How to turn a dead battery into a four figure repair and almost a trip to the hospital. Could also play guess the damage.

Wife was going to head out in the 22 GX 460. Came back in "it sounds funny and won't start". Clicking from dead battery. Send them on their way in a car that was out front.

Unfortunately had parked the GX in such a way in our inconvenient driveway as to block everything in. Push it back a little - damn they are heavy. Manage to get wife's car (Q60) out to jump from. Of course the batteries are on different side and cables are too short. Maneuver her car the only way I can - to basically have it perpendicular to the GX as close as possible on the drivers side. Stopping just short of the drivers door so I can get out.

Leave it on and carefully open the door so as not to hit anything. Put my left leg out, pull right foot off brake and twist to get out and suddenly it's rolling forward - idiot operate didn't put it in park. Quickly it is squeezing my calf as it hit the GX and started pushing the door closed. Process what's going on and manage to twist back around and get on the brake and barely get the shifter to reverse as my leg is starting to really hurt - just barely got the brake depressed in time.

Reverse out of the idiotic situation I created. Leg is pretty damn sore but no permanent damage I think. GX has scraped paint on the front facade at a corner. Lil Red got it the worst. Scraped and creased the door.

Got the GX jumped and went and got the battery. Little over two hundred there.

Now get to explain the mess to the wife and take Lil Red in the get the door fixed. Figure that will be over a thousand. Doubt I want that on insurance.

Guess I should be happy I didn't lose a leg changing a stupid battery.

Not my proudest moment. Sharing to remind everyone to be careful out there. A moments lapse can really cause a bad day.

Holy Smokes, man! Better lucky than good! Could have been a lot worse than just a damaged door.

Geez. You are lucky you didn't lose a leg or worse.

Now you know why all the cool Jeep Bros back in to their parking spots.

We probably need a car safety sticky or monthly TTT to remind people.

Everytime I do work underneath my car I have this nightmare that flashes through my head that somehow my ramps, jack stands or chocks are either going to fail. After reading this thread I'll probably check them all 10 times from now on everytime I get down under there.

I'm the exact same way.

I always have stands under it as a back up, because I fear the ramps or jack failing. I make my boys do the same thing.

Toss one of these in each car and never mess with all that BS again

What do you all do with the battery packs when not in use?
Keep them in the car plugged in to stay charged? - any concern on lithium batteries in the heat
Keep them plugged in - in the garage?
keep then in the car unplugged and check charge status routinely?

I gave a bunch of nocos for Xmas presents several years ago. Recently one of the recipients told me they used theirs for the first time after putting it in their car and forgetting about it. Top it off before you go on a road trip and should be good otherwise, but I use mine all the time, probably a dozens of times for random people in grocery store or Home Depot parking lots, or hotel parking lots on a cold morning. I just recharge it after use and leave it in the back of the car in it's case.

Side story: I even used it to bring my dad's 53 Chevy (6v system) back to life. He upgraded the generator to an alternator but an alternator needs a bit of juice to energize the field so push starting wouldn't work. Disconnected the cold dead battery and put the noco on it in override mode for a minute or two, disconnected battery, reconnected, a little push and we were back in business

The last one. Keep in car and check occasionally. I also buy the kind that have an air compressor in them. Here's one on Sale today for $29….

Wow!

I have a "Jump n Carry" that costs about 200 on Amazon. Not super cheap but it will jump anything, hold its charge for months on end without recharging, easy to carry around and I even used it half submerged in a lake once to start a jet ski only to realize it was half submerged and somehow didn't shock my balls or fry the unit. I was impressed (and thankful)

Once it's fully charged on my workbench, I unplug it and don't keep it overcharging.

The one I have stays under the back seat in my truck. In a year, it may lose 5-10% of the charge. I take it out every 18 months or so to top it off.

I have a fear of jumping other vehicles with my truck. I have no clue what issues the other car is having, other than not starting. My fear is that the other vehicle has major electrical issues and will short something out on my truck when I connect the jumper cables. The portable charger eliminates that. Also, you don't have to worry about the cables reaching.

Couple days later. Leg hurts pretty good and is starting to show some color. Not as much as I thought it would on pain or bruising. Pain seems to be as one would expect and hasn't gone into the types that AI suggested I needed to worry about for a crush type injury. Counting my blessings!

Haven't had time to mess with the car damages. Wife thinks her car may buff out (it won't), but I will probably do it anyway to make it look a little better until it gets fixed.

Had actually hooked a trickle charger up before the incident, but it's old and wasn't sure it was working. Got impatient. Just wanted to get the thing fixed and move on to other stuff for the day.

Actually have one of the inflator things in all the cars. They are great. Right after buying them, I saw the kind that combine the jumper into the unit. Was too cheap to do the immediate upgrade. probably need to rethink that position.

My best friend's dad was run over and killed by his own truck while he had it up and working on it. Not sure of the exact circumstances. I fret over jack stands and such to an extreme. I prefer to jack cars up and then let em down on blocks under the tires if possible. Hate being under a vehicle but too cheap to take my vehicles to someone else to repair.

Not even a gramps yet!

Have to revise my pain comment. Was playing with the big puppy and he hit my shin with his shin. OMG. almost fell down crying. Guess that is probably a bone bruise?

Did break down and order the jump start / inflator pack.

I had a small trailer that I couldn't see behind my truck. Rear camera was out too. Jack-knifed the left side (leaving a huge dent), and then Jack-knifed the right side a couple of months later. Had to replace the bed and tailgate; didn't want to file an insurance, as I had already had a fender bender six months earlier.

Several thousand dollars later…

We've all been there.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.
