Any relaibility to this Chevy engine? The 2024 rebates are tempting.

I usually hold vehicles for a very long time. I'm not finding a new motor out there that gives a whole lot of confidence in 1/2 ton trucks these days. Curious on any thoughts.

We have that engine in my wife's Colorado. It's fantastic in that truck. It's got a ton of torque. Bore and stroke are way over square so it drives kinda like a diesel. I wouldn't hesitate getting one in a half ton if you don't tow frequently don't see it being an issue. I did a lot of research on it before buying and was happy seemed like GM really over engineered it and should be good long term.

I've got one in a '22 half ton. I really like it. I haven't done any serious towing so I don't know how it does there. It gets great fuel milage and has tons of get up and go. Nothing but oil changes so far. I traded in a '12 half ton with the 4.8L V8 so it has been a huge upgrade engine wise.

Nobody is suggesting it for trucks pulling 30k. But they can be well suited for people that use half ton trucks for commute and with loads in the bed. Then it'll still pull the boat to the lake once a month or pull your U-Haul trailer to move the kids to college.

My 23 2.7 has more HP and torque than my 2010 with the 4.6 had.

So far it tows a utility trailer, car hauler, and Uhaul trailer just fine.

I don't think people realize how capable modern trucks are.

I used a Colorado with the 2.4 to tow a 34' travel trailer and it did it surprisingly well

I don't have any first hand knowledge, but based on gm's current track record on gas engines, the 2.7 might be their most reliable gas engine for a 1/2 ton pickup.

If they would put it in a higher trim truck and make better seats it would be pretty perfect for my use case.

Good or bad? My Tacoma gets low 20s at best. Usually more like 18 in mixed driving.

A lot of people, like myself, don't want a full size truck. It's easier to drive and park mainly. Doesnt' seem like a huge difference but it is. I went from a 1500 to 2500 to colorado.

Yeah I get better than that often see 26-28 on the highway Houston to New Orleans. But the wife wouldn't go to a 1500 yet so that's what we got, too bad cause the 1500 with the 2.7 was probably cheaper with rebates. Her mom has an explorer and she hates the rotary gear select. So ford was off the list. Nissan didn't have rear air vents so it was off the list. She liked the seats better in the Colorado vs Tacoma.

Agreed, wife was scared for full size truck size. She does 30k miles a year. I'm sure we will get her there in a few years.

These engines have cylinder deactivation, aka collapsible lifters. Is it not logical to assume these will have the same failures that are common in the 5.3?

Edit: I just noticed this engine does not use collapsible lifters, but rather a 3-phase sliding cam shaft setup.

There are some pretty trick things in this engine.

The 3 phase cam shaft worries me the most.
The electric water pump is clever. Allows quicker warm up, will direct hot water to heater core in winter and will continue to cool the engine after shut down which should add longevity to a hot turbo engine. The variable displacement oil pump is proven reliable and provides stable oil pressure and volume at all loads/rpm.

Pulled the trigger on a 2025 Trail Boss with the 3.0 Duramax.

Much appreciative of the rec's here.

I like the looks of the Silverados over the Fords.

This will be my first time around a diesel again since my Dad bought an F250 in '84.

Gotta learn what this DEF stuff is.
