Anyone remember Peppermint Park?

Can someone tell me what was unique about the Humble building and what it is known as today?

Not exactly Houston, but does anyone remember Sea Arama?

I remember Peppermint Park

we used to do the peppermint park gig.......i remember a building with red and white stripes.....they had a ride that was comprised of a few boats that went in a circle.....there was some sort of "roller coaster" that started inside the building, went outside, then back in again......where was that place located.....

how about that horse riding place on kirby near the dome....what was the name of that one....

610 north near 290.....that sounds about right....

there was one on 59 South thats a car garage now,

I remember Peppermint park too.

Also remember O'Farrell's at the Galleria, it was like an ice cream shop thing for kids, I remember going there for birthdays etc.

The first thing that came to mind for me when I saw the thread title was Gilley's on Spencer Hwy in Pasagetdowndena.

I remember Peppermint Park and Sea Arama. Sea Arama was pretty gross from what I remember. I got pooped on by a sea gull there on a trip with my Brownie troop. NOt a good day.

I went to Sea Arama for the 5th grade field trip. All I remember is that our teacher forgot our lunches, and we had to beg off other classes.

Wasn't that just Farrell's? They still exist in other parts of the country, just not in Houston any more. Hell of a concept. You have to pay at the cashier, and you have to walk through a candy store to get to the cashier.

And Peppermint Park was on 610 between TC Jester and Ella on the "inside" of the loop. Good times.

Andy you're probably right, I think I was in a sugar coma ever time I was there.

Anybody remember the little mini loaves of bread you could buy at Astroworld.

They were fresh and warm and all, can't remember if they were Mrs. Baird's or Rainbow. One of the two I think.

Silly me, there must have been more than one Peppermint Park and the one I recall, roughly at the intersection of I45 and 610 near the old Gulfgate Mall, probably did not survive the end of the '60s.

Speaking of Gulfgate Mall, anyone remember that place?

Howbout the movie theatre across 610, I think it was a General Cinema, with the pedestrian bridge over the freeway? My first "real" date was there watching Star Wars in initial release during the summer of '77.

I remember those bread loves at Astrowold and I think they were Rainbow.

I've camped a gazillion times in my life, but one of the most memorable was when I was about 11 or so in '72 or so when we camped along the Galveston Sea Wall at Sea Arama. Bad weather arrived and it sleeted during the night. Morning found us huddled inside Sea Arama buying hot chocolate en masse.

Still waiting for someone to tell me (from memory, not a google search) what was unique about the Humble building and what it is known as today.

How about Utotems, anyone remember those?

Yeah I remember old Gulf Gate. Remember the sign, had a Carousel on the top of it.

Also I saw Star Wars initial release at that theater across the bridge, also saw the initial release of E.T. there as well among others.

Do you remember just up the freeway from Gulf Gate towards downtown was the Oldsmobile dealer with the huge neon sign that depicted a Rocket taking off, with the motion depicted by timed lights?

Was that Bill McDavid's Oldsmobile? I remember that rocket sign. I have no doubt mom's '73 Cutlass came from that dealer. Dad's '74 Hornet, which became my 1st car, came from a dealer in that Gulfgate area too.

I think you are right on McDavid.

Remember those old commercials, during local 10PM news, and it would show all of the Oldsmobile dealers wearing suits and smiling at the camera, they would zoom in on each one and say the name of the dealership.

Also the old Texas Commerce Bank commercials were classic as well.

Peppermint Park was on 610 until it moved down to 59 by stafford. Closed up shop in the 80s.

Anybody remember Kiddieland Park? It was at the corner of Main and Kirby. Had a bunch of old rides from the 50s and some horses you could ride. A Kroger now sits on the site.

Definitely bought a beer or two at a U-TOTE-M.

I saw "Spies Like Us" there. That was a ratty ass theater.

Was the Humble Oil building the one that had the "weather ball" on top of it that would change colors depending on the forecast?

edit- Well, that was actually the Texas National Bank building. And i cheated by using Google...The Humble Oil building was the first air conditioned building in Houston and it is now a Courtyard by Marriott. Also, you'd have to be a way old school Houstonian to remember the Humble building as the first building with A/C. It was in the 30's.

Humble building was the first with AC in Houston, and for a time was the tallest building west of the Mississippi, IIRC.

I have a vegue memory of going to Peppermint Park (I remember the buildings with the pink and white stripes). For some reason my memory of that place is somewhere off of 90 in the Stafford area between Dulles and where the Beltway is now. I have a memory of a hay ride.

I also have a vague memory of Searama. Wasn't it off of the beach somewhere past Moody Gardens?

Deep I think Searama was off of seawall blvd, so yeah it was right off the beach, you would take 61st street to the seawall hook a right and it was a ways down on the right, if I am remembering correctly but it was definitely off seawall blvd.

Moody Gardens is on the back side of the island facing I believe Offats Bayou.

i believe there is construction where the old sea arama was now.
Anyone remember Fame City?
(I realize I am but a baby compared to most of y'all)

We had b-day parties at Peppermint park in the early 80's. I remember my dad took my and my sis there once and I threw up my dinner after riding some spinning thing.

Also went to Sea Arama. I have pics of me in front of the place with striped socks pulled up to my knees and the chili bowl hair cut. ha!
