With the new UIL divisions Longview High will now be in the same district as Marshall, Pine Tree, & Hallsville. (Texas High is also in the new district)

Seems crazy to me that a town like longview (75,000 people) will be playing a town like hallsville (2,000 people) in any sport. In the new division 5 out of the 7 teams made the playoffs last year. Sounds like it might be one of the toughest districts in the state. Poor Pine Tree Pirates don't stand a chance!

We'll see about that. PT is on the way up... 4 teams make the playoffs. Could/should have beat Marshall last year.

Longview's district got tougher by moving down to 4A. The only comp they had was Lee last year.

I think it's awesome that Longview and Pine Tree are in the same district again. Those old matchups were so much fun and had such a great rivalry back in the '80s.

Granted, football will never be a rivalry again since PT has no soul.

Also, my buddy told me that the UIL realignment is dependent on what Highland Park's enrollment is. Is that true!? Basically, Longview moved down because Highland Park's enrollment changed. They are apparently the baseline everyone aligns against.

And no, UIL is not dependent upon Highland Park's numbers... That is what everyone always says, it's nonsense.

People usually take it a step further and say that the top number for 4A will always be 1 higher than Highland Park's enrollment. This year HP was under by like 40 or something.

At least you won't have to drive 2 hours to watch your kid play ninth grade basketball twice a week. Sulphur Springs and Mt. Pleasant both got screwed by the new alignment. Bigger schools, longer distances Oh Well! Look for Tyrick Rollison, the stud qb from SS, one of the top prospects in the nation. I just hope we can block enough for him this year to keep him from getting killed.

soul = black players. Kind of a joke but PT hasn't competed since we had some good black players back in the '80s.

I got the UIL alignment based on HP thing from a friend of mine who is a varsity coach at Longview High School.

I had never had that which is why I posted it. Sounded nonsensical when I heard it but I have no idea of its truth.

the real winners out of this alignment are kilgore, henderson, etc... that basically kept the same district minus a few teams.... at least until playoff time rolls around

Yeah, well don't worry... Pine Tree is much more soulful... we are getting move-in after move-in from Longview, and we are having non soulful kids move out to Hallsville and Spring Hill... the demographics are changing pretty quickly.


We like to say "This ain't your mom and daddy's Pine Tree."

PT also has a fairly good coaching staff from what I understand; if I remember correctly something like 6 guys that have been head coaches at one time or another (that number could be a lil off, not too sure)... I grew up around and played under Adams, ur not gonna find a better man or a better coach to play for than him. Mulky was also around for the 1st couple yrs I was n HS; he's another good guy.

As far as the move outs from Longview, to my knowledge, those arent the top athletes (again, not positive, havent been around the area in awhile) but Texas High is still Texas High and theres still plenty of competition to go around w/ Marshall, MP, SS, and hopefully Hallsville can find their stride again... we had the '99 crew, a handful of good players each yr thru '01, disappointed w/ the talent in '02 (Srs. couldnt play together) and picked back up w/ the '03 group for a couple more yrs.

when i was at pt, we used to have signs at our bbball games v. hallsville to the tune of "your dad works for my dad."

times have changed quickly.

Yeah, our fans used to have all kinds of stuff like that when we played Hallsville or any other surrounding school.

Now, Hallsville, White Oak and Spring Hill have or are getting all of the money due to white flight.

lol, those bball games b/t PT and Hallsville were always fun.... yall had those signs and we had signs w/ the football and last bball score on them... i can remember at halftime of the game IN PT our senior yr one of our buddies walked out to half court w/ a sign of the football scored and held it up; that was classic. Always fun when rival schools can mess around w/ eachother, especially when u know about half the ppl over there

This reminds me of the marked difference between Kilgore and some souful school in Dallas (Lincoln?) playing for the state championship a few years back.
There band and dance team could have gotten a job at a strip bar after graduation with the routine they performed at half time.
The Kilgore band played "Winter Wonderland" while the drill team, dressed like Rangerettes, did a respectable high kick routine.

Their players were quoted as saying,"we just have to show up to take home the state trophy."
Kilgore beat them in double overtime. SWEET!!!

YouBet - the Lobo vs Pirate rivalry in the 80's was awesome. I attended from 82-86. Marshall was a good rival, too.

i had some buddies on the hville bball team, but when we played them, it was always pretty ugly. whatever happened to the blonde kid from hville, he was a senior my sophmore year i believe. was your qb and point guard, heck of an athlete. arrogant as hell. i also remember the fight during the football game my sophmore year against hville. students were jumping over the fence to get after it.

back in my high school days marshall was 5A and we weren't too worried about the lowly 4A pirates and bobcats

that is a good thing bc we kicked your asses in bball every year i was there. the police escorts to the bus and out of town were money.

lets talk football...

i didn't play football with that group of losers. my junior and senior year i think they won a combined 3 or 4 games. that would have been a waste of time.

ya we can talk football (yes i played and started), we always beat PT and dominated Marshall my sr. year... of course my jr year we were the only team they beat.... that was pretty embarrassing - stupid seniors could play together to save their lives (except against PT)

but thats turning around cuz i dont know that hallsville has any classes full of athletes coming up; Plunk is a good coach and a great motivator, but its hard to perform w/o the athletes. we were fortunate to have a few good years of solid athletes while i was around. in the mean time, my ties to Coach Adams have me rooting for PT... so weird, lol

i graduated in 2000. i think his name might have been philip, or matt. can't remember. i think he ended up going to arkansas?

lol, yes, as far as varsity goes just that one year.... all the rest of the games b4 that were good close games, 7 pts or less... my class had their number throughout HS, but nobody cares except for varsity

gotcha...I haven't followed high school football much recently. I do know that marshall lost the in the state champ game in both 2004 and 2005. Highland Park kicked our tails in 05.

Boggs, thats it... it just sounded wrong for some reason the other day, but ya thats it....

ya Kilgore won state in '04 when Marshall lost to Ennis in the div. 1 finals, and Tx High won it in '02 with pretty much all juniors, they would have repeated in '03 but their quarterback got caught with pot (again) b4 the semifinals (i think, quarter or semis)so they had to play their backup... a freshman by the name of ryan mallet and barely lost to the team that went on to win it.

That was a good team, their qb was a pot head, but good, the running back, Korey Sutton, got a scholarship to Arkansas, but i haven't heard from him since (bein that mcfadden and jones were there... i would think he wouldve transferred). Then their best receiver, Nathan Jones, racked up several touchdowns in the HS All-Star game and is Texas' slot receiver, and their best LB, Chris Collins, was supposed to go to Texas, but got into a lil trouble and is at Ok St. now.

As for us, we got to play Adrian Peterson and Graham Harrell in the '03 playoffs... Ennis promptly showed us the door in the 2nd round, lol. But we put our LB, Roddrick Muckelroy on a full scholarship to t.u. He's gonna be really good when he's finished there.
