We are heading to Galveston on Wednesday and my young son likes to ride the ferry over and back just for the fun of it. Can anyone tell me how long the wait is generally these days?

Most years, we had a limited wait. Two years ago, we waited over an hour. What's the norm right now? Thanks.

The last couple of times I took the ferry during the week my wait was less than five minutes. One time I drove straight onto the ferry without any wait. As long as you don't try to go during the morning or evening drive there shouldn't be much of a wait.

You can look up their number and call ahead to ask. Also, the TxDot signs along 45 south usually say the average wait time for the ferry. hth

You can always park your car and walk on with no wait since you are just going over and coming back.

thats the best idea; park your car at the landing and walk on and ride it back. Normal wait time now is 2 + hours. You could chance it and get lucky and not have to wait long, but 2 hrs. is the norm. Park & ride !

No it isn't.

Shouldn't be much of a wait at all during the week. Now the weekends are a different story.

Friends came over to Bolivar last sat nite. Hit the ferry landing on Galv side at 7:30. Arrived our house at 10 and we`re 5.5 miles from the ferry on the Bolivar side. Neighbor is a builder and had to go to Home Depot in Galv. Mon aft. Left after lunch, got home after supper. Waited 2 1/2 hrs on the Bolivar side and over an hour on the Galv. side. Had 3 ferries running. 2 hrs is the norm or average. You can always get lucky and hit it just right and get right on, but its luck.

Agreed. It's 11:30 a.m. on a Thursday and I just called and the man told me 15-20 minute wait.

We did end up riding the ferry while we were there last week and we waited about 35 minutes to go over to Bolivar.

On the way back, it looked to be a very long wait, but we were waved into the line where they do the full search of your car and the reward for that is that you go to the front of the line so we waited less than five minutes!

We got the car search a few summers ago (the year before Ike, whenever that was). I wish you could volunteer for that. We got out of a 2-hour wait that way (I think it was July 4 weekend).
