You *ARE*. That's what I effing love about PZ. Really drives home one of my favorite Thomas Sowell quotes: "Even the same man is not equal to himself on different days." I've done the same PZ rides multiple times with different zones on different days and had completely different experiences based on my fitness level and, frankly, mental fortitude going in. There are always rabbits out there for us to chase--whether that's each other, or ourselves. I'm tryna work on my power to weight ratio while I measure up to some of the absolute animals we have in this #TexasAggies hashtag.

Thinking about FTP strategy for Saturday's FTP test. I've read Matt's blog and understand some of the logic.

This will be my 4th test. Last time I started in Zone 3. I finished the test but I was empty at the end. Set a PR but still empty.

What strategies do y'all use?

I'm slightly geeky, so up until now (I've taken 4 or 5 FTPs so far), I've just started at Z4 and literally done the math in my head trying to drag my average output up as I go along lol. Someone posted this in the team page my wife and I are in. Little more formulaic, so I think I'll give it a shot if I decide to do another FTP next week (still haven't officially decided lol--my current zones kick my ass every workout, but I *can* theoretically ride the top of 'em most PZ rides, so idk--might just need to quit being a wimp and bite the FTP bullet again).

Here is what I try to do....usually goes right out the window once I jump in the hurt box but at least it's the original plan. Here goes...

I do. 20 or 30 minute low Impact ride prior to the warm up. Just to make sure my stroke is in order and get a general feel for how I feel that day. The 15 minute warmup. It takes me a good bit to get warmed up and feeling good. Then the fun stuff.

1st 5 min: Z4 - 4 minutes / Z5 - 1 minute
2nd 5 min: Z4 - 4 minutes / Z5 - 30 seconds / Z6 - 30 seconds
3rd 5 min: Z4 - 3.5 minutes / Z5 - 1 minute / Z6 - 30 seconds
4th 5 min: Z4 - 3 minutes / Z5 - 1 minute / Empty the tank - 1 minute

Probably overly complicated but having it divided up helps me mentally. Not saying this is right or wrong or bad or good, but it works for me.

On that note, what time are we taking our test of Saturday as a group

Did my FTP today using Nitro's advice. Worked well for me and I continued to progress. I think I could have done what Tbirdspur suggested as I would find myself in low zone 5 when I dropped back to zone 4. Looking forward to the next challenge!

Ol T Bird Sowell wasn't lying. Just messed around and broke my 20 minute record. Sessions is no joke. I logged on and saw one was starting in 3 minutes and ended up duking it out with some 20 year old young buck from Minnesota. He got me in the end, but PZ has to help with my new output record.

Sessions is legit. My wife and I both set PR today trying to kick someones ass! My wife isn't a competitive type either, but she enjoyed racing someone.. especially considering she is on the lower end of ouput.. so she had someone similar strength as her to compete with.

I was basically only riding around once a week from September 2020 to January 2021. And the FTP test showed how much fitness I lost. Just retested after 8 weeks of the Winter PZP challenge and feel really good with my progress. 17% improvement in 8 weeks is nothing to sneeze at. I think putting together my own playlist made a difference too... Now I get to go ride 40 miles in the hills around New Ulm tomorrow morning.

The Disappointing: Only 2.5% Increase 323 -> 331

The Good: Increased my P/W Ratio 4.5% (combination of slight weight loss and slight FTP increase)

The Great: It is over!

The Takeaway: Keep working, there is always room for improvement, and be grateful for the opportunity to punish yourself. I saw my FTP from almost 2 years ago (03.20.19), and since that time I have seen a 36.8% performance increase. As DrBeer said, PZ training works.

Did my longest ride yet today, a 75 minute PZE with Wilpers. Pretty good music which helped pass the time.

I have been off the power zones for a while. Afraid to do another FTP as the five times before we're all decent improvements. But really miss power zones vs riding the other normal rides.

Sessions has been good. Like competing with everyone.

First, it was nice trading hi-fives in the FTP warm-up as you blew by me.

I ended up with a 5.4% increase (223 --> 235), which I was happy with. Most importantly, I think I have finally found a testing strategy that works for me.

Second, I'm doing the first ride of the mini challenge that PZP posted to IG (MW 45 min. PZE 10/21/2020) tomorrow morning for #299, and will be joining you on the live ride Wednesday @ 5am for #300!

So I think I'm going to take the plunge into buying a Peloton. Wife wants the one that can do non-bike workouts. Is that bike worth it?

What else should I consider? I used to bike a lot, but stopped several years ago and sold my stuff. New shoes? padded shorts? Other?

All the Peloton bikes can do non bike workouts can't they?

It's just a class you take on the app which everyone has the same access to. I guess one of the screens swivels more than the other.

Shorts are a must. I would also hate to do this without shoes.

I also just bought a new saddle and the difference is huge. The stock one was way too soft for me. 30 minute ride were uncomfortable, but after my first 45 minute ride the ... numbness ... lasted an alarming amount of time.

I would at least consider getting the lower priced bike. And then just using the Peloton app on a smart TVs or streaming stick to do floor workouts, better tv, and not stuck working out solely beside the bike.

I do all my non-bike workouts through the TV. I wouldn't pay more for the swivel screen if you have Roku or Amazon Fire stick. Not sure other devices have the Peloton app
