There is certainly a heavy usage of all caps and tons of posts, so if hysterics were involved, I could see the interaction imploding
I was (and still am) in Florida with family when this incident occurred. As you can imagine, the dealership put us into a position where my boyfriend basically stranded unless he bought the more expensive car they offered him or paid for a second car rental. I became extremely upset at this situation because I wasn't with my significant other at the time of the incident. My significant other is an international student, so he wasn't too familiar with how shady and deceptive dealerships can be in America, and this situation was the last thing we could have imagined would happen to him. It was a terrible situation because we don't make very much $$$, and so like $300 is worth a month of food for us. Glad to see though that the GM in another forum has been living really nicely and profiting off customers like us, who are bait-and-switched. All around, this has been a nightmare of a situation. But I mean, who am I to expect that dealerships would have have an OUNCE of morals and not *****over their customers (who went through a pretty ****ty situation recently with a car accident that resulted in our car being totaled) this badly. They used our sh*tty situation and excitement at finally being able to get a new car of our own to their advantage, leaving us with a $300+ in rental car fees that could have been COMPLETELY AVOIDED from the start.
I don't know what other side there is to this story, as it's pretty cut and dry what happened. We were lured into the dealership, under the pretense that the car would 100% be held for us. They sent us the contract, which we sent back with our demands and then told us we needed to come into the dealership to finish up everything else. They told us it would be no problem holding the car until we got there, and we made sure to emphasize how we DIDNT want to go out to the dealership if the car couldn't be sold to us. They guaranteed this, and had us fill out a credit application and take out a cashier's check in their name. We did all of the above. The morning prior to our appointment, my boyfriend made sure to once again call College Station Hyundai to make sure the car wasn't sold and would be held for us. They confirmed this with him. There was MULTIPLE opportunities for them to tell us that their dealership is actually first-come first-serve, BUT NEITHER JOHN OR SHAUN revealed this. Once my boyfriend got to college station, he returned his rental car, (thinking he would be driving home the brand new car). Afterwards, he hopped in an Uber and made his way to the dealership. During the Uber ride, THEY CALLED HIM to make sure he was still coming in and to confirm the car was ready for us to purchase. My boyfriend was shown around the car when he arrived. Once John (the salesman) finished up with a customer, he went to "go get the paperwork", but came back and told my boyfriend that actually it had already been sold. Then he proceeded to try and upsell him other cars. It's a classic bait-and-switch situation. I just can't believe they waited until last minute to tell him that "hey were actually a first come first serve dealership, and the car might sell before you get here." We made sure to inform John and Shaun multiple times throughout our calls that we did NOT want to come in if the car wasn't guaranteed to be sold to us. They told my boyfriend they decided to sell the car b/c the other person was willing to pay a higher price. It's a sh*t situation, that ended up costing us $300+ in rental car fees that could have been completely avoided had College Station Hyundai been TRANSPARENT with us from the start.

I'm not saying it wasn't crappy to do what they did, if the alleged story is true. I wouldn't put it past any dealership, especially a Keating business.
I'm just saying from an outsiders perspective and as someone who has been in sales for 15+ years (granted B2B not the general public) if you communicated with them in the same manner you've posted on multiple texags threads in the past few hours, it's certainly possible they were hoping for an opportunity to sell to someone else, if the option presented itself.

Yes! They agreed to it from the first phone call. They sent me an email with the contract to have all of the demands in writing. They told me they couldn't take a deposit over the phone, and would do everything in person once we arrived, as the car would 100% be held for us.

Oh no! I've always been really good with communicating with sales people, especially after working a few years in Customer Service Sales at Williams Sonoma. None of these "emotions" came out until my boyfriend called me to tell me that they had sold the car and were trying to upsell him one for $40,000. That's when I had realized that we had been completely bait-and-switched, and were now left with $300+ in rental car fees, which made me extremely upset and angry. The sales people and manager had COMPLETELY lied to us throughout the whole process, going as far as to even showing my significant the car they "held for us" when he arrived to his appointment.
Just reached out to the GM of College Station Hyundai over Instagram! Here's to hoping he'll actually respond to this thread and do the bare minimum by compensating us for the $300+ we lost in rental car fees going through this nightmare of a situation.

Both the sales manager and sales person agreed to it over the phone. They then told us we wouldn't need to do anything further for the transaction and all the papers would be ready for us the next morning. They told us the car was "ours," and had us go ahead and fill out a credit application and take out a cashier's check in the dealer's name since the car was "ours" at this point. We did everything they instructed us to do in order to secure and purchase the car. They told us over the phone they had prepared all the papers for us to purchase the car and that we had done everything we needed to secure/buy the car the next day. We asked to put down a deposit online, to which they said they could the deposit take it in person, but that this wouldn't be a problem since we had already come to an agreement and done everything they needed us to. If there was something else they needed us to do to "secure" this car, they made no mention of it anywhere.

I'm actually a super nice, bubbly person. This has been the first time I've ever had to go on forums to spread the message about a sh*tty situation. The whole situation costed us over $300 which means a lot to us as students. But also, as a consumer who recently bought a car of her own, I'm shocked that these types of scummy dealerships are allowed to continue operating. It's no wonder that Teslas have become so popular, especially when consumers know they won't have to negotiate with a salesperson through the process. Everyone pays the same $$$, and can elect to add on packages to their car without being pressured by a salesperson during the car buying process.
Cut her some slack. From the sounds of it they are in a tight spot with money, had to buy a car unexpectedly, are now out $300 which would have paid for a month of groceries, and still have no car. I'd be a little upset if I were her as well, although I'd probably turn off the caps lock on my keyboard.

Yeah, I'd be pissed off too. Based on reputation and what is described here, sounds like these dudes are careful about what they put in writing at the very end vs verbal to leave themselves room to screw someone
FYI, agreement over the phone is not binding. Just so you are better prepared for negotiations next time. They needed to have signed the document agreeing to your bottom line.
It sucks that they treated your significant other badly. I will say that this is what you would get at most dealerships so hopefully you have learned not to trust what anyone tells you on the phone.

We informed the dealership about the sh*tty position we were in (being that our car had been totaled recently), and were upfront about wanting to buy their car only if we could 100% secure the car since we needed to pay for a rental car. We did everything they asked for to secure the car! We not only spoke to the salesman, but the sales manager about whether we had done everything to secure the car. The told us yes and that there was nothing else for us to do to secure the car as it was now "ours." If there was anything else they needed from us to secure the car, then why didn't they tell us through the multiple calls we had with them (both the night before and morning of purchasing the car). We kept in close contact with them to make sure we weren't missing anything. Despite them knowing of the sh*tty situation we were in, they still decided to bait-and-switch us into coming into the dealership and tried to sell us a more expensive car ($40k) which wouldn't even arrive at the dealership for two months. We needed a car now.
Yeah, it may not be a contract, but I'd at least want that deal sheet signed/initialed in some way. In the end, they left only a paper trail of what you were willing to do, not them
Yep. He actually recruited from A&M in the late 90s. He offered me a job at Tomball Ford when I was young dumb and still pretty immature.
In writing vs over phone may be technically correct but I'd always prefer to do business with someone that does the right thing rather than hides behind some outs
