I grew up in Lufkin, but I attended Hudson High School. We are one of the three 3A schools without a football program in the state. I feel like we really missed out. They have a good baseball and basketball team, but that's about it.

I went to Central ('83) which is one of the other 3A schools without football.

My best friend went to Hudson. Since neither of us had a rooting interest during football season, we would look for the best regional match up to watch. Of course there was Lufkin, but Alto, Groveton and Corrigan-Camden all were good back in the day.

As far as Hudson and Central not having football, I always thought it was weird. Hell, even Fruit City had a team. It wasn't until recently that an old timer told me it was because those communities wanted the schools to stay a certain color (if you know what I mean). Don't know if it's true or not, but having grown up with some of those idiots, it wouldn't surprise me.

Ahh yes Slicer, you hold the distinct title of being the only Jack team to ever lose to us.

Not that we have anything to brag about but I'm sure it was fairly embarassing for that to happen considering we pretty much have written the book on how to suck at football.

we went 0-10 that year and were literally about 10 plays away from being 7-3 and back in the playoffs

Yeah, nice guy. Little squirrely, but nice.

I just thought of a great 3A matchup. Huntington vs. Smithville. I think both programs have combined to win maybe 8 games in the past decade.

You know what's crazy, we played Hemphill my Jr. year and we both went into that game with 20+ game losing streaks. We went on to win that game 54-0, pretty much set every school record in our pitiful history and decided to play them for homecoming the following year. They were much improved the next year and after we kicked a FG with less than a minute to go to take the lead, they returned the ensuing kickoff for a TD to beat us. At that time I thought Hemphill was in worse shape than we were but they went on to have some pretty darn good years after that.

Rusk '01. My 2 years on varsity football were the only ones in about the last 20 Rusk didn't make the playoffs. We did, however, hammer Huntington both years.

I played against a damn good player from Rusk and a former Aggie, Larry Walker. He was a beast!!!!

I remember playing against him as well. That game, we were both captains for our respective teams and I remember not being all that impressed by him until he got the ball and started running.

The only more impressive player I've personally been on the field with was when we played Fairfield and I had the dubious pleasure of lining up across from Tony Brackens.

Slicer, you guys had a pretty good running back yourselves in Mark (Can't remember his first name), I think he set your school single game record against us.

yeah his soph year he had something like 1006 yds on 96 carries in 8 games

he tore up his knee at Fox Tech in SA his jr year and I think the Huntington game was the only game he was 100% for as a sr

the impressive thing about the record game was that the other rb, Archie (can't remember his last name) had, I believe, 173 yds on 8 carries

I think MY hs wrote the book on sucking at football. I was a captain of the crappiest team in the district.

My junior and senior year combined we had one win. At the time I graduated the best season in school history was a .500 season.

We were good at baseball, softball, and volleyball though.

Are you kidding me, we would kill for a .500 season, if I'm not mistaken our best record ever and most wins in a season is 3-7.

I'm from Rusk, Larry Walker was in my class. Helluva guy. I ran into him several times while at A&M and I swear the boy doubled in size after high school. He was moderately sized in h.s., but he turned into a mountain at A&M.

One of my fondest h.s. football memories was watching him our senior year score twice on accidental end-arounds against Huntington.
