One word adequately described the Pizza Inn decor, uniforms, jukebox --- GROOVY!

You are soooo young.

Nothing beat the lunch counter at the downtown Woolworths after mom went grocery shopping at the A and P.

No one on here is older than dirt.

Also remember that many would treat themselves to the cafeteria at the greyhound bus stop. Fine dinners were at the Kyle hotel.

And I went to my first movies at the Arcadia.

3rd, I didn't live in Central Texas but definitely remember lunch counters at various stores!

When we moved to Waco JCPenney was still downtown with a wide "staircase" in the middle of the store...creaky wood floors below carpet!

A furniture store had the open elevator cage to their second floor. Lunch counter in the Raleigh Hotel that is now home to State of Texas offices and my daughter's office!

The Roosevelt Hotel, the streetcar and all the activity of a swanky downtown was to be had.

What was that Mexican place north of downtown set up like a cave? El charro or something?

El Chacho was the place! It was on 1st or 3d, few blocks north of Adams. Nobody remembers that place?

El Cha Cho was on French & Third wasn't it? That was the place in the 70's.

Another good Pizza place was Paddington's next to HEB where the Whataburger is now....

I also miss the Polar Bear-Ashburns Ice Cream Place.

This is one of the best threads ever on the Central Texas forum.
Just on this page:
1)Sorges was the best Italian in town. Also loved weekends when the Sorge brothers' band played. Good fun.
2)The Chuck E Cheese little door for kids to enter was greatness when I was a kid.
3)My dad did the accounting for Pizza Inn and played on the "company" softball team. I was just a kid, but they had a gathering after every single softball game with the great pizza buffet, awesome root beer for the kids, and of course the keg beer for the adults.

Great memories overall!!

El Chacho!!!

That was an amazing place (best sopapillas I have ever had). Too bad it was a huge fire hazard.

BTW, I used to get my school shoes (driving in from Cameron) at Floyd's in downtown Temple (I think it was called Floyd's). It was near what was then First National Bank (now Extraco).

I got my Easter dress, sometimes, at a little shop NEAR El Chachos in North Temple.

None of y'all remember that big damn cow at Sirloin stockade looking at you as you drove on I-35? Clem had a smaller one that was kind of staring back at the bigger one across the highway.

Golden Dragon on Adams & about 25th. If you remember that, you may be showing your age!!!

Why do I keep making new posts when I could have put all that in one post?

I remember Golden Dragon, and yeah, it was Vera Lee's. My mother liked those kind of shops and made me wear lacy dresses/frills. Trust me, I hated those.

Your multiple posts appear to be post-padding, to me.

There's a cow on some building on the I-35 frontage road now. Is that the Sirloin Stockade or Clem Cow?

Cru,

The mention of the western artwork at the 31st street McDonalds reminds me of the old What-A-Burger in the mall.....had sadles for some of the seats.....when I was about 4 that was the coolest thing I ever saw!

Pablo - fify

Aw, man. Just saw your correction. I didn't want you to correct it. I was laughing because we called it "Waterburger" when we were kids! Heck, I STILL call it Waterburger!!!

Yes, my best clothes came from Vera Lees. And I also dressed my kids there when they were little. I miss that place.

I was hard to fit in shoes though. Had to go to Cinderella in Waco to get the super narrows I needed back then. When it was in Downtown.

I remember movies at the Arcadia.

And all those eating places.

At least we still have Jody's.

Y'all could afford Vera Lees? Y'all must have been rich!

The Arcadia!!Had forgot about that place. And the Texas theater around the corner! (no, not the x rated dive next door). You kind of hoped the place didn't fall down on top of you during the show!

The Arcadia is still there, waiting for someone with money to renovate it. It is a trash bin right now.

Never got to see the Arcadia in operation so I really wish it would get renovated so I could see it now....My dad used to have an office at one time right next door in the old Hahn Hotel building....and worked at City Lumber Co. before that. That was a cool place!

Pablo, I can't help but still call it Waterburger to this day....LOL

And you have to add shopping at Cheeves to those downtown memories. I remember mom buying her dress for my cousin's wedding there. It was ivory lace.

Coach Mac - I'm glad you brought up Veterans cafe. Great food, but we also have some great family stories from eating in there when we were little kids with our parents. I believe I made my little sister so mad at me once that she picked up the squirt bottle of catchup and squirted it in my ear. Ha. I still remember the awesome food to this day though.

I just thought of another one. My wife and I had our first date at the Market Street Cafe and the night I ask her to marry me, it was one of the stops on our "scavenger hunt" that I put together for her, where I left roses and a little card at special places from our dating time. Great dip before the meal, fried corn on the cob, shrimp, etc. Good, relaxed atmosphere. I miss that place. Not too fond of the new establishment.

97,

Market Street was a good one.....

I also like G Willie's Sports Bar much more than Bum's now....
