"brakes are no longer a DIY process in cars that are ~2005 and later"

It happens much faster with race and towing vehicles because they generate more heat during their braking cycles over a shorter period of time.

Joe Blow driving his Hyundai does as well...but it might take 5 yrs to achieve the same results where the fluid needs changing.

So...what was so easy about the brakes on vehicles way back in 2004 anyway?

Stainless Steel doesn't transfer heat from one end to the other like Hardened steel or aluminum does...

think about a spoon in hot soup and why it doesn't burn you...

Re:2004
Probably nothing consistently. Again, a little generalization on their (and my part). The point was that brakes now are much more expensive than just pads and rotors and its not worth it to try to a few buck and miss something (especially like a brake line cracking/rubbing).

They are also less forgiving. Pads that are specific to one side of the caliper. Retention clips, silicon grease for the slides. Any of those things will cause bad symptoms that will be felt in the pedal. Previously that was not the case and it could be done with a beer in one hand.

The inspection process is also more involved. I had a maxima that had just had the pads and rotors replaced and they would not pass it because it had a groan right before complete stop. Previously all they would flag you on was wear sensors.

That would be a good thing since you want to minimize the amount of heat transferred to the brake fluid.

Fewer moving parts.

Not really...

Exactly...so you can't mess up, otherwise it won't work.

I think I had 2 beers last time I did mine...

So let me get this right...it SO hard to grease the pins and calipers that you should pay someone to do it for you that may well also forget to grease the pins and calipers?

As for the inspection...the inspector was just ignorant.

Awh hell...fun's over...

So, he was just an inspector - not a 'scrutineer'?

Your right, those things come automatic to you (beer or no beer), they won't be so obvious to someone who is picking up a ratchet for close to the first time and tackling a brake job.

That might be the case on the inspector. But the symptom the max had was not pleasant to drive. I ended up taking the new pads and rotors off and swapping them at the parts store (fortunately they were accomodating even though there was nothing visually wrong with them.

In my original post, I was attempting to convey that the OP should consider what could happen under the possibility that the brakes did not go EASY and HE would have to deal with those as opposed to paying a LITTLE MORE and letting someone else worry about it.
I should have known it would get the hypercritical eye around here ;-)

And I had a little connectivity afterall.

Sorry I missed it, a little knowledge is a bad thing, but I don't know how valuable it is not being backed up with real world education and experience.

Thanks for the video 1ags. I wasn't sure if no one caught the joke or if it was just that I was the only twisted mind who thought it was funny.

I was pretty young back when "splatter platters" were all the rage on the radio, but I remember many of them....Last Kiss, Teen Angel, Leader of the Pack, etc.

Greasing caliper pins? Putting anti squeal shims on the pads (which are built in on many new pads)? These things happened before 04...
