There was a rumor about a mid-engined Mustang debuting at Monterrey Car Week. Now there is a supposed leak, but it doesn't look to be mid-engined.

I guess technically it could be considered mid-engined if they put the ecoboost from the Ford GT just behind the front axle and pushed the front seats back to make room (while removing the rear seats)

This is more like a front mid engine. The front of the valve covers are behind the center point of the front axle.

It will have a driveline set up like the C5 or AMg GT with the torque tube and a rear mounted transaxle unit, and inboard mounted diagonal adjustable coil overs. And the car will make heavy use of magnesium parts.

Ford has lost their damn minds.

I know someone will buy it, but that's supercar territory. Fully loaded Aston Martin vantage plus a new raptor still gets you out the door for what this will cost.

Do I want a GT3 or a mustang?

Chevrolet got the new mid engine corvette right and did it at an affordable price point. If Ford wanted to do this, why not brand a whole new vehicle? Why is it a mustang (same idea as the electric one, why mustang?)…

Yeah this is not intended to be something you buy instead of a Corvette. It's a supercar with Mustang branding.

A bad financial bet compared to the S&P Index, but beat the pants off the depreciation of Aston Martins mentioned earlier in the thread.

Ford has their work cut out for them -- the Chevy entry was a cultural sensation.

Just in time for Chevy to quit making them.

It is interesting that just as Ford is almost out of the "car" business, they are getting back into motorsport -- including a return to F1.

The Mustang GT3 will have to abide by the class rules. It won't be in a participation trophy class with basically no rules like the Hendrick Racing entry.

Yeah the class system gets pretty convoluted between the IMSA and FIA WEC endurance races. Hope it is more uniform next year. I also mainly follow F1 and also Nascar

A mass produced car built at the same Bowling Green plant as the other Corvettes versus a limited run of cars designed and assembled by Multimatic. Yes, it will be worth more

I guess the main takeaway on the "why?" question from earlier in the thread is that Ford is selling these to the public because they need to homologate the model for eligibility in the GT3 class.

Why Ford is investing heavily in racing is less clear to me.

Even Ford of Europe only sells three pure "car" models: the Mustang, Focus, and Fiesta. Maybe they are trying to increase Mustang sales overseas?

I like it -- but it feels like they are struggling with strategic direction.

The older I get the less I care about overpriced halo cars. Mass production of affordable sports/muscle cars is much better for the hobby. It seems like that is being largely abandoned in favor of producing halo cars that serve little purpose other than marketing and collecting dust in an investors garage. All the cars that were once affordable and fun will become relatively expensive EVs that lack the visceral feel and sensory experiences of the cars they replace.

Agreed.

My dad's first car was a Mustang. His next was a Plymouth Cuda. He bought them both himself, working on the weekends and during the summer. I know several people who did something similar.

The average kid/family can't do that today.

If someone would come out with nice looking muscle car, that was inexpensive, it'd be a hit. But what's the incentive when the CAFE standards punish auto-makers for doing that?
