Tesla is now moving forward with what is likely to be its most expensive model in company history even as its core auto business has taken a back seat. Musk has said that the new Roadster will be the final human-driven vehicle that Tesla ever produces because the company's future lies in autonomy, artificial intelligence and robotics.
What? The "core auto business" for Tesla has always been an "affordable EV" which is the Model 3 and Model Y. And the last time I checked, those two models are still going very strong with the new Model YL trim and the new Model 3 updates.
It's been discussed by many that Tesla is moving on from regular cars, or at least towards putting more energy and efforts into other projects. With the rest of the world catching up to most of their technology, it makes sense to push forward with autonomy as their core. They're far ahead of other options on that front, so they need to push that hard. Their basic auto tech is no longer ahead, so it makes less sense to go that route as their primary focus vs autonomy. Other than FSD, there's no benefit to picking a Tesla over competition, especially since range has been surpassed by the larger companies like BMW with new battery tech.
So no, they are now a company that incorporates cars into their overall system, but they're not an auto company at this point. It's similar to when Apple shifted from a computer company to a tech company that makes computers as only one component to a larger system. They won't make as much money selling cars on their own without pushing hard to strengthen the brand elsewhere. They're taking the smart approach here, even if their automotive offerings get less attention. Which is a bummer for those who still enjoy driving cars instead of them driving you.
If you're not growing, you're dying. And they won't continue growing as an EV company alone.
