Where you staying (part of town)? What kind of grub you looking for?

Anywhere up on the Franklin Mountains should be good for pictures.

Holes in the wall/my favorite places to eat:
--Lucy's on Mesa near Executive Center for their machaca breakfast.
--Kiki's on North Piedras for their machaca plate or green chicken enchiladas.
--H&H Car Wash & Diner - I sh*t you not, some of the best food in town at a greasy-spoon diner at a car wash. (Breakfast & lunch only) -- located at 701 Yandell, north of downtown.
--G&R Restaurant - 401 E. Nevada, a couple of blocks east of Mesa, north of downtown -- awesome old-school Mexican restaurant.

Couple of other suggestions:
--Avila's - not a hole-in-the-wall, but an El Paso tradition. Several locations, but my favorite is the original at 6232 N. Mesa in NW El Paso. (Free sopapillas with honey after every meal...!!!)
--More upscale - go out to Ardovino's Desert Crossing outside of town in Sunland Park community -- steaks & Italian.

Stuff to do:
--Good museums (El Paso Museum of Art downtown across from the Civic Center, history museum next door, Holocaust Museum downtown.)
--Fun bar district on Mesa near UTEP basketball arena.
--Watch the sunset from Scenic Drive overlooking downtown on the southern tip of Franklin mountains. In the setting sun, the haze from the burning tires of Juarez gives the entire town a pleasant glow.
--Take a half-day trip to Old Mesilla (shops, restaurants, bars in old town square about 25 miles north of El Paso, just south of Las Cruces. La Posta has great New Mex green chile-flavored Mexican food, and Double Eagle steakhouse is world class.)

the in-laws live in EP and I really enjoy eating at Ardivino's. It is an upscale pizzaria. TONS of beer choices and really really good pizza.

I really enjoy it for lunch. It's always sunny in EP, but inside is cool and has low lighting. get a house salad and a pizza and several beers... great way to spend a couple of hours.

i think there are several in town. I always go to the one on the westside, but i can't tell you the address... i don't know my way around there that well.

I'll second that! Lived in Cruces for 5 years (long, long ago and far, far away).

Great to here Old Mesilla is still going strong. Many great memories of that quaint little village.

You wanna know why? Read the following thread:

Why El Paso Sucks

Coming from El Paso, I can say possibly the most joyous day of my life was leaving there for College Station, which has fewer people but SO MUCH MORE TO DO! El Paso only has things to do if you're above 65 or under the age of 8. Torture being raised there as a teenager.

It's easy to pick on El Paso -- and I'll admit I don't like going back there as much as I used to. It's overcrowded, the traffic sucks at rush hour, and there's not quite enough charm to make up for the crime. (I know the statistics show that crime isn't that bad there, but property crime is awful there -- cars broken into or stolen, burglaries, but maybe not as many violent crimes as a lot of big cities.)

But there is a lot to do. Go rock climbing out at Hueco Tanks, about 15 minutes east of town. Play the slots and catch the horses racing at Sunland Park. Head out to Cattleman's Steak House in Fabens and watch the sun set over the mountains, do a hay ride if you go on the weekend, then have an awesome steak.

You're 2 hours away from Ruidoso and skiing in the winter, or hiking the trails around Cloudcroft in the summer.

A 3-hour drive west and you're in the Gila Wilderness Area -- some of the greatest hiking trails and unspoiled camping in the country.

I used to enjoy taking visitors over to the bars and shops in Juarez -- but I was younger then, and it's just not even an option now for gringos or anyone from north of the border to go over there.

When I was a kid I went several times with our church youth group to Mount Christo Rey on the New Mexico/Texas/Mexico border -- a small mountain with a winding road to the top, where there's a huge statue of Christ and a great view. But I hear that gangs and thugs are bad there now too.

Yeah last couple of years pilgrims headed to the top have been robbed at gunpoint.

Been to El Paso a couple of times and thought it was a nice city. Hope they get the petty crime y'all speak of under control.

Just read Jason's thread. Damn, and that was before it got REAL bad across the border. Scary.
