Lexus GX - Any Thoughts?

I'm considering giving my 2013 Tundra to my almost 17 year old son (he learned to drive in it) and getting myself a new ride. I really like the styling and size of the Lexus GX. Looking at used, 2016 - 2018, likely around 30k miles. Does anyone own one or know of any issues to be aware of? Any thoughts? Anything else I should be looking at? My focus so far has been on the GX and 4Runner. I'd like a 3rd row for when I need the extra seats a handful of times per year, but it will be folded down most of the time.

We've always been a Toyota family, so would prefer Toyota or Lexus, but might be open to other options. Reliability is #1 for me. Bells and whistles, which I know Toyota is very far behind on compared to others, aren't important.

Over the last 20 years, we've owned Corolla, Tundra (2), 4Runner, Highlander and driven each to well over 130k trouble free miles. We've also briefly owned a Volvo S60 (felt cheap for a "luxury" car) and Nissan Frontier (minor annoying issues)

Wife has a 2018. All wheel drive is good, V8 has plenty of power for grocery getting and kid haulin. the back seat is tight for anyone over 4' tall. Interior will be less equipped than the other luxury suv/crossovers (X5, Q7, etc) but you are used to that I assume since you have been a toyota driver for an extended time. on the plus side it is an actual suv not a crossover and they look great with a small lift and all terrains and some overlanding mods

Most of the women I know that have them are pleased.

Most of the men with Land Cruisers think they are awesome.

I would love a Land Cruiser, but they are just too damn expensive. Very expensive new and still around $40k with 100k+ miles. They do last forever, though, and retain their value.

The GX that I owned was amazing at pulling boats. I know that it is not their marketing focus, but they were surprising good outside soft seats and creature comforts. There is an old article in The Telegraph describing their snow capabilities, but I don't want to find the link.

Another Toyota family here. I have a 4Runner at the moment. My next car is going to be another 4Runner or the GX. My understanding, and some LC pro on here correct me if I am wrong, is that the GX is branded as the LC Prado in other markets.

I actually found these this morning:

We test drove the gx460 last week.
We like the exterior, but oh my is the interior 5 years behind. Hate to spend that kind of $ and have such a dated interior. Not sure what we are going to do at this point.

Like mine. Super comfortable to drive and great on road trips.

Have been some issues with air suspension on these models.

Tech is dated but don't care. Bluetooth works so I'm good.

Had a 2011 Tahoe LTZ and replace w/ a 460 luxury a couple weeks ago. 2016 w/ only 15k miles. I blacked out the chrome, leveled the front 1.5", and put on new wheels/tires. My goal was to get the look further away from soccer mom and more aggressive. It will be my commuter ride. I'm a big fan so far. ,

The GX is a Land Cruiser Prado and will also last forever.

Thats badass and pretty much what I'd do as well. Maybe add a roof rack cause I have 3 kids and need a roof box on road trips.

Really nice! Who did the work on it?

Kid 2 arrives in April, and the wife says there's not enough room in the Santa Fe for two car seats.

If it's going to just be used to haul kids around town, is there any advantage to going with a used GX vs a comparably priced Telluride/Palisade?
The story isn't that [DeSantis] "couldn't win" the primary. The story is that an overwhelming majority of our population is heinously stupid. 50% of them vote for communists. 75% of the remaining 50% vote for Trump, who cant win. When the majority of the opposition party insists on voting for an opposition candidate who can't win, you get exactly the government you deserve. - Well Endowed Ag

Drivenmotor out of Lewisville. I wasn't in a rush, they sourced the vehicle and did all the work.

Have you considered a 2 or 3 year old Sequoia? A little bigger but cheaper and likely tough enough.

Moving toward that as my next vehicle. The TRDs are hard to find used, though.

My wife has had a 2018 GX for a year. We like it quite a bit. She was in an Expedition so the GX is smaller but after having it for a while we both prefer the GX size. It appears solidly built. The tech is old but functional. The second row works fine for our two kids (6 and 4).

The only change I would make is for more power in the motor as it can feel a bit sluggish compared to new vehicles. It weighs more than my F150 but the motor is noticeably less powerful.

Owned an '08 for 4 years and loved it!
moved from a Corolla to GX.
Test drove a 2019 GX & LX today and was stunned at how far behind the tech is on the vehicle.
we would be moving from a 2013 Navigator and found the ride on the GX to be less than satisfactory.

The interior is definitely outdated. Its updated for the 2020 models, but I haven't driven one yet.

Has anyone driven or own a Mercedes GLS? Seems like a similar size to the Lexus GX. Seems like pretty similar pricing too. Can get into a 2017 with 30k-40k miles for $40k or so

I'll likely be retiring my 2010 ML350 in the next year or two, and am curious about this as an option (as well as the GX and others that folks have mentioned)

Blue Goose, I have owned both.

a 2017 GLS is an excellent alternative.

Your have to be careful about checking to make sure a Mercedes has the options you want. MB does not equip a lot of their vehicles with all the options to keep prices more competitive. For example, I was recently shopping for a used 2016 GLE and noticed that a lot of them don't have parking/proximity sensors. I would have thought it would be a standard feature, but it isn't.

The '20 is not updated. May have a higher resolution screen, but otherwise basically identical since 2011.

GX's are very capable trucks, and retain the comfort you'd expect in a Lexus.

Bought a certified 2015 this summer, we love it. Just drove from Houston to Athens, GA to Charleston to New Orleans to Houston with 4 adults. Very comfy on long trips, which is why we wanted it. Could be a little larger, but overall we liked it over other options like Pilot, 4Runner, Highlander, QX60, QX80, MDX, and Yukon.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. For those mentioning the Sequoia, I'm not a fan of the current styling and it looks/feels bigger than what I'm looking for.

I've also always like the styling of the Audi Q7. What are the Auto Boards thoughts on Audi? I don't see much discussion on here regarding Audi. Reliable?

When we went around test driving we stopped at my buddies Audi dealership. He said to stay away from the Q7 unless it's CPO. After getting in and checking one out, I was tempted to not take his advice.

Exactly. I love the way my '13 Tundra looks, but for some reason I hate the way the Sequoia looks, which is essentially a Tundra with a camper.
