You can always kind of make the ride your own. I had been planning to do an FTP test today, but my legs were feeling kind of dead yesterday afternoon. But today I felt good, so I pushed the zones a bit above the typical Z3 range for a PZE ride. But whoever Mandyyy09 was (riding with a TexasAggies hashtag), she whipped me by about 60 kJ.

I'm super impressed. I've been riding for a while, and more consistently for a few months, but I've yet to reach 100. You must be hammering down on the rides.

i went back through and checked to make sure i didnt have too many 5 minute warm ups or anything and i didnt.

ive been going 7 days strong for at least a month now. plus with the powerzone program, if ive got somethign that's 30 minutes i typically go out and do a 10 minute climb afterwards.

honestly it's the only thing that's been keeping me sane being at home.

thanks man. feels like yesterday that i was on here asking around whether it would be a good purchase.

I hope the Power Zone rides are as good as y'all say.

I typically workout early in the morning due to my schedule, but always do way better in the late morning or afternoon. Knowing what y'all know, should I take the FTP Test early in the morning, or wait until later in the day? My concern with waiting until later in the day is it may make me over exert during the week, but I don't want to make it too easy, either.

Is the "Discover Your Power Zones" worth doing? Or should I just jump on PZ rides?

Do the FTP test when you know you'll feel your best. The goal is the end up as a puddle on the floor.

I never did the discover your zones. I think jumping in and starting with 30-45 min PZE rides is a great start.

Not to argue with a Dr...paging DrBeer...but I would do the test at the time you normally ride. Realistically, while you may "feel" different about riding at different times, there is likely to be little in the way of true physiological differences in your performance in the morning versus later in the day, unless you are fasting in the morning or getting jacked up on caffeine through the day or something. Riding to your metrics and putting your all into the test should be pretty close to the same, no matter when you do the test. It may feel different, but the ability to make power should be pretty stable through the day. On the other hand, you can always try doing the test two different times and see how much difference you see. One thing to keep in mind though is that if you are relatively new to power training and FTP testing, your 2nd test will nearly always be higher than the 1st, because most people tend to hold back a bit out of fear on the first test, then do better when they have a target to try to exceed in the 2nd.

I can't afford enough coke to do a line before every ride...and I would not survive rides based on power zones generated after doing a line before the FTP test.

Maybe a little off topic, but he post here and haven't seen him. Does anyone know where Tbird is and if he had his little one yet? I assume that is why he hasn't been around, or on the bike in a couple of weeks.

I'm doing my first FTP test tomorrow. Decided Stringer was right so I'll wake up do coke and roll

I did die. Improved my FTP 10% though. Listen to what they say and do it, it's easy to go out way too hard.

It's going to suck utter ass. Probably more than what you are already expecting. It's only 20 minutes, and make sure you don't blow up in the first 5, 10 or maybe in 15 minutes. The first one is a learning experience on what works best for you. Good luck, and obligatory..."glad it is you and not me"
