People really hate the 996. Values seem to have never recovered. Hopefully the nice ones will become "classics" when everything else is ragged out. Thankfully the turbo doesn't have the IMS issues

Pics of both? Did you go to the dealer for the shutters? Glad my 958 doesn't have them.

Porsches have a great reputation for reliability for a German car. For a 996 we're talking about a 20 year+ old car for gosh sakes.

996 Turbo. Completely different engine. Dry sump race derived engine. A year ago it was a $90k car. 996 Carrera has the M96 engine subject to the IMS bearing failure issues. Wet sump. Can't race that engine because the oil in the pan will leave the engine starved on cornering.

You can google the Mezger engine.

I never go to the dealer. I have an Indy shop (GT International) that gives me personalized service, knows me, and jumped on the 911 knowing I was down both vehicles.

I'm bet your Cayenne has them.

Very clean! Were PCCBs an option on those?

Grill shutters were added on the facelift 958. My pre-facelift CTTS thankfully doesn't have them

I doubt PCCBs were offered back then. For daily driving, they help. On the track, they overheat. Depends on the application.

The radiator shutters suck. I asked my mechanic if they could be forced open all the time. Answer was essentially no. Poor design.

I have a 986 Boxster parked in NOLA for when I am there. Same M96 engine. Really fun car to drive!

Porsche is my dream car that I fully expect to own one day. I'm waiting for my youngest to graduate from HS. Plans really start to develop at that point

I've always liked the Cayman and have been waiting for the PDK ones to depreciate more. I'm sure they'll be in the $10k range eventually.

Been lurking on this thread…I have a 2015 Boxster. It's a great car, but just in the last couple of weeks, the top has been giving me trouble.

It won't go all the way down, and stops with about 1/4 of the way left to go. I have to toggle the switches (put the top partially back up and then lower it again) to get it to lower completely.

Going up, it gets stuck again, but not at the same point. It's maybe 1/3 of the way up. Putting it back down and then putting it up again sometimes fixes the problem, as does restarting the car. Sometimes I get a fault error on my dash but not every time.

Porsche forums tell me it's faulty sensors that are $1600-$2000 to replace because you have to take the trunk apart to get to them. I want to hold off for now because I just put new tires on the car and wasn't expecting this expense.

Anyone else dealt with this? If so, how long were you able to procrastinate on the repair? Did your top ever get completely stuck?

What are those blues? Sapphire and ? On the search for a 718 and would consider Sapphire

I left a shop light between the clamshell and body when working on my transmission. Loud POP! rendered the system inoperable and, not being particularly conceerned about it... removed the hardware and went the manual route. I can open/close the top in less than half the time, and I get to karate chop the vinyl window.

Go manual and forget about it.

The tops are pretty complex between several sensors and rams and motors. It would be hard to diagnose from afar.

If you can find someone with a PIWIS or Launch type scanner that can pull Porsche module codes, I'm happy to look in PPN service data to see if there's any diagnostic steps. Having a code works best. Their service data for 3rd party "shops" isn't the most comprehensive.

I can also pull all your option codes, PCM enabling codes, and service history if interested.
