I'll ask my dad about the U-2 spy plane. He actually sent me the same link you posted just a moment ago as well. He also said that my Uncle Bud (Roberts) won state with his girls basketball team from Wayside. It included my Aunt Lucy and Aunt Neva.

I'll let you know what he says about the U-2 spy plane. There aren't a whole lot of different families out in the Wayside area, so either someone from my family or another family that we know is sure to know something about it.

No need to make a special trip for pictures. My brother still lives at Vigo Park along with my grandmother, two aunts and uncles, and my cousin over by happy. Parents are in Canyon still. So I drive by Wayside two or so times a year when I'm up for the holidays.

It's just always nice to see pics from home.

Here's more Panhandle standbys....

One of the amazing sunsets (and amazingly dirty lens, sorry)

And the ever-popular thunderstorm blowing up over someone else's county.

Wow, great pics. Thanks Canyon, and Chocolate.

I must have jinxed myself. My macbook crashed shortly after posting the request. I went back with a PC and I am just now back online.

Canyon, got a story for ya.

I was raised by a neighbor there in Hart. He carried me everywhere and taught me every vice I have to this day. He lived one mile north of Paul Armstrong. So I am sure you have passed his house. May he Rest In Peace.

His name was Jack Dyer and he was quite a Rounder and heck of a story teller.

He told me a story one time when he was in High School about playing a tournement at Wayside. He said that they did not have a gym and the tourneyment was outside on a gravel/dirt packed court. One side was not in very good shape so the ending part of the tourney they played on only one basket. Cotton Center (his team) got into the Finals. And before half time the basketball got "called" due to rain. Never heard of a basketball game called due to rain before.

This would have been in the early 50's.

Yes, Canyon, he was from Cotton Center. Near your old stomping grounds. His dad's name was Bud Dyer.

Biscuit, the computer problems caused me to miss the message that Lacy's father passed. They buried him on Monday.

Crazy how much we now depend on these devices.

Thanks again for the pics. Much appreciated.

Killer-K,

Did you see the old tractor thread over on Automotive? It had a bunch of pictures from the Paul Armstrong estate. I've got a boatload more pics from Paul's sale if you want to see them sometime.

Again, I'm stretching the definition of "Panhandle". But I figure just across the border and in land claimed by Texas in 1845 is close enough.

So yesterday, I went after some eclipse photos. Dealing with lots of cloud cover and not being under the path of totality, we went to NM, and ended up at Oasis State Park, between Clovis and Portales, and south of Cannon AFB. It is also just west of the Blackwater Draw archeology site, where the Clovis point was found.

We did take a welder's helmet, and tried some pinhole cameras (with little success) but the best thing we came up with was the binocular trick. Take a cheap set of binocs. Make a shade with one eyepiece sticking through. Place on tripod. Set up a bit of white paper behind the binocs at a right angle to the line of sight. Watch the show.

While waiting for the eclipse to develop, we enjoyed the wildlife. Saw the heron below. Also saw kingbirds, dove and swallows. Heard mockingbirds and bobwhite quail. The weirdest thing was a buzzing sound we heard like a bullet going over. A guy nearby said it was a swallow pulling out of a high speed dive. Pretty cool.

The image projected on the paper is inverted, btw.

Here's a shot at about the same time that shows the sun "right side up".

And I'm a sucker for sunset pictures. Add an eclipse, and I'm off. I think the intense red is a combination of the clouds, haze and fires in Arizona.

Keep them coming Canyon. I am not up in Chicago for the summer. So any Panhandle pics are as always appreciated.

Before we left Childress years ago, my kids played with horny toads. It is a great memory for them.

Thanks, though he is obviously a better photographer. I'm a pretty decent amateur. Maybe someday I'll buy some newer equipment and do better.

Canyon,

Time for some harvest shots this fall. My second favorite time of year. Except for the allergies it would create.
