Probably not much of anything, which is why most of us left our small East Texas towns, about the only thing I know of is either a Dairy Queen or a Dollar General.

I am really open to any thing right now. Just something that would allow me to move up and that pays better than my current job. I have been with my current job for 3 years now and it is a small deparment and no room for growth. I am kind of interested in becoming a landman (I have a thread about this right now on the job board) but like I said am open to any ideas. dannyag, do you know of any openings or do you have any suggestions?

I went to highschool in Elkhart and am still currently a student at A&M. If you are interested in land, there use to be a realtor out of Grapeland who was the class of '76. I am not sure of his or if he is even still around. I think his name was Joe Brown.. or something like that. If he is still around I would give him a call.

juvag108 my dad is a landman in Tyler, but most of their new landman are working in Jefferson right now i believe which is really far from Palestine. However, you might want to check out Dixon Land Services http://www.dsityler.com , I have a friend working for them that just got out of college (tech) and they just send him out to different companies to do land work for them.

You better plan on moving out of palestine if you want a real job. East Texas is not the place to find a job, unless you want minimum wage the rest of your life.

Does your friend from tech like working for Dixon? Did he have any previous experience as a landman?

I find it amusing all the people who claim you cannot find a 'real' job/career in East Texas. Yet here I am living with my wife and new daughter in a brand new 3,200 square foot home on 10 acres of land in a town of less than 1,000 people and loving it! I owe it to my career.

Don't believe the naysayers for a second. If you really want to live in East Texas and make a good living it can be done. You may have to be a little more patient than you would in the big city, but then again you won't have to fight their b.s. traffic either!

What town do you live in and what do you do if you don't mind me asking?

juvag108 - don't mind at all. I actually don't live in any town or city limits but am only 1 mile away from the metropolis of New London (population 982).

I've been in sales now for 11 years - worked for Xerox, Inc for 6 years and gained valuable experience from them but there is NO WAY I could continue selling their equipment and am frankly surprised I lasted that long with Xerox. That experience ultimately led me to a pharmaceutical sales position where I've been for the past 5 years and I don't plan on going anywhere - GREAT company, awesome career that allows me a good amount of freedom as long as I'm making my quotas consistently.

Like I said, you may have to exercise more patience when searching for a good, long-lasting career in East Texas compared to finding one quick in a large city - but if you really WANT to live the peaceful, easy-going life then it is well worth the extra effort.
