I know that Belton seems to be the preferred school district in the area, but we live in Temple ISD. Our child will be entering the 4th grade this year and we need to decide where to put him. (He's been attending Acton Academy in Salado the past few years).

We are zoned for Raye-Allen but have put in a transfer request for Thornton. We've also applied to CTCS. Any thoughts or suggestions? Providence isn't an option because my spouse and I both work full time.

TIA

We're a Providence family in TISD. We had 0 issues with going to TISD and do our best to support the district where we can with appropriate bonds and fundraisers. We simply valued the home/family time that Providence gives us combined with the Christian values.

I speak from our research a few years back but Kennedy-Powell and Thornton were the more desirable elementary schools and Bonham for JH. .

Plenty of friends, who have enjoyed CTCS, and had a good experience there. My son from Providence has several friends there that he loves. YMMV, but it was just out of our price range and we really liked the home days Providence gave us.

My little cousin has gone to CTCS every year and will be a senior next year. The $ is absolutely insane to me, but him and his parents are happy with his experience.

Providence family zoned for Thornton--we have heard great things about Thornton from our neighbors. Similarly to cjags, we did not choose private school to avoid public school, but for Christian classical pedagogy and because of our desire to be more directly involved in our kids' schooling. We made that decision in 2010, however, before Covid learning loss and the associated low teacher morale really devastated our friends in public schools. The experience for an average kid at an average school is almost entirely dependent on getting a good principal from what I hear.

As far as making Providence work with two full-time working parents, we do offer a Wednesday program through 6th grade, and the kids are in school three days a week beginning in fifth grade. So it'd really be Mondays where you'd need to figure out something else from 5th-12th grade. In the beginning, almost all of our families had a stay-at-home parent, now I'd say less than half do.

I happily recommend CTCS.

I am interested to hear your thoughts on Acton. I serve on finance committee and can't really figure out how a for-profit school could ever really work.

One more thought--

On the narrative that Belton public schools are superior to Temple, I think it's important to acknowledge there's probably a decent amount of racism beneath that idea, though that opinion is probably influenced by my Beaumont upbringing. The cities of Temple and Belton are so geographically close and socially interconnected, it's a little silly IMO to say that schools in Temple are "dangerous" (especially when most of Belton ISD lies in Temple anyway). Like most public schools, there's a big disparity between what kids in IB/AP classes are getting and what average kids are getting.

TISD is hands down better.

As someone new to the area, this is the first I've heard of Providence. Can you explain the format?

Providence is a Christian, Classical, Collaborative-model school that combines the best elements of Christian classical schooling with homeschooling. Students in prek4-4th grade attend school with professional teachers on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and complete work assigned by the professional teacher at home with a parent co-teacher on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. In 5th-12th grade we add a third day of professional instruction on Fridays.

Temple has opted to use a free TEA classical education curriculum. Their scores have risen significantly. Yes they were lower than area ISD's for years but they are seeing success while BISD isn't, they pay for a different curriculum. BISD is also in an extreme financial crisis laying off everyone but admin. My grandson went from Sparta to Scott elementary and is doing so much better. He was Covid kindergarten kid and 1st er at Sparta.

Really intrigued by the website. We both work, but wife does WFH. How do families accommodate this without a stay at home parent?

depending on age, tutoring at the school on M&W.

we have a friend who taught very little and did tutoring until they were in about 5th or 6th grade when the kids are younger, it definitely takes more co-teaching from the parent, but the load on lower elementary students is fairly low.

as they get to about 4th-5th grade, the need to be involved as far as the complexity of work increases, but they also should have a bit more of understanding of learning from home.

our kids started in 6th and 4th. the oldest was almost entirely independent and really just comes to us for technical things by 7th grade. he's a rising senior now. my youngest is a freshman and likes to do school with my wife, but that's just a personal thing, but he could do almost all of it on his own.

so to answer the question, YMMV. i know two working parents that make it work. i know stay at home moms/dads that still lean on tutoring.

sorry I missed this! cjags did a good job explaining.

It varies greatly based on the age and maturity level of the student. The people that I know with little kids make it work by utilizing the Wednesday option at school and then completing Friday/Monday assignments over the weekend. Other people have a grandparent or paid tutor complete the assignments. Once the student gets to Upper School (5th grade), and a good bit of independence has been fostered, some kids can do most things alone and co-teacher actions can be completed in the evening. 2/5 of my kids have been able to be very independent, and 3/5 of my kids needed a lot more accountability.

Went to Kennedy-Powell but then transferred to Little-River Academy entering 5th grade. Was a great decision by my parents. Got to do everything at a smaller school.

My wife and I almost did that but with Rogers, but ended up not. One is at Lake Belton high and the other at Lake Belton middle and they are thriving.
