Great looking people hauler but how do you go camping with this? How could you put a bike in it to keep it safe? Where does the dog go? If I buy a gas grill from home depot, how do I get it home?

They made a mini bus, not a suv. Maybe I just don't understand how the rear storage works, but it looks like a deal breaker to me

Family of 4 and wife has a 12 KR Expedition. On family vacations we have stuff stacked pretty good in the back with the third row flat. Have been trying to talk my wife into getting the max on our next one for the extra room. When I saw the exterior pictures of the new yota, it was a lock that this was what we were getting. Now after seeing the 3rd row situation its not even a contender.

If you need to pack that much stuff, why not use the roof rack? We got a roof rack bag for the GX. Makes it very easy. I wouldn't say no way until I see the back area in person.

Hitch racks brah. I have a 2nd gen, mountain bike fits but you have to fold one or both 2nd row seats. Big bike aint fittin on 3rd row even when flat.

Im curious about the 3rd row SLIDING. That's new, may help family haulers.

LOL, it will only haul Lowes gas grilles. It does have that 9,000 pound towing capacity.

Also, the folding not quite flat thing is not surprising for a hybrid in this class. We really are just talking about a 'load floor' being about 6 inches higher than otherwise (with a weird adjustable shelf behind that), and while that matters if being used on stroller/grocery duty by smaller females/vertically challenged folks, it shouldn't be that big a deal for the serious off-road campers/bikers I'd think.

But hey, I'm not spending 70K+ on it while deluding myself it is a masculine do-it-all minivan alternative. It also doesn't include a vacuum sweeper in the back, like the Honda van.

I can't believe you've asked "how do I go camping with this" and "where does the dog go" about a 3 row SUV. In fact I audibly laughed at the dog question.

Lots of laughs in this thread. Not everyone needs to pack 6 kids and an entire house in the back of their SUV. Toyota hit a home run with this.

Pretty sure that is the goal. A people hauler.

If you need to load a grill and take it home, or haul a bike, etc they have things called trucks that do those type of jobs rather well.

Also I am pretty sure if you buy a grill from Lowe's they will even mail it to you. For free

Sorry, this is not a home run. Every competitor has significantly better cargo capacity/convenience due to 3rd rows that fold flat into the floor. The Sequoia looks great inside and out, and should lead in fuel economy when the ratings are finalized, but they swung and missed on cargo capability.

To those that say get a truck, sure there are times when a pickup is better than a full size SUV, and there are times when the SUV is superior. For those that carry people more often, the SUV is the better vehicle, as long as it can handle moderate Home Depot runs.

And roof carriers are a huge pain in the @ss, not to mention the wind noise and decrease in fuel economy. Hitch mounted carriers are easier to use and don't have those drawbacks, but being forced to use a hitch carrier because the Sequoia has compromised internal cargo capacity is a trade off the competition doesn't require.

Not a home run - I'd call it a double. They closed in on the competition, but didn't shoot far enough in front to overtake any of them, except maybe in fuel economy and power, and fell way behind in cargo capability.

Agreed. And as someone that really wanted to love the new Sequoia, I can't help but feel the people overlooking the cargo capacity issue either never have that need, or they are just giant Toyota homers that would have loved this truck regardless of its flaws.

I'm not sure what everybody's cargo expectations were. This will be comparable to the Tahoe/Expedition. Not going against the Suburban or Expy Max. The seats don't fold flat but what are you losing? 3" of space up to the roof?
I"ve got 4 kids and this is right in the wheelhouse of what we are looking for.

But can you fit a dog in it?

I am dreaming about spending an entire weekend visiting dealerships and when looking at every model asking the salesperson "Where does the dog go?"

Looks to be 6 " of height or so but thsts not the point. Its thst the cargo area isn't one flat space. Thst really screws up getting things stowed in a decent manner or in and out or what not. It would be annoying as hell. We use the cargo area on the expy 97% of the times we drive it. It would get old real fast.

I'm guessing I'm not understanding the derision of the dog hauling need for an SUV. That's an extremely common occurrence. My wife's SUV hauls a 120 lb bloodhound and a 15 lb Boston Terrier frequently. We have an SUV partially because we own dogs.

When we drive to the coast, we bring the dogs and we stack the hell out of the back of her SUV. If this weird ass configuration can't meet that need then it's a deal killer.

Looks like 12 inches or more lost based on the thickness of the seat back, the bottom cushion, and the raised platform.

" We really focused on the third-row seats. One of the criticisms we heard is there's not enough storage for luggage when you're using all three rows of seating. We fixed the second-row seat with a tumble feature to have the best ingress and egress in the class. Then we put a slide on the third row. That allows the customer to decide whether they want as much legroom back there, or they can move the seat forward and get four full-size suitcases and still seat three adults back there."

Yeah, that's not going to cut it.

C'mon, it's not the need to carry a dog, or go camping, that is funny it's the question "where does the dog go" that is cracking me up. I bet I could find a picture of a person and a dog riding together in a BMW Isetta.

If you can't find room for a dog, or a way to go camping, in a 3 row SUV then good luck in life. If you say I have 5 kids and 2 dogs and barely fit in my current Sequoia, that seems a bit more legitimate than "where does the dog go?".

It does appear the Sequoia cargo capacity is reduced, but I haven't found stats showing just how much. It's possible they are repositioning the Sequoia and trying to compete in a slightly different segment, but that wouldn't seem wise since there is less competition in the very large SUV class. For anyone who currently owns a Sequoia and finds it barely is big enough for their use cases, this would be a concern.

My SUV was out of commission and I ended up taking my son camping in my sedan a year ago. I love packing to whatever my limit is, I always feel it's fine to have too much rather than not enough - but I'm a notorious over packer and I maximize space. It was my son and I, a large portable refrigerator, a car battery based pack to power the fridge, two propane grills, propane tanks,5 bundles (think the small kind you get at a convenience store) of wood, a tent, two sleeping pads, portable bunk bed, two bicycles, clothes, bedding, various footballs, soccer balls, frisbees, a scooter, a folding table, two folding chairs, charcoal, lighter fluid, pots and pans, and who all knows what else crammed in there. Could have camped for weeks. People tend to buy more vehicle than they need.

Saw some internet rumors that the Lexus GX will get this hybrid power train in a year or two. Anyone know anything? I hope not, just the 385hp V-6 without the battery would be cool though

That's most of the market. These are largely mall crawlers and the moveable platform makes for a nice cargo area for most users.

The people who really need space are going to go for Expedition Max or Suburban, but Toyota was never going to get those buyers.

I'm far from a Toyota homer. I respect their quality, but the Sequoia/Tundra has always been a hard pass for me. If I were buying in this particular segment, they just went from last to first.

You are correct and the people who don't see it are just fan bois and typical Texags.

It is supposed to be a sport utility vehicle. The third row configuration takes utility completely out of it. Sure Home Depot will mail the gas grill. But what if I need the grill today? Or to bring home 6 bags of concrete today? Or big plants? Or freaking camping gear for 4 people? Why would anyone buy a car this big that has the cargo carrying ability of an accord? Unless you have 8 people in your car nearly every day.

This car hauls people and does it well. Heck it probably even tows well. But you can't lock a bike inside, you can't really tote around big dogs, I bet something as simple as snow skis are a real pain in the butt with this third row seat constantly in the way. Or a fishing pole, because I know everyone LOVES having a fishing pole bouncing in their face all day.

Just make the third row easily removable. Its all they needed to do was to make it easily removable. But instead they make a multi tiered shelving system and mega seat. WTF.

Funny thing is I really like sequoias and when I saw this I was interested. But it would be a PITA literally every day just so the 3-5 times a year the third row seat is used the people will be a little more comfy.

Roger350
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think all the people in this thread saying it is a hard pass due to cargo space would disagree with your assertion of who the market is. There are plenty of us that want a full size body on frame SUV for towing and mild off roading to facilitate our outdoor recreation that don't want or need the extended wheel base versions because they are less handy on trails or mall parking lots and hardly fit in a standard garage.

I'm sure this will be a sales leader for MY '23, but they are once again conceding significant market share to the domestics simply because they choose to be less capable in an important metric category with full size truck buyers.
