I would even take a four door Jeep 392 Rubicon with the 6.4L V8 over the LX 700.

LOL, I'll tread however I feel like treading. That is a good clip though. Have you test droven one of the 392's? All of the new Toyota's are becoming maintenance headaches, and seem to be on the course to be throw away vehicles in 5 to 10 years. Toyota's quality has gone way down with the new turbo 4 bangers, nanny assists, batteries, etc..

For the record, I have a 2021 LC. I expect it will last another 30 to 40 years, or until my life's end. I couldn't say the same for the new Lexus and Toyotas. I think most people will be lucky to get 10 years out of them, and with probably a lot of return trips to the dealer with this electronic gadget and then another electronic gadget, and likely turbo issues, battery issues, etc. taking up a good part of owning it.
I'm just being funny on a Land Cruiser thread, I support your choice and who doesn't like a raucous V-8. My cousin swapped a V8 into a new Rubicon before Jeep was offering the V8 option, he did it himself and sold it for a profit a couple years later. The Jeeps come with a lot of features and are perhaps the most customizable vehicle on the road, so fun to own.

I would say that personally that I still wouldn't bet on a Jeep vehicle over a Toyota or Lexus, when it comes to longevity and repair costs. I understand the concerns with the complexity they've introduced with both a hybrid system and turbos, vs a naturally aspirated V8, but they could still do it well and there is a lot more to repairs and maintenance than just the engine. We will see. I've had a 240K mile 80 series, a 230K mile 100 series, and now a 200K mile Gen 2 Sequoia. I hope these new 4 and 6 cylinders, with or without hybrids and turbos, from Toyota and Lexus have the same longevity. I think I read the Tundras/Sequoias were having some serious issue but I hope it get's worked out. If not, no problem going with a V8 Jeep for fun.

my dad added a really nice rack/lights/tent setup to his heritage last week. my kids were impressed. the tent especially is really cool, sleeps 3 adults and its actually comfortable with built in lights and dehumidifier.

i almost spit my drink out when he told me the price tag for the whole setup, but he and my son already have a trip planned this weekend so i think he's going to get his money's worth.

What's the brand on that tent? That looks fun with the dehumidifier

that eats into the cargo capacity so much. it's even worse than the 4runner with 3rd row seats. my brother has a 4runner without the 3rd row and i was shocked how much vertical space we actually lost in comparison.

Overtrail only confirmed for the 700h. The hybrid 3rd row setup wouldn't bother me at all.

What do we know about buying an 80 series?

My Tacoma has been great, but I'll have to fit two car seats in the rear come February, and that's not a lot of room.

Buddy of mine made me an offer to buy his 1995 80 and I'm tempted to make it a trail rig, sell the Tacoma, and get a F250 DD.

There are two reasons for buying an FJ80. One is two make it a trail / overlander and the other is a daily driver because the 80 is the last true badass 4wd.

Things that you have to consider:

1. Where did it live most of its life. Run away from a rig that spent more than two years in the rust-belt, especially early in life. Anything from Missouri and up is a no-go. If you wouldn't buy BBQ there, don't buy a Land Cruiser there.

1A. Don't buy the sizzle, buy the steak. Don't be fooled by someone who put $4k in ARB front and rear bumpers, 35" tires on a 2.5" lift, etc. buy the cleanest, lowest mileage southern vehicle for $10-$15k and then do what you want. I spent $14k for my truck and closing in on $30k in restoration, but I'm doing exactly what I want to make it a daily driver as close to brand new as possible. It will replace my 23 Platinum Tundra. I'll give that to my son to drive, because there is not a vehicle out there made in the last 5 years that I really find fun to own. They all suck ass.

2. Triple lock (3X) vs Center lock only. If you want to make it a trail rig, having the 3X is likely a must since you can lock either the front, rear or both differentials. My 97 LC is center only but it will be a daily driver and will only see jobsites. Triple locked came on less than 25% of the vehicles out there. You'll pay a premium. Look for a 96-97 Lexus LX450. They were usually 3X, but be prepared to be asked if you wear pink panties.

3. Two most common $$$ repairs once you get over 150k miles is replacing the front knuckles / birfield joints. Expect to pay $2K or DIY and spend $1500 in paper towels wiping grease up. The other is a blown head gasket. Mine was replaced at 168k by the previous owner so I can't tell you the cost, but I'm sure it's more than $1000. The rest of the stuff you can do by watching YT or going to ih8mud.com. That's the Texags of Land Cruiser owners

3a. There are two engines in the 80 series. After 1995, I believe they went with the 1FZ-FE 4.5L. It has about 212HP. This is the preferred engine over the original. Putting a Chevy LS engine in is a mortal sin. Don't be that guy. Adding a turbo or SC is the better idea if you really want to go faster than 78mph. Just know 80s love gasoline. They get 11-13mpg.

4. Spend many hours on ih8mud.com. It's known as simply as Mud once you've spent enough time there.

5. Don't be afraid of 200k miles. That's just breaking it in.

6. Things that are know issues to look for: Has the gas tank been replaced? Does it hiss when you open gas tank? (Bad charcoal canister). Is the Green D light burnt out on the cluster? Do you have a CEL/P0401 code? Emission issues are common and a lot of people are deleting the entire system. Do the door locks work. Is the factory Audiovox alarm still installed. It has an engine immobilizer that will lock you out at the most inopportune time, are the seats trashed. Trashed seats are easier to recover than a trashed dashboard, has it been lifted? You will want to do caster correction, but don't let them sell you on correction bushings ($). That's a joke. Either plates ($$) or new radius arms ($$$). Don't run anything larger than 33" tires. The mpg already sucks, don't make it worse.

7. Main point to remember. This is the quintessential Land Cruiser. The last straight-axle, body on boxed frame, made in Japan with parts designed to last 30 years and 500k miles. It's a ****ing beast and makes women want to have lots of sex with you. Plus they are fun as hell to tinker with to make it your own and drive around giving the knowing-nod to those who know what you know. You are better than them and they have a ****ty ride.

Adding to Fido's list

If the steering feels really lose (too much play) you may need the gearbox rebuilt, and that's expensive (in the thousands)

Oil pumps can fail, also very expensive.

Head Gasket job is $3-4k

Needing a paint job, $7-10k easy

New leather kit $1200 plus installation

they are not cheap to restore, find one that already is.

Zero rust underneath is a must, also check tailgate area near window, and up under the rear hatch for rust, then check the roof rack holes for rust. Make sure it was not undercoated to cover up rust, a lot of northern "rust free" rigs are coated with undercoating.

First glimpse out of the paint booth. Just ordered all new drip rail and louvered vent trim from Japan. Might as well make everything new and bright. Wheels go to be powder coated and remachined today.

That sucks. I feel like mine has been there way too long, but what started out as some PDR and paint correction turned in to pull the whole thing apart, body work every ding & dent and make sure all lines and gaps are perfect. All new rubber, trim and emblems. I've been fortunate, I get 2-3 photos a week on progress.

Awesome replies so far - I really appreciate the feedback.

Something I should have added to my initial post - this will be a trail/overland rig. My 2014 Tacoma is pretty well built - 35's, dual lockers, long travel front and rear, etc etc. I've done about as much to it as I can before it needs a trailer or beefier axles.

Because it's a trail vehicle, the LC paint doesn't have to be perfect (though on this particular truck it's pretty decent), and I likely won't be restoring the outside. It has a few dents I'll probably have pulled out as much as reasonable but... asi son los cosas.

I haven't seen the frame, but I have to assume they're as susceptible to rust/rot as the Tacoma frames I'm familiar with and that will be a high priority item before purchase.

Not sure about the gas tank or emissions.
CEL turns on when you turn the key but otherwise goes away, so doesn't seem to have codes and isn't disconnected.
Truck does already have a small lift on it, but I'd plan for it to need maintenance.
35's are a must, 37's are better... but I know it'll feel gutless with that.

Apparently there is a well regarded Land Cruiser guy down the street from my house - AJ's Yotas.

Has anyone heard of this guy?

I'm debating on making my go to mechanic for my 5.7L Tundra and was hoping you LC guys could give some feedback.

And also, how well do rear facing car seats work in an 80?

They barely fit in the Tacoma and it's miserable for the front passenger.

I imagine they won't work very well as there's not much leg room in the rear seats of the 80 and people of even moderate height like the driver's seat adjusted full rearward in the 80.

I take my 2000 LC to AJ and have nothing but amazing experience. He's an awesome dude and does great work. Had a central Texas LC group coffee and hung out at his shop last month.

I trust AJ with my LC for anything. Tell him Matt in the 100series from San Marcos sent you!

I have been looking for Fj60-fj80 series for a year or so. I owned a gx460 and loved it. Where is everyone finding clean cruisers for under 20k? seems like anything in the 10-15k range is either rusted, been wheeled, or needs a complete engine rebuild.

I look on BAT, cars and bids, Facebook market place, MUD.

Trade offs. I chose southern owned over 3X and strong maintenance record over aftermarket parts.

And I hate snorkels. Those were deal-killers

I drove to Waco, Austin and Hot Springs chasing 80s and then one popped-up in FB about an hour from my house. Be patient and go look at several and you'll get a sense of value quickly.
