I'm currently looking at getting a Ford F-150 and I am wanting to see what other people's experiences with these two engines are from a reliability and mpg standpoint. Also, please chime in on anything else related to new trucks and the best engines out there.

Love the 2.7 for gas mileage and get up and go. I used to have a commute that was door to door that was 59 to beltway to 290 and immediate exit off the feeder. I would leave at 5:30 so very little traffic. I could get 27-29 mpg (system calculated) each morning.

I am actually looking to buy another one right now but they are a little bit tougher to find because they only come in the XLT and most are "upgraded" to the 3.5L

Yes, I have noticed that too looking. I was leaning more to the 2.7 as well. Have you encountered any issues with the 2.7 or any powertrain issues?

I love my powerboost (thanks auto board for the push in that direction), but I use it primarily for towing a travel trailer. It does everything I need on that front, and more. If you camp or tow a travel trailer, that's the one to get. Tows like it's not there and the acceleration is ridiculous; I often have to remind myself that it's even back there. And ive already had to power the trailer with it multiple times, and it does it flawlessly.

Gas mileage is around 14mpg towing, and between 20 and 25 city/highway with the edge in city driving, but there are stretches where it's higher. A lot of the city drive is electric only, which is nice and why the mileage is solid at lower speeds around the city.

Just had my first oil change, so no long term reliability points for you though.

If it's purely a mpg decision go 2.7L.

Otherwise the PB is the way to go.

As an owner of two powerboosts, 2021 (first year, first gen) and a 2025….

I'm biased towards it. But the PB has more off-the-line torque by far, built in generator and can do more like power your house and other things in a pinch, and of course hybrids are kinda the best of both worlds right now.

That being said… they're more expensive. And if you get one, get the 7k generator, not the baby 2k one like I did in my first one. world of difference.

A Lariat loaded PB is beyond awesome but expensive. I paid 90k out the door for mine, including full warranties… and the longer 6.5 bed (which I feel is a must-have in general)

I have a 2.7l ecoboost in a 2021 Lariat trim. It has about 81,000 miles on it. I have done all the maintenance myself (oil changes, spark plug replacement, transmission fluid splash/fill). I just got back from a 2 month, 9500mile trip to Alaska and back towing a 3000# teardrop trailer. No mechanical problems other than an annoying spark plug caused shudder at 60,000 miles. The maintenance schedule calls for plug replacement at 60,000 miles and I thought I would be OK at about 58,000 for a trip to Big Bend/Davis Mtn towing the same teardrop. I limped home at about 50 mph from about San Antonio to Brenham. Changed the plugs when I got home and all good.
I get 22-25 mpg on the highway and I got 13 mpg on the AK trip.
I also owned a 2011 Ecoboost FX4 with 3.5l engine. I drove it for about 10 years and loved it. Can't remember the mileage but it was less than the 2.7. Both trucks have 6.5ft beds.
I really can't tell the difference in acceleration

This. Unless you tow, then PB is the answer everytime.
Another poster said he didn't see any real difference in acceleration. I found, with the 2.7, there is a slight lag when you hit the pedal. Not so with the 3.5 or PB. I have had (3) 3.5 and now the PB. I love it for everyday driving and towing.

Thanks, I don't plan on towing anything. Because I don't have anything to tow lol. Looks like the 2.7 is the one for me

MPG pfffft. ****ing spending $100 grand on a truck, and pissing about mileage. lol.

Get the bigger engine.

Bigger is better. Go big or go home. Size matters. "They" didn't make up those claims for the feelz.

2.7 in that big badazz truck? C'mon, Man.

The PowerBoost and the 7.2kw inverter is great with the travel trailer. We're on the road now about 2,500 miles into a 6,000 mile trip and have had to use the truck's inverter to top off the trailer's lithium batteries a couple times when there hasn't been enough sun.

It's my wife's work truck so this is my first experience driving it more than about 15 miles. We're pulling a small trailer but the truck is a beast, we hit a quiet stretch of fresh pavement today and my speed crept up over 80 and the wife gave me an earful. I haven't calculated the mileage yet but I think we're getting about 10 mpg so far.

We've made the same drive multiple times in a Sprinter conversion van and we're usually exhausted at the end of the day. I always thought the F150's ride was a bit harsh but this thing rides like butter when we put 400 pounds in the bed and another 550 on the hitch.

The PowerBoost eats into the payload weight a bit. I hit a CAT scale while prepping for the trip and we're less than 200 pounds from our max payload weight and the rear axel limit.

Keep in mind mine was like 75-78, and hit the 90's on tax, title, license & extra loaded warranty.

You'll totally pay 75-78 for mine because it's the loaded lariat, the top trim model with the bigger generator, moon roof, 4x4, HUD, bluecruise auto driving, split tailgate with built in door, etc etc.

Not all lariats are equal…. There are 2 trim level packages at the lariat level.

Above mine are two final levels they are 99% marketing :

King ranch - only has the massage seats, longhorn burnt orange interior and silly logo

Platinum - same as my truck, plus massage seats and ugly platinum tailgate.

Mine is basically loaded…. That's why ~92k out the door.

So just an FYI - you are limited in the F150 models you can get the 2.7L Boost.

From the web..

For the 2026 Ford F-150, you can get the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 engine on the following trim levels:
  • XL (Standard engine for SuperCab and SuperCrew configurations)
  • STX (Standard engine)
  • XLT (Standard engine)
  • Lariat (Available as an option on select base configurations)
For the record when I was looking and bought my 2025 Lariat FX4, I could not find anything in a higher level XLT or Lariat trims with the 2.7L Boost. I only saw the 2.7L Boost in the XL and STX models on the lots in the Houston area. I would have considered the 2.7L Boost but couldn't find one in a higher level Lariat trim....

I've owned multiple F150s with each engine.

Hands down I like the 2.7L ecoboost.

I hear chattering that the 2.7L may be discontinued after 2027 and that we will get a de-tuned version of the 3.0L V6 in the explorer ST, Aviator, Braptor, to simplify the production process for Ford. The 3.0L has identical architecture to the 2.7. They're the same family.

Curious, why would you want a a higher trim package with a lesser engine?

Just so we're clear to those reading the thread, EcoBoost isn't what most of us are talking in 'boost' ... the "PowerBoost" specific model of truck. That one has a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid system.

Those reading this thread may easily get confused - so I just want to point this out.

And yes, the off-the-line torque the electric motor gives before the twin turbo's fully kick in is "best in class" on trucks by far. Powerboost's literally haul ass.

Not anymore sadly. Only in super cab or single cab long wheel. Cree cab 157 WB pushes to you 3.5L eco or 5.0L

2023 2.7 stx with a custom tune. I'm putting down similar hp and torque #'s as a 3.5 and it will sip the gas like mentioned above if my foot isn't in it. Currently have a little over 40k miles so the programmer is recent, and it is a night/day difference on the throttle response once I added that programmer. It'll tow a 7500lb toyhauler with no problems. Previously had a 2018 5.0 and prefer the turbos for pulling. You can't go wrong with the little motor, your ego is the only thing that'll tell you otherwise.

Where'd you get your tune at? I'm in the Port Arthur area. Also, can you tell me why or what you got your tune for?

My son is interning with a general contractor this summer. The guys he works with tend to drive XLTs with 2.7 ecoboosts because of the simplicity and good mileage. They usually are commuting a long way across the Houston metro every day as they have to go wherever the job site happens to be, so reliability and mileage are top priorities.

We have two vehicles with 3.5 ecoboosts and they have been reliable as well (both now in the 70-85k range on miles). They have above average acceleration but are more thirsty than the 2.7s. My top priority is not gas mileage, but I want a truck that gets up and moves like a lighter vehicle.

I would only get a PB if you are really going to use the generator. Otherwise you are adding extra cost, complexity and potential fragility for a modest increase in acceleration over the already good acceleration of the regular 3.5.

Just goes to show that there are deals to be had!

I have the SCT tuner. Out of the box you can tell a difference when you load their company tune. I mainly wanted the custom tune for 1. performance and 2. towing. I used a company call "Unleashed Tuning" for my custom tunes. The tunes help the, what I call lazy, shift pattern on the 10r80 as well.

I have a 2016 F-150 3.5 E Boost. Use it for ranch work, pulling a boat a lot and driving into town which is 45 minutes away. I have 121,000 miles on it. It's been totally trouble free except I had to replace the throttle body on it. Easy to myself.
Gets 17.5 pulling the boat and 19.7 normal driving.
Really been happy with it.
Will be getting another.

My 5.0 gets 20mpg, with a solid mix of driving. With the 36 gallon tank, it is really nice to go 600 miles between fill ups

And it also sounds like a truck.
