I have mostly used H-E-B diesel in my '22 RAM Cummins but Just down the next exit I can save $10 at Valero which is $3.39/gal vs $3.75 at HEB. Is Valero that bad?

Likely comes from the same fuel terminal, and in some cases even the same delivery truck.

No, it is not 'that bad.' There's a reason diesel's have good fuel filters; to filter out the water/possible contaminants.

Experts say that HEB runs the best oil refineries in the country.

In the US there's no differentiator in diesel other than the bio content. it's all the same with no special additives added like in in gasoline.

Several of the majors have attempted to find ways to differentiate their diesel, but they've never been able to extract extra value.

I will say HEB has the slowest pumps in Texas.

There is no difference in quality. Depending on where you are located it may come from the same refinery and fuel terminal.

Pilot truck stops in the Panhandle and New Mexico are routinely as much as a dollar a gallon higher than other local stations.

Anyone know why?

I assume they have some sort of driver rebate/reward program that makes truckers want to stop there. And that the company pays for the diesel, not the trucker, no questions asked

I think Pilot has their own supply chain setup in that region compared to others. I don't know the details of their rebate program but most larger chains do have something in place like that.

*edited because I misread the question

Valero has Top Tier gas. I have a buddy in the chemical business and Valero is one of their clients. He said they buy the good additives/detergent for their gasoline.

No clue if the same goes for diesel, but I'd assume it's about as good as you'll find.

Sounds like Valero is that good….get a 6 pack on top a fillup for the same price as just a fillup at HEB

Hate having to fill up at HEB. So wierd how they can put in brand new pumps and them be slower than the ones before

Top tier is used by other retailers as well. I am not a chemist or professional mechanic, but at a concentration rate of 1 part per 5,000 or 10,000 I have a hard time believing that it makes that much difference. They do not do anything to "enhance" their diesel, it is the same as all the rest. Some retailers may have more Bio in their diesel compared to others if that matters to you. Look for the stickers on the pumps as they have to legally declare how much Bio content may be in the diesel.

What this means in reality is that Valero uses the terminal additive and doses their loads of gasoline with about 2x the epa minimum. Most of the majors (Chevron, XOM, Shell) have their own proprietary additive that does at that level or higher.

For diesel there's nothing like that to differentiate their fuel (nobody has it).

Probably from the same refinery and fuel terminal.

Well, to be fair Exxon and Mobil stations claim to have superior diesel (branded Diesel Efficient).

Valero makes up the difference with all the skimmers on their pumps.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

I swear I read on this forum before that slow pumps=dirty pump filters and buy somewhere else.

As stated most likely comes from same refinery, terminal, and truck.
