Thanks to yet another cosmic kick to the crotch, it looks like I am going to have to get rid of my truck and buy a gas-sipper. Any recommendations for a relatively inexpensive car for a 110 mile daily commute in the hell that is D/FW traffic?

Good Lord

Can you not just move (assuming your job is not in a neighborhood near the Cotton Bowl)?

I'd buy the lowest mileage newest Corolla or Honda Fit for $8-10$k that I could

How cheap are you trying to go? Of all the gas sipping rental cars I've had, the Kia Forte was by far the best.

ETA I'm planning to sell my 2013 Golf soon in the $5.5k range pending any repairs I make prior to sell.

Let me know when you're getting ready to sell. I have a buddy looking for a first car for his daughter and a Golf would be great, especially considering the way you take care of your stuff. whoop 03…….at…gmail dot com.

Sorry - 55 each way - 110 total. Can't move due to being tethered here with my wife's business.

Thank y'all for the suggestions. Silvy, Paintrain, I may reach out to you on your offerings.

110 miles a day is not fun, but not terrible, either. I commuted from Navasota to Houston for years - 3 years with 130mi round trip and 1 year with 108mi round trip. One year was in an F150 Lightning and the last year I commuted in a 2012 Wrangler JKU because I wanted something fun that would keep me interested in the drive. I was filling up 3 times a week, but It wasn't as bad as you'd think.

My suggestion is to find something you enjoy driving versus looking for a beater commuter. At $3 gas and 550 miles a week, you're only talking less than $50 a week when comparing 16mpg to 30mpg. That's brown bagging lunches instead of eating out. My thought was that if I was going to be stuck in a vehicle for 2 hours a day, at least make it something that's fun to be stuck in.

Buy a corolla or civic new. Don't buy those used. Yes they last a long time, but used ones cost almost as much as new ones. Not worth it.

Buy a the mazda, kia, hyundai, ford or chevy equivalent used. They lose value more quickly and are actually worth buying used, and last almost as long as the honda and toyota if you change the oil regularly.

My commute is 90 miles round trip. Just bought a Corolla Hybrid new and have been very happy with it so far. 55 miles per gallon, and the electric motor gives the engine a boost when starting from a stop. So it only feels a little like a go cart. I looked at other hybrids, but only Toyota goes to 150,000 miles with their electrical system warranty. If you're not going hybrid then there are a lot of good options.

I used an old Lexus LS430 for my super commute from college station to Houston. Didn't care about the gas mileage as much as the comfort.

The driving takes a toll on your mind and having a quiet comfortable car reduces fatigue. I would also consider an Avalon even though I don't use a 4 prong.

Civic SI / V-6/Ecoboost Mustang - good mileage, more fun to drive.

I drive my Sequoia at least 80 miles/day, M-F, during the school year. We did the math and a more fuel-efficient vehicle only saves us a couple thousand annually… at most.
