Cannot go wrong either way. Unusual comparison, though, as others have pointed out. You're either getting a great apple or a great orange, as the saying goes.

I will say that I also had a company car Subaru Legacy and really liked it but it did have several small issues. We are on our second 4Runner and 4th Toyota and none have ever had a single issue.

If you aren't using the 4runner off of pavement, get something else. Other than looking really good, it just isn't a very good SUV, unless you are going to use it what it's really made for. It will last forever, but I was only able to keep mine for a year because I was so uncomfortable in the seat.

We love our GX. It is smallish for an SUV, but I have a truck and also bought a cargo carrier for the rear if we need more room in the GX for trips, etc.

I've done an hour each way trip in the third row of the GX. I'm 6' 200 lbs and was decently comfortable.

As mentioned, the GX depreciates like crazy, so you can buy a used one with low miles for pretty cheap. Very similar to 4Runner, but much nicer and doesn't hold its value near the same. There is a point where similar 4Runners and GXs will cross in value and the GX will be cheaper, even though it is nearly identical and better in almost every way.

Like the 4Runner, the GX is very solid and reliable to 200k+ miles. You can trick them out a bit if you are interested, find the GXOR group on Facebook to see some nice rigs. There is also a GXOR TX group for locals.

Stock 4Runner shocks are crap, I can vouch for the nose dive. I swapped in a set of Bilstein 5100's myself and it improved things a lot. Stock Dunlop tires are garbage too.

Newer Subarus (post 2012) have a redesigned engine that should reduce the risk of head gasket issues. CVTs are a known weak point. But when I was shopping for my wife an Outback + the cost of a new CVT was still less expensive than a similarly appointed 4 Runner.

Made the decision easy knowing even I had to replace the CVT I was still saving money over the 4 Runner. People love them because they're dependable as hell, but there comes a point where the up front price premium stops justifing the savings on maintenance costs in my book.
With the MPG difference you can afford another CVT as well. I'd want an insurance quote for both as well. iihs gives the Outback better safety ratings than the 4Runner.

Subaru dropped the junk Jatco(Nissan) CVTs a few years back(2013?) and now make their own.

OP- Subie people aren't too far behind Wrangler owners for modding. I'd also do the math for 0% on the new versus used as the 2020 Outback is a nice step up from the previous generation. The new global platform is 50% stronger than the previous one. I'd have her drive the 4Runner and Outback back to back.

In my experience it doesn't depreciate as fast as other luxo suvs. T4Rs seems to hold their value well too.

Interesting and timely thread. I've had a 4Runner, a Tundra, 2 land cruisers, an outback and now a LX. Spent lots of time driving my parent's GX as well. Of all these, we owned the 4 runner the least amount of time. I think we kept it for less than 2 years. It was a rough ride and pretty much the same gas mileage as a land cruiser without the space. Also didn't like the top heavy feel. Wife is currently driving a LX and we are trying to sell her old land cruiser. Also trying to sell my 2015 Outback since I don't drive the miles I use to.

I went with an outback for my work car because I was coming out of another car and wanted something in between a SUV and a car. I use to drive 8-10 hours a day a few days a month with several 3-5 drive hour days sprinkled in. I wanted the comfort, power, handling, space, etc that came with the Outback and I went with the 3.5R Limited. It's been a great car but just doesn't fit our needs anymore. Now that most of my miles are in town I'm driving my truck more and the Outback just sits in the garage.

Just FYI:

Would I chose an Outback over a 4Runner? Totally depends on the situation. However, I probably wouldn't buy another 4Runner again. They are great vehicles and people obviously love them, just not right for us. The GX is certainly nicer but still pretty tight on space and I don't like the back door design. If you are patient you can probably find a used Land Cruiser or LX for close to the same price as a GX. I'm biased - we are Land Cruiser/LX fans. Had 2 land cruisers and one LX and they have all been excellent and much more capable and comfortable than the 4Runner.

We've had a lot of interest and still talking to some interested buyers. Kinda at the decision point again - do we put some work into it and keep it as a third vehicle with it still casually up for sale or do we drop the price and let it go as is. Decisions, decisions...

It party depends on how long you intend to keep the vehicle. If you are someone who trades when the mileage hits the 100k range, and you like the Subaru, you should be fine. If you are someone like me who drives it until the wheels fall off, puts the wheels back on and then drives some more, the Toyota will be a better bet IMO. What the other have said about the head gaskets problems on the Subaru seem to be very common. Apparently, they are not using Jatco anymore, so maybe their CVTs are better now, but even if so, the Subaru cvt probably won't hold a candle compared to the Toyota transmission.

Oddly enough, like the OP I am considering the 4Runner and Outback, plus the Jeep Wrangler, for my next vehicle (likely within the next year-18 months).

I love the look and feel of the 4Runner and Toyota's reputation for longevity but I hate the price tag and lack of a manual transmission.

Outback and Jeep are in the mix because of the availability of a manual transmission. They also have enough space for what I need.

What about manual transmission Subarus? Do they hold up well?

I keep vehicles for a long time (200,000 miles plus) and don't want top of the line or tons of bells and whistles. We have kids and raise livestock. I need a functional/practical vehicle that will last.

The few things the 4runner does well just dont apply to Austin. If she wants it because it looks cool then it doesnt matter what any of us say. If you are truly seeking logical reasons to buy a 4runner in Austin, well there arent any.

This one one of those things where the narrative follows long after the issue is resolved.

The models that have the failed head gasket problem are:
  • Impreza (from 1999 to 2011)
  • Forester (from 1999 to 2010)
  • Legacy (from 2000 to 2009)
  • Outback (from 2000 to 2009)
  • Baja (from 2003 to 2006)

Not sure why a 4Runner wouldn't work just fine in Austin. I live in Austin and I see plenty of them. Yeah, its better suited in the mountains or whatever but so is an outback. Both are well represented here. If you're a camper, both are very well suited for running out west to Big Bend or either would work just fine as a grocery getter. I would say the choice for me is more about lifestyle, which better fits your personality, and, honestly, driver's comfort/experience with bigger vehicles. The 4Runner can be a bit of a handful. The Outback with the eyesight package, AWD, etc is incredibly safe and will actually prevent accidents with all those systems. If the driver is accident prone and/or isn't use to driving a top heavy SUV, the subaru is the better choice, IMHO.

OIC. Just don't go back to 2009 cause that's when Outbacks had head gasket issues.

I'd rock an old square body Forester and load it up w/ Sti takeoffs.

Have owned both.

4Runners are outstanding.
Excellent for truck features like travel, towing over the Outback.
Driving around older, more sizable people was more comfortable.

I think our next SUV will be a LC or LX. After the GX my wife is hooked but wants just a tad more size. Plus she loves the look of the LX.

I've owned two 4Runners and an Outback. We bought the Outback for my wife for the first kid transporter. I was impressed with the fit and finish of the Outback when we got it. I felt like we got a lot of bang for the buck with the Subie, but we definitely felt it was underpowered with the 4 cylinder engine. When my sister bought an Outback, she took our advice and got the 3.6L engine and it made a lot of difference in powering the vehicle. We ended up selling our Outback much sooner than I had hoped (third kid meant we needed more room).

I'm on my second 4Runner now and it just works for me. Reliability is well known and I enjoy the ride, ruggedness and also the finish out of the newest model. I've started modding this one more than I did my first. I can attest to the notable nose dive in the current model, but I also switched out to Bilstein shocks (5160/6112 combo) and that has helped a ton while also improving the overall stance when I leveled the front.

I'd recommend both cars depending on what you want to do with them. The Outback is a smoother ride (more car like, while also having more clearance), but the 4Runner is a bit more fun in my book.

Really considering this. Going to look at it this week...thoughts for the Subaru peeps? Kind of gives us the TRD feel. Wife is all about it.

2018 Limited Outback with some add ons at the Subaru dealership. Little higher mileage @55k, but not terrible. Price makes up for the mileage. Any idea how the lift and BFG's effect the mileage/drive/maintenance?

I want to take this to 400K. If there is a cult, sign me up.
