Somewhat off topic, but it's always interesting to me -- as a lifelong Houstonian -- to see how many people on here (and in the real world too, I guess) associate Houston with rappers and purple drank and those stupid wheel spinner things.
I guess it's because I'm an old and a suburban kid. I still think of oil and space and the trail rides/rodeo.
local oil jobs have declined considerably and isnt the default industry for those who live in Houston. Space always felt kind of niche unless you lived in Clear Lake. Austin is about to have more space related jobs with all the companies popping up around there to skim talent from SpaceX. Trail Rides and rodeo is a fun reminder of the area heritage, but its not a defining charateristic of Houston any more. The Rodeo is still huge and sells out, but the people who identify with western/rodeo as their lifestyle and culture keep moving further and further out of town or keep getting pushed out of town as more and more suburban development continues. Katy is on the verge of having no farmland left.
I definitely understand all that. Changing times have left a void as to what Houston represents, and what represents Houston.
It's just weird to think that spinny wheels and some drink made out of cough syrup are widespread enough to fill the gap.
The truth is that most modern U.S. cities today have no shared culture. We're all just a wretched hive of scum and villainy, rootless and unconnected.
That being the case, I think the team should be called "Aeros."
