Placed an order for the 2017 F250 gasser, currently have the 3.73 gears on order. Internet chatter suggests gettkng the 4.30s instead (other factory gearing option), that it "wakes up" the 6.2 and puts some extra TQ to the tires.

Anyone own a 6.2 F250 and have an opinion on gearing selection?

Tires will be 275/65/20. Apparently the mpg numbers are run off stock 31s...maybe another reason to not "fear the gear". Thoughts?

4.30s are unnecesarry IMO esp with the 6R140 transmission.

4.30s would definitely put more torque to the pavement, but do you need it?

There are two overdrives in that transmission, so it may be comparable to the 4.11 with the old single overdrive. I like the 4.11 in my F250. Puts me just over 2,000 RPM at 65 mph.

Also remember that lower gearing (higher number) is sometimes weaker. In the Expedition, for example, the lower gearing that is available actually lowers overall towing capacity.

That doesn't make sense. I could see it being the same in some cases, but lower?

I have a 14 f250 crew cab 4x4 gasser 3:73 gears

Get 11.4 mpg with stock tires

I have pulled a 50 hp Kubota on a heavy frame trailer several times with no issue

I've got about 75,000 miles on a '15 F250 4wd with 3.73's, I don't really think you'd need any more power for 99% of what you do with the truck. I've pulled 16k, loaded 3,500 in the bed, not at the same time, and it has done both with no issues. If you're passing somebody, floor it about 4 seconds before you pull out to pass, you'll hit 90 easily before you get back in your lane. I get 12 mpg average on 285/75-18 Toyo RT's, a great tire for the truck that has worn well. The truck is rough as hell, but it serves it's purpose.

All in all its been a good truck, fit and finish are my only issues, I guess I expect more out of a 48k sticker truck, but it's a company lease so I won't complain.

The doors rattle quite a bit, as well as the skid plates or something underneath. The rear window leaked, the tailgate latch is on it's way out, the clock loses 3-4 minutes every month (?), and the rod in the hinge for the center console slides out constantly. It's a work truck and is definitely used as such, but I would expect a little less wear after 75k. Other than the doors, all the other issues are just annoyances, it's a good truck and I would get another if needed, or drive this one for another 75k no problem. Fortunately I'm getting a 1/2 ton in a few months, the smoother ride will be welcomed.

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know how the '17s stack up.

I would never consider putting a gas motor in a super duty. I always thought it would be a fat pig. But you guys are saying that's not true?

Not a pig. Driven a few 6.2s. Great engine and moves the SD along quite nicely.

Yep.

Even the 5.4L is plenty capable

More power than the 7.3 ever had. Quieter, smoother than the old diesels probably the better choice for most people unless you tow a lot. That being said I have the diesel.

I drove 2 6.7's about 120,000 miles total, and really don't feel like I lack much with the 6.2 I have now. No, the seat of the pants acceleration is nowhere near the same, but realistically the 6.2 is enough engine for the majority of Superduty drivers out there. It will pull anything within reason, or unreasonable, and you never feel like you're overworking the truck. I really think they're the best kept secret in SD trucks, I'll never buy a diesel again personally.

When mine showed up at the local lot, the salesman said had 3 offers for it in the 8 hours it was there. He said they could sell them every day with the gas engine, but the dealers don't like to order them in the nicer trim.

I've always thought putting a gasser in a SD was like putting a v6 in a Mustang.

Maybe I'm wrong.. Wouldn't be the first time.

You should try the 4cyl Mustang.

You'll be impressed.
