We still sang Dixie in those days and General Reb roamed the sidelines. There were at least ten people in my class who went to A&M.

It's about half ghetto and half AP kids. We were decent at basketball in '04 and baseball in '03, besides that we were pretty pitiful at all other sports. It sure made losing at football a lot easier when you expected it every week.

Palo Duro '61. Things were a LOT different then - and we had Amarillo Air Force Base nearby where many of our families worked or were from... John Reddell (All-American from OU, world history teacher) was the Head Football Coach. He went from PD to Trinity Euless and became an icon of Texas coaches. Clair Mayes (also All-American from OU, math teacher) was our assistant head coach. I believe he went on to Amarillo College as an "Administrator/Councilor" for years and years and years... Don Baker – backs, ends, special teams (from North Texas State, Driver’s Ed) went on to be the backs coach at Arizona State during their years of probation. John Verkerk (NTSU, Chicago Bears was line coach, biology). Royce Hillman (WTA&MU, history) baseball coach. Frontz Myatt (McMurry) was track coach. W.W. “Windy” Nicklaus (Tceh) was principal.

Although there was a healthy rivalry with Amarillo High and Tascosa, we were all friends at Dino's Drive-in... and Brent's University Shop clothiers... Athletes then - as now - have a special bond even if from different schools.. We were in the same district as Pampa, Borger, Plainview, Monterey and Lubbock High (Played them in Jones Stadium). District 5-AAAA. Four AAAA was the biggest class (i.e., there was no Five AAAAA). Dumas (3-A) won state just about every year. Amarillo High was still in Downtown Amarillo. Caprock had not happened yet. Carver was still a full fledged High School.

Aggie1-

My daughter played soccer against PD last night. You would not recognize the school now, not only because it has soccer, but because it is 98% minority. Caprock is also heavily minority, but new housing next to Tradewind airport is going in that will change the composition.

The funny thing about Amarillo now is that you can be a citizen of Amarillo and attend school in one of five ISDs and one of nine high schools.

Bushland ISD
River Road ISD
Highland Park ISD (on the grounds of the old airbase)
Canyon ISD (Canyon High, Randall High)
Amarillo ISD (Amarillo High, PD, Caprock, Tascosa)

How would you list those schools in terms of prestige (as perceived by the local populace)?

Just curious -

BBH-

It is me CA77, posting off Dad's computer.

I assume you are referring to Academic, not athletic....It's hard to say, partially because I am prejudiced toward Canyon.

Amarillo High might be on top, because its huge size allows it to offer programs the other schools can't, such as Latin. Athletically, it shines more in the programs favored by parents who can afford "club" sports, like soccer. It probably has the richest kids, so there is a reputation of being full of snobs.

I'd put Canyon High up there, too. It has a good acadmic reputation, and great parent support.

From here on, my prejudice shows: Randall and Tascosa are in the next tier, then Caprock and River Road, then PD at the bottom.

The wild cards are Bushland and Highland Park. Bushland is brand new, adding a class each year. I think they only have 9-11 this year, this year's juniors will be the first to graduate from there.

Bushland has grown because of a lot of new development. That probably means lots of well-off kids which usually=good academics.

Highland Park is smaller and not in a great part of town, but they have a great tax base (industrial) and thus have wonderful facilities.

Caprock, by the way, has a lot of new homes in their attendance area, and a lot of good programs. I think it is on the rise.

And in my count of high schools, I didn't even think of the private ones. There are probably 4-5. I can think of San Jacinto Christian Academy, Acension Academy, and there are probably more.

AHS has to be number one in the Amarillo area, by a looong way. Facilities, size of student body, etc. certainly trend this way.

My folks tell me that Randall is coming along, and Bushland as well.

Canyon - where is the Bushland High School? Anywhere close to the station?

The rest are second tier, at best.

Oh, btw, Trashcosa sucks, still.

I believe they built the high school in beautiful downtown Bushland...in other words just east of the Experiment Station where the elementary school was "back in the day".

I think this is it

I have not been that way on a while. Bushland kids used to attend high school at AHS or Tascosa, as Bushleand only went through 8th grade.

I meant to add earlier that I intended no offense to AHS grads. Just because some folks call them snobs does not make it true. The richest high school in any area is going to get that reputation.

And you were generous in saying you worked for me...we both worked for the same guy, I was just the full time guy while you were the summer guy.

I still owe you a detailed reply to your email and catch-up on my years since Bushland....

Aggie1, You may have gone to school with my Dad ! He got out I think in 60 or 61. Some folks called him "cannon ball", some called him "Casper" because of his white '55 Chevy... most people called him "Wayne". Although when he talks drive-ins, he talks Twings.

He's small-ish, but I believe he ran the ball for PD for a while.

Ring any bells?

CanyongAg-

Thanks for the update. My impression of CISD back in the day (the 1970s) was that it was a pretty good system that could have been better (more class offerings and facilities) if they would have had the tax base to support it. The CHS campus was kind of crowded in those days, what with 1 in every 3 students being from southwest Amarillo. I was glad to hear when they opened RHS to serve the growing population in that area. And I was impressed when we drove past the new CHS campus last summer. Looks like a terrific facility (at least from the outside).

Lots of new home construction in the Canyon ISD is helping the tax base, though it also = more students. The retail areas of Amarillo are also moving south, so that will help the tax base.

The new high school is very nice, has had about 900 kids and a capacity of 1300 or so. But continued growth plus adjustment of the attendance areas means it's going to fill. This year's Senior class is about 200 kids, the freshman class about 400. The attendance areas were grandfathered, so grades 10-12 didn't have to leave Randall.

Randall is still over capacity, and probably will be even with the kids being moved to CHS.

I foresee a third high school in CISD's future, probably in south Amarillo.
