Good doomsday/apacolypse vehicle?

The vehicles in Mad Max were terribly impractical - hot rods and random gas guzzlers with no room for passengers & gear. Add to that the fact that today's cars will all be disabled by EMP blasts, and it's clear we need a different list of good doomsday vehicles.

Here's what I'd want:
- rugged
- simple to maintain
- plentiful parts
- runs on unleaded gas
- no solid state electronics
- can carry a family of 4-6
- can carry plenty of zombie and/or apacolyptic gang fighting weapons, water & food
- mileage can't be TOO poor since gas will be scarce
- some off-road capability, as highways will be jammed with disabled cars

What about something like an early-mid 1970's Bronco or Suburban?

Depends on what continent you are on doesnt it?

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ55
Range Rover

I figure you could find parts for those about anywhere in the world.

82-85 Mercedes 300TD diesel wagon

can run pretty much on any oil for fuel
Seats up to 8
Rugged
Parts STILL readily available
VERY simple to maintain
Can carry plenty of sheet
Some minor offroad, but not 4WD.

Wouldn't an EMP disable your starter, alternator and fuel pump?

So 1ags, we need to store all important parts in an EMP proof container.

If you have a siphon with you you'll have access to the fuel in all of the disabled cars on the roads.

Read this froot loops post...

quote:
If you want to survive an EMP event think of this word.

Faraday Cage / Box.

I make them out of 50 caliber ammo cans and also SAW cans.

I have a spare electrical components in a 40MM can and other smaller items in the 50 and saw cans.

IE for my old cars and trucks: Battery, Starter, Alternator, Distributor.

And more for the more modern car although I'm sure one those I have neglected a component or two.

I take the rubber gasket out of the can and replace it with copper braid and solder it in to the lid where the rubber gasket was.

Then the cans are all tied to a 8 ft ground rod thats pounded into the earth.

Playing a little loose with the requirements...

Or a vehicle that get's little love:

Minus the "wood" trim of course. Or not, it's camouflage.

"Wouldn't an EMP disable your starter, alternator and fuel pump?"

On a newer car, you're probably hosed. That's why I wanted a simple, older car with no computer chips etc. I didn't think an EMP blast would disable big, robust electrical devices like a car battery or fuel pump. I thought an EMP would mainly fry microchips and smaller, more delicate circuitry. I could be wrong, though.

As far as doomsday goes, automotive transportation would be the least of my worries, though it will come in handy.

I don't know much about the EMP, but I'm assuming that most computers, etc. that are turned off will not be affected by the power surge, etc. related to EMP. If that's true, my family will have plenty of vehicles to choose from, along with plenty of generators that currently never run to keep a freezer cold for food storage, plenty of land and animals to grow fresh food, enough guns to protect said land and food, etc.

Is my assumption about being switched off wrong? There may come a day when I become paranoid and obsessive about this subject, and I'd like to plan for that day by having the knowledge to set up properly.

add: as far as killing zombies goes, I would imagine a giant wood chipper mounted on the front of my truck would suffice. Make it look like they can get at me from the front, and armor on the sides, drive to a designated zombie spot, turn wood chipper on. I don't think zombies would have enough common sense to not walk into the chipper. They're too busy thinking about eating my tasty tasty brains. I've thought about this long and hard as I worry about zombie attacks constantly.

That dude's a little on the crazy side. But he's got a flaw in his plan. A single 8' ground rod will not provide a proper ground long term. He needs three 8' grounding rods spaced a minimum of 6' apart.

A Bronco would be good.

I don't know too much about weapons so I'll defer to Buck but would a M60 mounted up top be good enough for the zombies?

I like some of these suggestions. As for zombies, I would guess anything that knocks down a regular person would knock down the zombie, but I've never been zombie hunting so I don't know for sure.

I would go with an older 4WD bronco outfitted with a 302. Sure, I could find much stronger engines than a 302, but parts would be so plentiful, you would never have a problem finding them for the rest of your life.

If I knew how to build an EMP proof container I'd go that route. That way I could have a modern vehicle and have access to parts.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Screw vehicles, I would go with a John Deere 4960...last model that had mechanical fuel injection and mechanical power-shift transmission (will keep running in the event of an EMP), it's heavy, 4WD, and you could throw all sorts of cool stuff on it for defense...even better, find one with a front loader!

For the Zombies you need to weld swords to the sides of tall van/truck. drive right by, slice there heads off. finally dead. Wood chipper would be a great accessory!
