Update, all quiet over the last month. I've installed an OEM coolant cap, replaced the brake/clutch fluid, oil change and filter. Urgently to do is: condition the front leather seats and replace remaining driveline fluids (along with the haldex filter). Coming up on one year of ownership this Sunday.

spent some cash money on a custom bezel pod, boost gauge almost looks oem

Family road trip to Galveston without a hitch (wife needs a bigger car ASAP!). Also 2 kids require more than double the stuff that one kid does...

and got a pic of the car all washed up.

Well, yesterday marks a year since I bought the LOLvo which means it's time to face the financials...

$2971.40 is the amount spent over the past year on repairs and tools to perform repairs,
of that $718.27 was paid to my Indy for urgent repairs/maintenance ($350 for a vacuum leak, $250 for a pair of busted rad hoses, $90 for an alignment, $45 for a block test)
also, $1,650 (!!) of the total was to DIY the adaptive struts on all 4 corners, including some tools I didn't have, all new mounts and hardware, and an alignment
= repairs come out to $247/month
= repairs come out to $110/month other than the struts, the struts are seen as the most significant repair that people will experience when buying these cars at their current ages.

$216.30 was spent on Ubers and rental cars

$0 was spent on tows (thanks AAA!)

I've spent a considerable amount on mods but I won't get into that here as that's discretionary. I will say that modding these niche cars is insanely expensive compared to the WRX world I came from. 3x - 4x the cost generally for equivalent parts.

Finally, I've spent some money on maintenance and tires but won't get into that here either as that's a cost regardless of the car I drive.

So, are you satisfied/happy with where you're at now? Would you do it again, or choose something else?

I've enjoyed following along at home...(and thankful my BMW has been a bargain so far!)

I think knowing the actual total ( go fast bits, regular maintenance, and emergencies) would be great!

On the other hand I understand if you don't want to know.

I think I'd do it again. The car is well-sorted and the first owner took great care of it along the way.

Oh I know all the numbers, I keep a close eye on my finances in general so I'm very aware of what I've spent.

For go-fast bits (exhaust incl. install, tune, boost gauge with custom pod) I'm in it for about $1,070 so far with another $600 in the next couple of months for an intercooler (stock one will heat soak with one pull, no I'm not kidding, designed for Norway not Texas).

For cosmetics/aesthetics I'm in it for about the same (license plate relocate, tint, third row, roof rails and load bars, mud flaps, full clay bar and wax), edited to add an upgraded headunit for $250 ~$1,280

Tires were $550
Second key programmed was $350

That covers 99% of the costs, might be missing a few minor things

I can't believe that I forgot to mention this! A somewhat famous YouTuber bought a manual V70R around the same time I bought mine. He runs the channel called Shifting Lanes. As a result of the attention/views he's getting as he's building his up to a 400 whp racewagon, since these cars are so few and far between, the value of the Volvo has actually increased by about $2,500! Paid $9,500, worth around $12k on account of the miles, manual, and the Atacama interior. I'll take it!

Must be a thing with these as I've been watching this thread and have passed a white one on my way to work on I-10 and Taylor a few times in the past 2 weeks, and it has a lot of stickers on it as well. It also has the uterus on the back, so I'm sure the guy's boyfriend bought it for him.

Independence Day update. Things are going quite swimmingly and I'm pleased that it's been a quiet 3 months since the radiator hose popped.

I dropped my fuel cap during a fill-up and of course it broke so I have an evap code. New cap on the way.

Had a UOA done and everything checked out great. This car loves Rotella

Also big news, got an intercooler upgrade from do88 (a small Swedish outfit specializing in Volvo and Saab performance parts). 60% more volume in a drop in design, will totally eliminate stock heat soak issues and avoid detonation. I'm also having the radiator replaced at the same time to be safe as there's zero additional labor to do so. A local Volvo enthusiast is doing the work as I've got close to zero time these days.

For Father's Day I got a custom plate and am really happy with how it came out.

Natural habitat...

Overall enjoying the car and the sweat equity that's been put into it. Well sorted and needs nothing right now.

Nice

We're still trying to sell our '92 but not having much luck. Someone from Colorado was interested but didn't realize they were reading listings from halfway across North America. Once my parents figure out if they're keeping my brother's 07 TSX around I'll know whether I'm getting that or buying something new. If I get something new it goes with trade, otherwise I get the TSX we'll trade the Volvo and my wife's VW in for something new for her.

She has an early '10 VW CC and it's getting early '80s GM problems like falling headliner.

No to the Houston group, I'm in Charleston,SC and can't imagine someone would want to travel 1,000 miles for a 960 no matter how nice it looks.

I have done several Volvo forums as well as a 960/V90 group on Facebook + Facebook Marketplace too. I'll have to hit up Volvospeed today though. Thanks for the recommendation!

Well, luck appears to have run out, I'm getting a loose fuel cap alert and a CEL. Replaced the cap but that didn't fix it, it seems like the leak detection pump is going out or I have a small EVAP leak somewhere.

Also my car is currently overboosting above the factory 16psi, need to figure out the issue, not sure if it's a split vacuum hose or something else.

In other news I had a local guy install the intercooler and radiator and clean the throttle body over the weekend so hopefully no more cooling system troubles, the only original components is the overfill reservoir and the thermostat. He did a great job.

Big bombshell here: my tuner has had some issues tuning the car and it's suffered from hard hot starts that I thought was a failing throttle body as well as the occasional complete loss of power, this has now all been chased out over the last few months and it turns out it's an engine timing issue and the exhaust cam pulley is off by a tooth, insane considering I have documentation that the timing belt was done on the vehicle last year at a very reputable Volvo indy in Austin (I also confirmed this via phone call to the shop when I bought the car). The valve actuators can account for this mis-timing (up to 6* adaption) but the issue would be manifested at each hot start (cold starts were never an issue) prior to adaption as well as when the car goes into open loop. I'm amazed that the car hasn't thrown any codes for any of this but this looks to be the last issue that I'm facing. Pic below shows exhaust valve adaption at the end of my commute, roughly one tooth.

The intercooler upgrade is functioning well and does a great job of keeping IATs down

The leak detection issue is intermittent and based on some research is a failing evap pump which is triggering an alert of some kind.

I managed to hit a record 26psi of boost two weeks ago when my TCV stuck closed and failed to actuate the wastegate. That was fun... swapped TCVs and back to normal.

Took a Tine shot and some others:

I, too, once had a Lolvo. It was gifted to my wife by her family because Lolvo's have a good reputation for safety. The problem was that it was a Lolvo and completely unreliable. I also question the safety reputation as one of the problems was a leaky fuel rail that I had to braze shut...

Minor update, the car is finally running decently now that the temps have cooled off. This car really shined when the cold front came through last weekend and was a riot to throw around some corners during that time.

The maintenance needs continue to stack up, working with the local moonlighting mechanic that put in the intercooler to help me out with a few things. The current list includes that he'll tackle this weekend includes:
-Exhaust valve timing currently off by 6* and the camshaft adapters adapt for this every time the car starts, he'll be redoing timing on the car to get it as close to nominal as possible, hopefully this solves the knock issue I was experiencing
-New water pump
-New accessory belt
-Drivetrain fluids: rear diff, angle gear (transfer case), transmission, Haldex fluid and filter (the last one requiring a driveshaft removal)
-rear engine pad mount that I couldn't change myself
-diagnose location of a small leak that I have weeping from the trans/angle gear area
-inner and outer tie rod replacement to fix a minor vibration at 50mph

The list that I need to tackle includes:
-front sway bar end links
-four corner brake job
-upholstery shop to fix stitching on driver seat
-R&R front bumper sag
-fix broken fog light connector
-source a company to refinish wheels and calipers as both are in need of fresh paint

The list of maintenance done recently includes:
-oil change and tires
-diagnosed and fixed a pesky evap leak
-replaced 4 of 5 engine mounts

The car as she sits now

My favorite feature, bar none

Motor mount was DONE

Trans output shaft leak I think

No. They botched timing, I'm done with them. Cheaper to pay $250 to fix it locally.

Pic heavy update. James, the weekend mechanic, spent about 12 hours over the weekend working on the lolvo. He didn't get to everything I needed done (still need to drain and fill: trans, transfer case up front, rear diff) but he hit the important parts and I'm good to go for the time being.

All in probably $900 or so in parts and labor $300 parts/$600 labor. AWD seems to hook better at launch and the car sails straight and smooth, love it. Just about have here where I want her whereby I can start fixing new problems as they come up rather than chip away at preventive stuff!

New and old water pump, old one was original at 166k, glad it was done

Old and new engine pad, I couldn't get it out for the life of me, took him 20 minutes...

Haldex (50/50 on demand torque split via a pump and clutch system) service, since it's a manual it has a harmonic balancer that has to be removed to gain access to the filter window. This requires dropping both the exhaust and the driveshaft and using a puller to remove the rear balancer, all of which was out of my wheelhouse for a weekend job. The oil when left unchanged can clog the filter with clutch particulates, cavitate the pump and fry the computer module or pump that powers the AWD system turning a $50 parts job to a $700 parts only job

The filter fits into the bottom hole, pump slots into the left cavity

Gross...

Timing job, did the rear camshaft seals while he was in there as he had a pair laying around and they were starting to seep, timing was half a tooth off

Camshaft adaptation sweeps/checks, perfect:

Adaptions are spot on, no more 6.8* of exhaust adaption!!

Tie rods were done, outer ties were totally blown, smooth as butter now

love me a good healthy suspension shot

AWD boi

Hit 166k on the way to work

Honestly the only thing stopping me is having a backup car to drive while I chip away at it. The risk of me screwing something up and being car-down for the start of the week is what scares me away. That and having two little kiddos I'd rather enjoy the cool weather with.

Oh I'm well aware, I tip him well, I bring cookies when I pick up the car, and I let him know how much I appreciate it. The best part is that he's knowledgeable, thorough and passionate (he messages me those pictures as he works, it's fun to see how quickly he can move through things, solve problems, etc.). It's a two-fold benefit in that: 1. I bring my own parts, high-quality FCP Euro parts that aren't Volvo-brand super-expensive but are OE and 2. I save on labor. What he did this weekend was easily $2.5-3k at a Dealer or independent. He's keeping that car on the road!
