and the way, I don't think East Texas sucks. There are, however, some things I would like to see change.

I miss those piney woods...

Try living in the Dallas plains for a while. you will be wishing for a tree, any tree.

Baptists do not keep the counties dry, liquor stores keep the counties dry. As in the ones just across the line that make a killing from their neighbors and would go belly-up almost over night if the counties they served went wet.

Baptists own the liquor stores

So you are saying that handful of crap hole liquor stores that surround Smith county have enough power to keep the county dry. Wow. You might want to leave the meth lab in the woods one of these days.

Haha I left the meth lab for the big city some time ago, but I would take the income from any of those craphole stores any day of the week, not to mention a nice one like Fat Dogs. Don't you think they have a vested interest in seeing Smith County remain dry?

It was true in Angelina County. Whenever there was a wet/dry vote, the Baptist and "across the river" establishments found themselves on the same side of the issue and each made a big get out to vote push. Luckily the voters finally got smart and voted the County wet.

Longview just went through this. Don's was actively campaigning against the recent wet vote since it would increase his competition. To celebrate its defeat he put a hot tub next to his drive through and has bikini clad girls out there.

Pine trees give a nice paycheck every 7-9 years.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
pine trees give small paychecks for the first 15 years.

year 20 and/or 25 is where you get the nice paychecks

telephone poles bring some nice cash (more than sawlogs) at year 20

the clear cut at 23-25 is some nice jack too...sadly paying to have it cleaned and re-planted is expensive

Yeah, but for those of us not making any money off them, pine trees suck harder than Lewinski.

but for those of us w/ over 2,000 acres of them...pine trees are bueno.

Religion is not why Tyler is dry! Tyler is dry because the city wants to keep property value high. I drink, so don't get me wrong...I am on board with convenient beer...but it's a proven fact that the closer you are to liquor stores in rural areas, the greater the crime and the lower the property value. Need proof? Look at the difference in property value between Longview and Tyler! This issue is about MONEY, not religion! Besides, the 15 minutes it takes to drive to Coffee City or Kilgore is not a big deal...it's just a big deal to folks who are used to driving 3 minutes to go anywhere. (i.e. Tyler residents) I live in Dallas now and I crack up anytime "traffic" is mentioned in Tyler.

Longview is 1/2 wet.

We like to call it moist.

Well, you obviously can't explain property value differences between Tyler and Longview based solely on access to liquor stores. It would be a very small factor in the overall difference.

Demographics and geographic location are much more indicative of that.

East Texas sucks because I lived there and every place I lived in sucks. As soon as I leave an area the level of fun is lowered (along with the crime rate.

I used to live Texarkana and it sucks as bad as any town in the history of towns.

hmmmm....this is a toughie...i agree that it pretty much sucks. I was born and raised in Marshall, but now live in Dallas. Its hard to put a finger on what exactly makes east texas "SUCK"

I'll try...

1. the population of single people in their 20's - 30's is almost non-existant

2. percentage of people who graduated from college is pretty low

3. not many good bars

4. narrow minded country people

5. Marshall is not dry...so the "Tyler being dry argument" doesn't apply here...but the lack of bars does

6. go to Wal-Mart..any Wal-Mart in East Texas....you'll see

I am new to Tyler and it definitely sucks (they don't even have a good bbq restaurant) - but it's not as bad as Lufkin.
I stopped at the Wal-Mart in Lufkin on a road-trip and I saw more mullet haircuts and pregnant women in one place than I have ever seen in my life. ( and yes, many of the pregnant women were sporting the mullet, in addition to the wife beater, cut-off jean wearing rednecks)

Man, you apparently haven't looked or asked anyone about good BBQ in Tyler because there is plenty. Bodacious for consistent and convenient, Country Tavern for ribs, and there are several backwoods bbq joints that are the shiznit. Seriously ask around.

Exactly - you have to drive to another town for some good bbq, Kilgore, Big Sandy, etc.
