Ok, here's a full day's work.

I started the day with 2 doors and the trunk lid with the first coat of blocking primer. Primer was sprayed late yesterday and cured overnight.

Door block sanded after first primer coat:


Trunk lid ditto;


Door with second primer coat at the end of the day after block sanding, filler application to fix imperfections, blocking the body filler, spraying with guide coat and sanding again.


Ditto for this panel.


The trunk lid has some crazy contours and took more patience than I normally have.

Skipping dinner and going straight to the Crown!!

Just wait untill you are finished. I am sure centerpole can agree, there is nothing like driving around town, getting asked about it and saying "I built it" and then busting out your phone to show them that you mean that YOU took 10,000 pieces of metal, plastic and rubber and made a car out of them. You didn't bolt on some aftermarket parts, you didn't have a shop do it. You ****ing BUILT it.

Reinforced by the fact that, IMHO, the 1970 chevelle body is the best of the muscle car era.
I'll get there, if the $$$ and patience hold out.

So much this! I love it when people ask "who did your work?". My standard reply is "I did mutha f..", no, not really - it is a pleasure to say "I did" or in our case "we did" and we didn't even do one lick of body work. Which seems crazy, now that we, like stabs, have turned every single nut and bolt. Doing this sort of restoration would take me yeeeerrrzzzz.

As it is I'm already invested in this project hitting the like button on all these pictures.

I knew things were going too smoothly. Today was one of those that make you ask yourself Why da Hell did I start this!!!??

Patch panels: NEVER trust em.

Last rust repair was the fenders. All A bodies rust out behind the front wheels; mine did too.

No prob, get patch panels, cut out the bad stuff, weld in the new.

Anyone who's been around this stuff had heard horror stories about poorly stamped patch panels. My story confirms the horror.



After welding in the panel everything looked great; until we tried to fit the fender to the inner fender then the body.

Huge inexplicable gap. After checking everything we saw that the patch panel was 1/2 inch narrower at the bottom than the original fender.

More panels from another supplier will be here manana.

Probably 3 days lost to a crappy patch panel.

Ok, so what is it?
Wrapped in protective plastic it's the freshly machined and assembled big block 396 which will eventually live under the hood of my Chevelle.

Engine highpoints:
Bored .060 (block was .030 over when I found it)
Roller cam
Forged pistons
Competition 3 angle valve job
Ported heads
Balanced and trued
High volume oil pump
Fuel Injection.

Ok, it won't have a big honkin 750 carb but I opted for the dependability of FI. The big block air cleaner sits perfectly on the FI so it looks original

For the guys who suggested going back stock Malibu; this car will look SS. Stripes, cowl induction hood, badging.

However, paying homage to the original Malibu, I'm thinking about keeping the bench seats and backing the 396 with a Muncie 4 speed.

Bench seats and floor shift 4 speed was an SS option in 70. Actually, bench seats and column shift auto was also an option.

Guy doing the metal work on my car has a 70 SS 454 which was originally a 454 column shift auto with bench seats. Lady who bought it new in Killeen wanted a big motor to pull her boat but didn't want it to look like a hot rod. Not bucket seats and no stripes.

An SS 454 pulling a boat. Hmmm.

Opinions welcome on my idea about bench seats and 4 speed.

FAST was recommended by the owner of the performance machine shop I used for the engine work. He showed me several high dollar muscle cars he'd converted from carb to FAST FI.
Owners were happy with it.
FI is a major plus over carb for cars that are occasional drivers, as this one will be.

Fender ready for primer



Primed



Trunk repair complete; welds ground and smoothed with filler. It will get a coat of bed liner, lightly textured, then splatter paint.



New cowl induction hood scuffed and prepped for primer



Made the Conroe swap meet and picked up some stuff; samples below:





After much thought and cost comparison, decided to go with a 700r4 auto transmission. Picked up a rebuildable one in Conroe. Cost of a 4 speed conversion was way high so I dropped that idea.

The TH400 was GM's factory ****** for big blocks but has no overdrive. The 700 is lighter duty than the 400 but has overdrive.

I found a semi-retired transmission guy who's built 700s for big block application. This car will be a Sunday afternoon cruiser, never punched very hard. The beefed up 700 should be fine.

Next: Get the engine, ******, exhaust, fuel tank, brakes and lines set on the frame.

Then body back on the frame and start fitting doors, fenders, hood and trunk lid.

Note: * * * * * * = t r a n n y. Guess texags is sensitive to sexual identity .

Great progress so far! I would recommend getting an EZ-TV cable setup from Bowtie Overdrives....will make setting up the 700r4 a breeze!

Timely advice! I've been researching that issue. I know that adjustment of the TV cable is critical and a bad adjustment can burn up the 700 in just a matter of a few miles.

Not my car but if things go well mine will look a lot like this one. Same color combo. Fathom blue exterior paint with Pearl White interior; both options in 70 SS.

Differences, mine will have split bench and column shift auto trans. To the SS purists and bucket seat fans, this is homage to the original Malibu my wife and I drove away from our wedding in over 48 years ago.

It really is easy! Change a spring, bolt on the cam to the carb, hook up the cable, push the adjuster button, roll the throttle to wide open, release button....done!

EDIT: they have mounts for the FI too! Just give them a call.

Top of floor pan and trunk coated with bedliner.

Coated underside of trunk pan as well.

No more rust on this baby!!

And some good sound deadening as well.

Now, back to Chevelle issues:

CHECK REAR END GEAR RATIO FIRST!!!!

I intended to use the original 10 bolt rear end that came with the Chevelle.

Also decided to go with the 700r4 transmission which has overdrive. Wanted overdrive for cruising economy. Found a rebuildable core and had it rebuilt with strong guts. About $1500 in the ******.

THEN I pull the plate on the rear end just to clean it and check for obvious problems. It was fine.

BUT, I counted teeth on the ring and pinion and discovered that it's a 2.56 rear end.

NOT good.

A very high geared "highway" rear end behind a 700r4 and I'll be coming off the line like a 4 cylinder Vega. Now, this car won't ever be raced or even driven hard but I'd be cruising 75 mph turning maybe 1500 rpms and have no punch left. Great for economy but hard on the ******.

Gotta research this one but I'll prolly be looking for a 12 bolt, lower geared rear end.

Oh well, it's only $$$$

True. About $850 for parts will regear it. Plus labor. Don't trust myself with a rear end rebuild.

You're right. The $850 estimate was from Moser Engineering, a performance outfit in Indiana.

Another complication: My 10 bolt is the 8.2 version which won't take a ring gear any lower than 3.08 without changing the carrier also. The estimate from Moser may have included the carrier.

I have a line on a 12 bolt axle from a Chevelle here locally. Will know soon if I have a deal. Not sure yet of the ratio but any 12 bolt rear end ratio should be ok with the 700r4.

Operative words, "should be". I'll research that further.

For a Motive 3.73, Eaton Posi, & Motive install kit, I'm seeing $785 from Summit.

I setup my GM 8.5 with a Ratech pinion depth setting tool, dial indicator, and a solid pinion spacer. If you think you may mess with another axle in the future, give it a shot...also a decent wow factor from others when you say that you set it up yourself.

It was time consuming since it was my first axle, but I'm sure I could knock one out in a weekend or quicker now.

Presuming the 8.2 will hold up, I'd take a fresh rebuild over a 12 bolt.

Silver, I'm impressed!!

I'm picking up the chevelle 12 bolt tomorrow; 400 bucks. Will check it our and verify the ratio. Being a 12 bolt it will surely be lower than the 2.56 in the 10 bolt I have. Hopefully it'll run in the current condition without repair.
