I'm getting real tired of retiring good Volvos.

But I'm so thankful that they are built the way they are....

Daughter and Her Mom were coming back home from the gym last night. 55 mph intersection. They had the green light, and a guy coming the opposite way had a flashing yellow. He just turned directly into them.

My Wife is not injured, but pretty shook. My Daughter has a huge cut on her forehead above her left eye. Took 4 subdermal stitches and 9 stitches on the surface. It was weird to just see her skull like that. Her left arm looks like it was hit by buckshot. Lots of cuts, and they got most of the glass, but there's still some in there.

The internal crash structure did a fantastic job. The steering wheel and dash are shoved over quite a bit. The A pillar held up very well. The drivers door is crammed against the drivers seat, but the intrusion into the passenger compartment was minimal. This car is a 91. It only had a steering wheel airbag and it didn't go off since it wasn't a frontal collision.

Other driver was a hit and run. He racked up a felony charge last night, with the H&R, and the Failure to Render Aid. His front license plate was left at the scene. Also this intersection is by a fire station, so they have traffic cameras that caught the whole thing.

Damn - glad to see the old brick held up. Sucks that so many people can't drive worth a crap or don't take the responsibility seriously.

Damn, could've been so much worse. Glad to hear your family is ok.

Sorry about your kid needing stitches. I think that driving is the most dangerous thing that we do.

What was the felon driving?

What was the other person driving that they drove away from that??!!?? Had to have caved in the radiator and front end of their ride

Very glad the family is ok.

We had a neighbor with a car parked out front get hit, driven up over the curb, a few car lengths down the sidewalk and into their rock mailbox - destroying the parked car and the mailbox. Perp was able to drive away (according to witnesses) in a Dodge truck. I know Dodge trucks are notorious for spontaneous combustion, but I think it demonstrates the benefits of being in a full-sized truck when it comes to these types of accidents. Not sure what the perp was driving here, but I'd bet it was a full-sized truck (or a similar body on frame SUV).

Wow. Thank goodness your family is okay. What a story. Very nerve racking.

Other person was in a Toyota sedan. All we know is that is was a 4 door and it's silver. 5-0 said his airbags were all blown. I think that they lived really close to the accident. I'm sure that car is fubar'd, although the Officer that talked to us said it didn't look too bad on the outside. Modern cars are good at bending but not breaking.

Hopefully you live in a county that actually prosecutes and doesn't just turn this turd back out into the world.

That being said, I think we need to get away from the mind set that old cars a bastion's of safety. That Volvo might be heavy, but it's not designed for a side impact or any of the other modern crash tests. We need to strike a balance of sending out new drivers in newer safe vehicles that don't break the bank.

Sorry for the rant, but I needed to get it out.

Your rant doesn't help and you aren't sorry or you would not have posted it. The old Volvo did protect his family from serious injury in this case.

Yes, side airbag curtains might have helped avoid the cuts from the glass. But the car did the job as designed.

Did you consider that I might be addressing other posters outside of the OP to make sure safety features are part of the criteria to get our kids on the road?

Totally agree it's too late now for the OP, the Volvo did well. Just something to think about on the next one.

"Incredibly he survived the crash due to him being in a full-sized truck. Unfortunately, ma'am, he did not survive the spontaneous combustion shortly after."

Glad you family lived. Sorry about the car but it looks like it did it's job.

Thanks for sharing your story.

I don't remember saying that this older car was better in any way, shape, or form than newer cars. We drive old Volvos because she and I just love them. I daily an 88 240. She had this 92 740 Turbo Wagon. We just like the cars.

That being said, this was in the neighborhood of a 50mph T-bone right into the A pillar. There was no appreciable intrusion into the passenger compartment. The Volvo did it's job I'd say.

Different angle to show how much or how little the impact damage pushed into the car.

IDK why.

I'm using my real name on this forum already. If everybody put their name up there in the top left there would be a lot less bravado online.

I didn't know that was your real name. Some people use movie character names.

If you enjoy wrenching on them a lot you might be able to buy that cheapo with a salvage title and have a little fun with it. I'd think for a few grand it would be drivable again, and by definition as an older Volvo afficionado you must not care what it looks like.

Glad your loved ones are safe.

Should send the images to Volvo to use on a safety promo and see if they'll give you a rebate on the purchase of a new Volvo

I will be buying it back. It's a factory turbo. That's worth something. Plus we put a lot of new stuff into it over the past year.

This car had over 300k miles on it. It had hit a bear at some point in it's life. She's seen some stuff. Her parts will help keep other Volvos on the road.

The first car we bought our oldest was a white 6 year old 2002 S60. I saw a couple of S60s involved in side impacts at a local indy shop before deciding on a Volvo. It was a mechanical nightmare at times but drove well and the seat comfort was top notch. The best seats of any car I've owned. That car got passed down to the youngest who drove it until it was totaled by a hailstorm. Both kids loved that car. The styling was distinctive but cool.

The indy mechanic we used had free loaners and they were all older Volvo wagons. Absolute tanks and fun to drive.

3 years ago when looking for a car for myself I REALLY wanted a Volvo Wagon Cross Country. Came close to buying a couple of times but didn't work out. Ended up with a 6 year old Lexus 300h.

That's a nice looking 240. It brings back memories. I learned to drive in my parents manual 84' GL. It wasn't sexy but that thing had some power to it and handled well.
