactly an FTP test, but it was a 20 minute ride where I set a PR, so this is what my current zones are based on.

I'll wait to retest and try again in a week or so. I prob also should do it on a different day then when I did... The day after leg day

I agree that there is no one best way to do it. However works best for you is the best way. You will get better at figuring out what works for you once you do it a few times. First thing I would do is make your own playlist and play it on a bluetooth speaker or stereo with the peloton on mute. If you still want the coaching, use closed captions to read what they are saying. I would guess having my own music is good for about 10 watts of extra power when I test.

As for my strategy, I tend to start with a goal in mind and then build my strategy around that goal. After an 8 week challenge, if I am feeling good, I usually expect around a 10% increase in power. So just to use round numbers, if I am working with a current FTP of 200, and want to increase that to 220 via the test, then I know I need to average 232 (220+5% since your FTP is 95% of the test's average output). So I am going to build a slope that allows me to achieve a 232 avg while giving me room to grow above that at the end if I am stronger than I think. So I might start around 220-225 for the first 5 mins, ramp to 230-235 for the 2nd 5 mins, 240-245 for the 3rd 5 mins, and 250ish for the first 2 mins of the last 5 and then all I have left for the last 3 mins. That should put me in the range of a 230-235 avg if I am successful at holding it. If it just isn't there that day, I will figure it out by the time I get to about the 10 min mark and adjust from there, while if I am stronger than I thought, I can really let it fly in those last 3-5 mins.

One of the most important things to me is a good warmup. I can't come in after a 10 min warmup and nail that first 5 mins without feeling gassed early in the test. I typically do at least a 15 min warmup, and sometimes longer so that when I hit go on the test, I am ready to be at mid to upper zone 4 "comfortably uncomfortable".

Yeah, give yourself the day off from workouts before you test and hydrate well. Simple things like too little recovery from the previous day's workout or going out drinking the night before and being dehydrated can make a big difference in the result.

This is the hardest thing for me. I'm training for a triathlon so can't really have a day or week off. I just took the test on a recovery week but it was still sandwiched between a 10 mile run and a 50 mile bike, so not exactly fresh legs. But good enough to get an idea and have targets to train to.
