We are traveling 287 to Childress and then North on 83 later today. Has anyone heard how the roads are looking that way?

Most major roads around Amarillo are good. Your easiest check is to look at Google Maps, enable traffic, and see if it's green.

Next is drivetexas,org for the official road conditions. But Google Maps gives you immediate feedback.
