...and it has just started to scab over so I need to take care of it the best I can. I've been putting Neosporin (sp?) on it almost constantly but I have another problem. Tomorrow I am playing in a flag football game and don't want to worry about it too much. Should I dress it as usual with triple antibiotic and make sure it's wrapped properly?

What can I do to prevent further injury and infection if I really want to play in this game?

Thanks

if its similar to road rash, keep ointment on it and keep it wrapped.

would you really let this keep you from playing in a flag football game? i don't know why, but it makes me laugh to think that you'd sit out due to this injury.

ok, let me be more clear. I have no intention of sitting out this game. What I am looking for is some advice on what to apply to the scab area to prevent it from ripping off during the course of play. As I am sitting at my desk, the simple movement of my foot up and down makes the scab peel away from my leg. Multiply that be 5,000 times at 10 times the intensity and maybe you will realize my concern. Not to mention falling down and getting hit.

honestly, and this is just me, i'd wrap it up, play, and worry about it later. but that's just me...i tend not to worry about stuff like that.

Still, its simple. Treat it as you would any abrasion. Just becuse you have a football game doesnt change the rules of how the body heals. If the scab tears, a new one will form. Just keep it clean. And stay away from staph infected turf.

One word, tegaderm.

I love the stuff and use it when I get strawberries. Just clean it real good dry it off and apply the tegaderm. The stuff is like a second skin. It keeps the bad stuff out but lets it breathe and the abrassion stays moist enough to heal. CVS or Walgreens as smaller 3" x 3" peices but you can pick up some larger ones ar any medical supply store.

This is just some quick advice from a guy who has had his fair share of nasty strawberries from years of baseball. If it is a truely bad burn (it actaully bleeds and took of a lot of skin), use neosporin or something and definately keep it covered while you play. However, you may need to keep it uncovered at home, and let it breathe. You need to keep it clean, but if you keep it covered too much, the scab might not form. It can stay like an open sore, and taking off the covering will be one of the worst experiences of your life.

I should read the above posts more closely. Macpappy's advice is good.

Unfortunately these words on the screen don't highlight his deep southern drawl enough.

Another thing about the tegaderm. Do not put neosporin on it before you apply the tegaderm, this can actually lead to infection. Also, it might help to shave the area around where you're going to put it so it will adhere to the skin better. I have found that strawberries that would normally take weeks to heal would be mostly healed after a week of using tegaderm.

Don't laugh at him. When I played rugby at A&M I had a similar injury from the middle of my thigh up my backside.

Thought it was no problem until the infection set in. It became a more serious problem.

I must have played football with HouAggie and Fumbleruski

I never did anything for turf burns. Now where I once had freckles where I got burns, there is a white spot.

Tegaderm is good product also DuoDerm is another good product. Both have a water proof barrier that you can leave on while showering and will protect the wound if you get dirt in the area as long as the product is sealed around the wound. You can leave these products on up to 7 days or until the product starts to come off. Since these are advanced wound healing products, you may not get a scab to form under the Tegaderm or DuoDerm.

They are great for any kind of break in the skin. They provide protection for the wound while it is healing.
