What's everyone's FTP strategy?

I made two mistakes tonight, the first one obviously going out too hard. Second is something has been feeling off with my riding position lately where I basically felt everything in my hamstrings. I've nudged the seat forward a bit and dropped the saddle a quarter inch or so, and that felt a bit more comfortable.
First of all, warm up really well. 15 mins is about the minimum time I will warm up, but 20-30 mins is better. Second, how much improvement to expect is going to be based on how long you have been riding and how hard you have been riding recently relative to your current FTP. If you are a relatively new rider and have been riding a lot of long steady efforts for a month or two at or above your current FTP, you should expect a pretty significant jump in FTP. If you have been riding a long time and just tested a month ago, and haven't ridden many longer or harder efforts recently, don't expect to see a big jump in your numbers.

If I have been working a lot of zone 3/4 based on my previous FTP, I should have a good idea in mind of whether I am over or under my current FTP. If you have had an increase, the top of zone 3 will feel easy and the top of zone 4 will feel like you can ride that way for a long time. One way to test yourself is while doing a high zone 3 effort during a ride, get to the top of zone 3 and then close your eyes while riding for at least 10 seconds. Then look and see where your output goes. If you slipped well into zone 4 while your eyes were closed, you should probably expect a decent increase in your FTP.

So I start each test with a goal...typically 5-10% above my current FTP if I believe I have gained. Using round numbers, your FTP is 95% of your average output for the 20 min test. So 210 avg output for 20 mins will give you an FTP of 200 as an example. So if my current FTP is 200, I am going to start out the rest aiming for 205-210 for the first 5 mins. After the first 5 mins, I know whether it feels too easy or if I am struggling to hold on. As long as I am not struggling to hold on, I will increase my goal for the next 5 mins by about 5-10%. In the example, I would shoot for around 220 for the 2nd 5 min block. Do the same evaluation and if I still feel like I have more to give, I go up 5-10% again for the 3rd block, and again for the 4th block. When I get to about 2.5 mins left, If I have anything left I am going to ramp it up to as hard as I can go. Generally, somewhere in that last 5-7 minutes you will find a limit that you just can't sustain. From there on out, hold what you can and try to kick it up with whatever you have left for the last 2 mins or so.

One other thing to think about is cadence. I typically start on the high end of the cadence range I typically ride, and then use increased resistance and slowly bring my rpms down as the effort level increases. So I may start in the 100-105 range for the first 3-5 mins, 90-95 for the 2nd 5 mins, 85-90 for the 3rd block, and 80-85 for the last efforts. My natural cadence when riding a long steady level 3-4 effort is in the high 90s most of the time, but when I go to Z5-6 I produce more power down around 85 rpm. Using the higher cadence earlier will reduce the amount of leg muscle fatigue early in the effort.

Jumped my FTP from 294 to 311 last night. Finally figured out a decent strategy for myself. Warmup was a must. Didn't do a warmup on my first two FTPs. Second was pace. Started out at 3/4 of my zone 4 and gradually dragged my average up from there. Idk if any of y'all are nerdy like me, but literally doing math during the ride was helping motivate me to keep my average trending in the right direction.

Starting out too quick is just a killer, though. My second and third FTP tests, I was on pace halfway through to break 300, but couldn't sustain it. And I knew I wasn't going to be able to sustain it about 7-8 minutes in, too. Last night, I held it back just a touch in the 1st and 2nd 5-minute "blocks" (I call 'em 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters, like a football or basketball game), so I had a little more for the 3rd, and more for the final kick towards the end of the 4th.

from all the complaints about Peloton it's the delivery logistics that are turning people off. If they are scheduling now for 7 days a week they need to drop down to 6 to have a make up day. If on the 7th they don't have a full schedule, call up some people for the next week and see if they want it early. The whole thing of bumping people 3 weeks is insane. Plus contracting it out to XPO and JB Hunt was not good since they aren't just doing Peloton, it takes them longer per delivery and don't always know what they are doing.
I ordered mine early August and still haven't gotten it. I've had 3 delivery dates but nothing delivered. So I called them up this past week and asked for a refund and they told me they could have it here by the 18th. I said ok, but if not I'm calling back for a refund.

eta: the distributor that contacted me is JB Hunt.
Mine was finally delivered today! Whoop!

Now to read back through the thread on the best way to get started.

I did Ally Loves Feel Good Ride from 9/27/2020 tonight. That was heck of a good ride plus it was only my second 60 minute ride since getting the bike in August. My last 60 minute ride was back in September when I completed the Discovering Your Zones program after starting out on the bike after receiving it. Pretty proud of myself, got the bike while way out of shape in August, completed the power zone program and at the end of it scored a 330 kJ during that 60 minute ride. Today wasn't a power zone ride but it was a 60 minute ride, and my output was 415. Doesn't compare to the in shape folks but I'm working my way there but I figure that's a pretty dang good increase over five months.

That was good advice tbird. Followed your plan and logged a 10% improvement. Probably would have been a couple % better if I had done it the first time, but I've been off the bike since my last try.

Now I have to get in that last PZE ride before tonight to complete the challenge. So that'll suck....

Peloton just announced they're going to acquire Precor.

I would assume this is partially for patents, partially for manufacturing capabilities, and partially to enter the commercial machine arena. If they do enter the commercial arena, it's an interesting departure from their current "workout from home" strategy. On one hand, it'd be nice to have all your stats logged in one place, if you don't have a watch that does that, for bike/run/other workout equipment they'll add streaming capabilities to, including weight training. But on the other hand, the reason people are willing to pay for Peloton memberships is the convenience of working out from home, and not having to go to a gym. It's be nice for hotels, but I'm not sure I really see people paying for a Peloton membership and a gym membership to use in commercial Peloton/Precor equipment.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, and they bought Precor so they can start cranking out Peloton rowing machines, elliptical, etc, and we're about to see a bunch of new devices released.

I had been doing rides on a Schwinn that is Peloton compatible so I was familiar with everything, but the experience of my first ride on the Peloton yesterday confirmed I made the right decision to get the real deal. The metrics, the leaderboard, class selections, screen size, etc. There are many reasons one can easily get addicted to working out on this thing

Amen to that! This was my first and the experience was awesome. Giant screen with clearly displayed metrics... freaking awesome. It was worth the 3 month wait!

Hey that's AWESOME! Glad it helped a little! Congrats!!!

I'm still getting used to my new zones. Forcing myself to do some PZEs while waiting for the next PZP challenge to start. I kinda slacked off a bit in between my last couple of challenges, and it just made it that much harder to get back up to speed. Taking the non-PZ classes kind of ends up being a break for me sometimes thanks to the whole power to weight ratio thing. I can follow the instructor cues for some rides and never really get above my Z2 or Z3, so I just have to hold myself accountable a bit lol. I know a few folks in here have the same "problem."

Did Wilper's 45 minute power zone ride from the 23rd and really got a lot out of it. Worked in zones 4 and 6 and was pretty challenging. Having said that I need to retest, it was easier than it should have been. My only suggestion, when he says drop to zone one to recover, go to three, one is too easy for this ride

Think I am going to break down and get a bike. I realize the Bike+ has the rotating screen, auto-adjust resistance, but is that really worth $600+ Doesn't seem like it to me.

The screen issue is solved with roku or a fire stick and the auto resistance would annoy the crap out of me.

SR76US

Also, not sure the extra features of the plus are worth it. Like mrsbeer said, you can cast to a TV and the auto resistance will be moot once you join the PZ club.

My brother has it and likes it for the boot camp classes if you are into that type of class or if you want to do stretch videos and still have a good view of the screen without being behind the bike. However, as mentioned if you cast to a tv it doesn't really matter. OR if you see yourself just doing cycling classes I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Fwiw I ordered a "refurb" recently and I'm pretty sure they gave me a new bike anyway. Or at least I can't tell the difference, so you might look into that route. Saves a chunk of change and your bike is still covered under warranty for a year.

I've had the bike since September 2019. If I had to choose between the bike or bike+ today I would go for the bike+. It would be nice to do the boot camps with one piece of equipment.

I'm in the power zone club now, but I wish it had more core and upper body strength stuff on those rides. I'd be more likely to do those with the +
