The battery is dead but i can remedy that. Any other precautions I should take…most notably with the fuel? How long does it take for gas to go bad?

You should be fine based on my experience. Get it running, drive it, add some fresh fuel. Drive it some more.

Agree. Run a tank of gas through it. A year isn't enough time for critical parts to seize up or all the gaskets to go bad.

I've got a vehicle at 8+ years and it's going to take some work to bring it back from the precipice.
