Looking for a used F150 for a daily driver. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles. trim level isn't really a consideration, just reliability. What's the best engine / transmission combo for the mid-late 2010's F150? Price starts to climb out of what I want to spend when you get into the 2020's ($20k + /- ideally).

3.5 eco gen1 seems like a crapshoot when buying used? I like the idea of a 2.7L for gas mileage, but they are all paired with the early 10-speed transmission that had issues?

Get one built after Aug 2022 to avoid issues with the 10-speed if that is your choice.

'17 with 6-speed is a solid choice but gas mileage is 15mpg or less.

Drivetrain wise 2015-2017 F150 5.0. Believe you can also get the 2.7 paired with the 6r80. The 6r80 is not totally bulletproof, but they have lower failure rates than the 10r80. I've been limping my 6r80 along for at least a year now, it has a pretty significant TC shudder and the lead frame sometimes causes erratic shifting. NHTSA is currently the 2015-2017 6r80 lead frames, so a recall may be issued for them in the future.

Tech wise, 2017 will come with CarPlay. 2016 won't come with CarPlay, but think it can be added by just some software updates. Adding CarPlay to 2015 is more involved than 2016 and certain that it requires replacing of hardware.

My ****s a 2017 fwiw

I'm averaging ~18 mpg commuting around Houston. Driving 70 MPH on flat highway, it'll hang around 20 MPG. Slightly over with a tail wind, slightly under with a head wind.

Old man spec; no level, OE tire size, and P-metric tires

Any difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 on the 2.7? All the 2.7's that share with the 6R80 are Gen 1.

2017 F150 with the V8 with 140k miles. I have the torque converter shudder, which I'm going to take in to get addressed soon, but no transmission issues otherwise

Good news for you. My "17 would do similar until I hit the city streets and then it would drop like a rock, stock setup.

What's the fix on torque converter shudder and cost?

Mine has it but not too bad, 135k miles.

My 2017 was $2700 to fix at 160k miles. Additive only seemed to help for ~5k miles.

This is true.

Time for a trade in.

What all was included in the $2700? New torque converter or what else?

New torque converter and fluid changes that were needed to complete. Work done at dealership.

ETA work was done in Oct '22 and I'm at 260k with no issues since.

I've got a 2015 5.0 with 278k miles. I had a hard shift from third to fourth late last year. I did a fluid and filter change and added the friction modifier and haven't had an issue since. Engine still runs flawlessly and everything works as it should. I'm also still on the original suspension components but I am planning to be changing those out soon.

I started getting some hard(er) shifting on my 2016 (5.0) at just shy of 120. Up until then, I had been planning to keep it indefinitely. But that, the economics of a third car not making sense, and far more highway driving than I was doing when I got the truck, made the trade-in decision very easy. However, I wish I had spent more time as I don't like what I ended up with (see MDX thread).
