So my baby boy is turning 15 next Saturday and the time has come to look for his first truck. He has grown up around me working on trucks and jeeps and has helped me here and there, but lately he expressed interest on fixing up a truck that can be his first. Needless to say I am very excited about this!!!

Currently I'm hitting up marketplace pretty hard and also driving around the BCS countryside looking for a field find. Looking for anything from 67-97 GM trucks, Blazer/Jimmys, Ford trucks or broncos. Do any of you fine men or women have something that needs work that you are looking to offload or know someone who is? Or any good advice for places I may not be looking? I appreciate all input, and when the project starts there will be a nice thread with updated picture progress.

Two door Tahoes have gone up crazy in price.

This is my all-time dream car. Had friend in high school that had a lifted black one with a grill guard and he traded it in and got a Prius.

Man, I remember in high school wanting a 2 door blazer/Tahoe sport edition, red with the black fender flares and grille.

Two door Tahoe/Yukon 4x4 are still pretty affordable if you're looking for an actual project vehicle. The 2wd models are hard to find and spendy when you do.

67-72 are certainly sky high and I wouldn't put a HS kid in one to DD. My vote is GMT400 truck, they're raising in value but deals can still be found. Peruse Craigslist and FB marketplace multiple times a day and be ready to go at moments notice

Having owned several GMT400s, I am definitely keeping an eye out for those too!

I was living that dream/nightmare until it came time to drive a carpool and the little snivelers couldn't get in a lifted 4x4 without assistance. The truck was 11 years old when I let it go.

Fun truck but it was a POS. Always breaking down or limping along with leaking coolant. AC had to be replaced, Transmission planetary gear seized and cracked, U-joints failed (body lift so no drivetrain impacts), heater hose broke off the intake manifold. radiator leaked, heater core had to be replaced, 2 water pumps, an alternator, and on and on….

But I loved that truck.

Did ya put big ol' mud tires on it? I imagine that had an impact.

Not too long ago, I had a kid ring my doorbell asking if my truck was for sale (77 longbed K10) while his dad sat in their truck on the street. Told him it was not.

OP, keep searching FB marketplace as there have been some good finds if you're a true buyer.

I have a '99 2-door 4x4 Tahoe Sport that I might be willing to part with.

Brief History:
Bought in 2016 for $4K for Son #2 to drive in high school (188K miles) and put about $2K into it (brakes, shocks, catalytic converters, exhaust, stereo, etc.).
Listed for sale here in 2020 for $5K (I think) with 202K miles.
Son #1 needed it later in 2020, so I kept it and put another $4K or so into it (complete A/C, tires, steering box & lines, oil pressure sensor, etc.).
It's been sitting in my shop for the past 2 years. Has 209,075 miles currently and needs new catalytic converters (again)..
Not really sure what I'd want for it but if anyone is interested, I can upload some photos and work out what I'd want to get for it.

Full disclosure: My first vehicle was a 1973 GMC Jimmy. I kept it until 2006 or so and I still kick myself for selling it. That's the reason I bought this for my son in the first place. Part of me wants to keep it, but I really don't need it and, if I'm honest, I'll probably never use it.

Still a rookie, so the best I can do is links (I think). Battery's dead and it's sitting in my cramped shop.
I'm in NW Tarrant County.

That's a fine looking survivor Tahoe. I can definitely see a few things me and my boy can wrench on. Any ideas on what price you're looking for?

That's a fine looking Tahoe, but I'm gonna have to let silvy have this one. Want to find something a hair cheaper, but that Tahoe is definitely worth what you want for it.

And we all could use a new silvy build thread to be honest

I have two 15 year olds and originally thought about getting them an old classic pickup as a first vehicle. Then I was reminded that while those trucks are cool, you need to get one recent enough to have modern safety features like airbags. I don't know what year-range airbags became common.

My daughter wants a square body next year when she turns 16. And I think I'm gonna say no. We were in wreck that totaled my Tundra several years ago and everyone walked away without a scratch.

She's probably going to get my wife's 4Runner instead. I'm sure she'll survive.

My brothers kids are newer drivers (high school and college freshman) and he got them each 4Runners. He was the one who cautioned me against a truck that predated airbags.

That sounds like a scam. Good quality survivors can bring over $15 easily.

I'll admit to being a cheap ******* and $10k is more than I'm willing to spend on it as well, but not saying it isn't worth that.

Late December I took a last minute flight to SC with intention to buy a 1995 2dr Tahoe. As I was exiting for the airport, I got vin from seller and was able to run Carfax. It came back as starting life in rust belt, issued a salvage title in NC, and the issued a clean title in SC. Proceeded with travel as it was only costing me time -and a few dollars.

Got there to find that the body was good for beater status, frame a little rusty, but not bad by any means. However, it drove terrible. Felt very "darty", severe lack of power, and transmission issues. Told seller it was too much of a project for me to take on and he dropped down to $3800, but I still declined.

I ended up driving the rental car from Laurens, SC to Houston as this was the same day that SWA ****ed up every airline/flight in the US.

Maybe it's time for me to admit that I'll never get the money out of it. Like I said, I'd love to have my $10K back, but I'd also love to have a full head of hair and that's not happening.

I'm open to offers. If anyone wants more information, feel free to call or text me at eight 1 seven six 88 two 55 four.

I'm not sure about Ford, but GM 1500 trucks had driver side only airbag in '95 & '96. Passenger side airbag was introduced in '97.

2500 & 3500 trucks didn't get airbags until GMT800
