My wife has an interview tomorrow with Chevron there in Beaumont and has an 90% chance of getting the job there. We live in CS and I am head of irrigation out at Traditions golf course. Could any of you point me in the right direction as to where to look for a golf/turf related job? Also could any of you point us in the right direction on where to look to buy a house (good/bad areas to live in).

can't help with the job, but I can tell you not to live in Beaumont... Lumberton's probably a good place to start

Any of the sorrounding cities are good to live in. Nederland, Port Neches, Lumberton, wherever. Lumberton is a lot closer, Nederland/Port Neches are about 30 minutes away. Not a bad commute.

There aren't a lot of golf courses around here. There's Iron Oaks and that's all I know about. Try Google maps maybe? They often have golf courses outlined.

I should add that Beaumont has been having a huge crime problem lately. Random shootings and all sorts of weird stuff.

there are some really nice places to live in beaumont & i'm sure you can find a nice golf course to take care of.

if not, i would try nederland. there is a lot of $$ in nederland & since a lot of dr.'s live there, i'm pretty sure there are some nice courses around.

Beaumont is a great place to live. The West end of town is the best part to live in. Lots of housing being built for a reported 15,000 jobs opening up in the next few years. The little country communities like Lumberton and such are growing but they all still have to come to Beaumont for shopping and eating, and well, they are just little country towns. The Brentwood Country Club on Major Drive and The Beaumont Country Club on Pine come to mind. There is a course at Tyrrell Park and also in Pinewood(Idylwild). Lamar University has a history of awesome, nationally ranked golf teams too. If you go to Remax.com or ColdwellBanker.com look under the 77706 or also 77707 zip codes. Good Luck to you guys.

Aggiechick, I think that is Idlewild thats slyaggie mentioned. The Brentwood country club is very nice as well as the Beaumont country club. There also is Terrel park as already mentioned, Bayou Din, and Belle Oaks Country club (that one is kind of far away). As far as place to live, there are alot of nice places in beaumont. Lumberton is growing like crazy, but there is also alot of traffic coming into Beaumont from there everyday. I live in Port Neches and work in Beaumont and its about a 25 min drive for me.

Belle Oaks is not a golf club. It's a pasture with 18 holes stuck in random locations.

Bevil Oaks is outside of Beaumont on 105. Idlywild is the course near Bevil Oaks.

You also have Bayou Din (on the east side of I10).

I used to live in SE Texas, and of all the towns around Beaumont, I would've loved to live in Nederland. Great people, great education system, great athletic program. The crime rate is extremely low, and I dont think the price of property is very high either. It's a good place to live.

PN-G is quite similar, but the 'Dogs have been dominating Mid County Madness recently. If you don't know about that rivalry, you will soon be indoctrinated if you move into either school district.

My grandmother has lived in Big Ned since before WWII. She wouldn't dream of moving anywhere else.

A&M-related fact: Elwood Kettler was one of the Nederland football coaches when my dad played there in the late 50s.

Isn't that place on 105 called Pinewood?

I think it used to be Pinewood, and the neighborhood may still be called that, but the golf course changed to Idylwild. Sort of like how Willowcreek became Brentwood when it was bought.

We looked around for a place to live that was beneficial to the children. If you plan to go private school for your children, then Walden Road has some possibilities (Brentwood Country Club is there.) Stay out of Beaumont Public Schools!!!

If you want to go the public school route. Nederland has the best ones around (IMO) Our children have really blossomed there, and the people are really something.

Lumberton also is a growing community, but I would hate to have to drive on a highway that is not ready for the expansion that is occuring there. Traffic just does not flow.

Port Neches would be my second choice, but as was previously mentioned, the DOGS eat their lunch.

I have lived in Victoria, Houston, Tulsa, Round Rock, Hewitt and Nederland since I graduated from school and my current home is my favorite. GO BULLDOGS!!

Agreed, but I wouldn't let mine into nederlands school system either.

Illd take them to Vidor or LCM first. Mom teaches in Vidor's school system in fact.

I have heard that about LC-M but not Vidor. Everyone that I meet from Vidor seems to be really friendly, and nothing like the reputation.

If you're looking for acreage in a neighborhood with nice homes, there's a new subdivision between Beaumont and Lumberton at the end of Keith road, just south of Hwy 96/69.
cgh1999

The problem there is that he'd have to live near you Kyle.

Those are nice homesites at the end of Keith Road, but if it floods again like it did back in October/November, good luck getting back there. But, if you want to risk it, it is a very nice place with acreage to build a house on.

Yeah. That new water park on the Silsbee side of Village Creek had an early start in October.

I just saw that new waterpark on our visit to Lumberton over Christmas. Hope it doesn't end up like Red Cloud Water Park did in Silsbee.

Heh. I went to Red Cloud a few times. I was a much bigger fan of the owner's previous business venture, The Lumber Company. That was some good eatin'.

Kyle99: didn't I run into you at an Astros game a while back?

cgh: Yeah I remember him. I wonder how the Downs House is right now? I'm pretty sure it is not the Den of Sin that it used to be.

Big Cat: Lumber Company was awesome! Loved the caboose! Their shrimp was some of the best around. Near the end their food got worse...kinda like the Sartin's in Beaumont that closed down.

You're wrong about that. There are stories that I've never shared about the Dirty Downs...and they are going to the grave with me.

You walked into a new and improved Downs House. A shiny revision of the original. 1991-1993 was the most corrupt and scandalous era of the Downs. That is a fact. It was also the best time of my life!

Uhhhhh, yeah...much worse. And yes, you missed out. That whole crazy period started winding down around 1995 or so. I was the last one to move out from that group....last of the outlaws.

I grew up in Nederland, graduated from Nederland High School, and am now at A&M. The area is pretty small (not a lot to do) but you can always drive to Beaumont.

Also if you want good football the Bulldogs are great. They had an off-season this year but still managed to squeak out two (I think) playoff wins.
The Cowboy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ned won one playoff game. I used to live in the area and have a good friend whose son's in the program...they had an unbelievable running back.

6'1 210 4.5...ran for like 2400 yards

also, the Ags are after LB Dravannti Johnson. He'll be a huge recruit in the state next year

I'm from the area, and the only place I'd move if I had to move back is on the West End of Beaumont. Beaumont is VERY divided when it comes to nice and ghetto. Stay west of 69/I-10.

I wouldn't move to Nederland or Lumberton because the whole benefit to me of living in a place like Beaumont is not having a commute. Affordable, safe housing exists in the city center, unlike Houston. The whole reason we even think of moving back is to do away with the commute. But that's just me.

That said, I wouldn't send my kids to BISD. The Catholic parochial school system is really good, though.
