How old were you when you first discovered your passion for vehicles?
Growing up on the farm, I always helped with servicing tractors/combines/farm vehicles, but I would say the passion really started when I bought my first house and had the garage space to work on my own vehicles.
Would you ever lower a truck?
There are a few examples from the '80s and earlier that look OK a little bit lowered. In general, outside of a leveling kit, I don't really care for lowering or lifting trucks.
What's your preferred jam while hoonage ensues? \
I've been on an AC/DC kick for the last 7 years or so. Classic Rock and Country
What's your typical Whataburger order?
There's a reason the patty melt on the all-time favorites menu. The #2 and the chicken strip sandwich are good, too.
How do you like your steak cooked?
Medium rare
If you were to build a sleeper with a typical budget, what vehicle would you use and what power plant would you use?
My plan is to upgrade the 4.0l in my 2000 Wrangler with an LS 5.3l down the road. I'd like to use that as an opportunity to spend quality time with my son when he is a little older.
What state would you reside in if you weren't able to live in Texas?
I've always considered the Panhandle to be different enough from the rest of the state that a move to central Texas would be a sufficient answer to this question.
Most f'ed up car/driving story of your life?
When I was 17, I was driving down a paved farm road in the middle of nowhere, going about 60, when a black cow appeared suddenly. I swerved and sort of hit the sweet spot where I didn't roll into the ditch and I didn't hit the cow dead-on. I ended up hitting it in the face with my passenger headlight and the cow lived. I was furious and shaken out of my wits. The cow was just furious.
Two weeks later, I managed to ignite my gas tank port while pulling the handle out of the tank (static shock). This was on a gravity fed gas tank out on the farm, so kind of remote. Sort of a long story, but I managed to keep my wits enough to make everything as safe as I could and then fled the scene expecting a Die Hard style explosion at any second. The fire ended up self extinguishing and I was able to get most of the stains out of my underwear.
Favorite/least favorite beer?
I pretty much like any stout, especially Guinness on tap, but don't really drink much these days. Don't really care for IPAs.
Drink of choice?
Black coffee and lots of it.
What do you want your next vehicle to be? \
Something paid for. There are a few new vehicles I openly covet, though: F-150 'Booooost, G-wagon, 4-door Rubicon. And a few olds as well: '86 Chevy Short Wide, '68 Bronco, Series III Land Rover, CJ-5, or most well done late '60s muscle cars.
How many JCI chili cheese dogs can you eat in one sitting?
Probably more than most. I didn't build this body overnight.
Which car do you want to shove off a cliff? \
My first truck: '82 GMC long bed with a 305 and a 3-on-the-tree. That motor was crap and the paint was basically burnt orange.
In your opinion, what is the absolute worst modification that can be done to a vehicle?
It kills me seeing massive lifts on diesel trucks. There are worse things out there, but all I can see is how much money someone dropped on a diesel only to make it impossible to functionally use the bed or tow anything.
3 favorite car related activities?
- Driving the jeep with the top off in nice weather with classic rock blaring.
- I like some trailing. Not really looking for anything that requires a massive lift, but usually just something at or just above a stock vehicle.
- Tinkering in the garage.
