And not leave a 23 car length opening in front of you in congested traffic so every ******** in all other lanes can cut in and you F over the people behind you

There's actually a benefit to leaving some space in heavy stop-and-go traffic. On 610 W between 59 and i10 riding the car in front of you's ass just creates the classic 40 mph 10 mph 40 mph 10 mph accordion effect. Every little brake tap gets amplified backward and eventually creates a stop.

If you instead leave some space and maintain a steady 1520 mph when traffic allows, you can absorb those speed changes without constantly braking and accelerating. That keeps traffic moving more consistently and can actually reduce the stop-and-go wave.

Obviously, leaving a ridiculous 23-car-length gap is going to invite people to merge into it and can screw over the people behind you. But there's a big difference between that and leaving enough following distance to **smooth the traffic instead of becoming part of the accordion.**

On 610, sometimes going 15 mph consistently is genuinely better for everyone than going 40 10 40 10.

The worst is the people who leave a huge gap but rather than use it as buffer they slam on their breaks to maintain the huge gap.

Got caught behind someone like that a couple of weeks ago. Every time traffic slowed ahead she would slam on her brakes to make sure to stop way behind the car in front of her, rather than using all that room to slowly decelerate.

The third world views traffic laws as suggestions. You import them into a city where its citizens do obey traffic laws and there's going to be mayhem. Plus half of them are unlicensed, driving unregistered cars, without insurance.

I would assume diversity is directly proportional to road rage.

I assure you, the citizens weren't obeying traffic laws before Houston became immigrant heavy. I remember when the left lane of the Katy Freeway meant you better be going at least 80 or get your ass ran off the road.

That is a traffic law. Ever see the sign "Left Lane for Passing Only"? Your speed is irrelevant. Do not use the left lane unless you are actively passing someone.

I don't camp in the left lane going the speed limit as I'm not an ass, but your speed is absolutely relevant if youre going 15 over and get rageful because someone who is going 5 over has the audacity to exist on your personal highway

Is that on the sign? Left Lane for Passing Only unless going 5 over.

No, but that car going 5-10 over is going to need to pass someone eventually and without fail on grand parkway around 290 there is always a pickup going 15 over or more that approaches the car making its pass and gets in a fit of rage that they have to go from 85 to 70 for a few seconds.

People who drive with their hazard lights on during a rain storm should have their DL stripped and revoked.

I had someone put their hazards on because they were coming up on stopped/slow traffic on the highway. turned them off after they started moving.

Why is that not appropriate? Truckers do it all the time to warn people behind them of an unexpected slow down. I do it.

You may not be in the left lane unless you are ACTIVELY passing someone, not "eventually". Not hard. If you are not in the process of passing someone, you may NOT be in the left lane. Move over. When it's time to pass, you may get back in the left lane, make your pass, then move back over.

20 mph over the speed limit is reckless to a sane person. Considering that they normally have to weave in and out of traffic to maintain it id say it is absolutely reckless. If it is Sunday morning then fine it isnt reckless. You happy now?

If idiots wouldn't camp out and instagram in the left lane and pay attention to the world around them, 95% of all road rage goes away. I pass as much in the right lane as I do the left lane because most people honestly should not be driving anything at all, much less a car on the highway.

As it is, you either get stuck behind Juan and the 6 other guys crammed into the landscaping truck pulling a trailer full of grass, leaves and brush doing 15 under in the left lane because Juan is on his phone and that is totally more important than anything.

Or you get behind La'Qui'Sha and her eagle talon nails poking along either cackling on the phone giving no F's about anybody because the world revolves around her (sometimes that may be true, but because of the laws of gravity) or taking pics for her snapchat and instagram instead of driving.

Or you get behind D'Qwan'pop in his 1990's caddy with slabs who just doesn't care about a damn thing because he's all hard and gangster and sht and this is his way of sticking it back to the crackers

Those 3 categories account for about 70% of all left lane and/or traffic buttholes

The remaining 30% is Tesla drivers, cops, people in company trucks that are GPS monitored for speed (usually on the phone) and some rando set of old people that are just poking along like every day is Sunday.

3 things changed would alter the entire landscape of driving (and not just Houston, pretty much anywhere there is an urban area):

1. Stay the F off the phone
2. Left lane for passing
3. Pay attention to the world around you and drive in a manner that doesn't impede traffic and allows others to get around you with little to no issue.

You can't do anything about the brodozers nor the fact that TXDOT is functionally ******ed.

Your stance is tautologically indefensible. Everything you say can be flipped on you. Just stop embarrassing yourself. Just concede someone passing a car going 70 in your precious left lane is tolerable in society. And really IS NOT SOMETHING TO FREAK OUT OVER. Oh no you will get to your destination 10 seconds slower. The horror.

It is not your job to enforce speed control.

But it is your job to enforce left lane rules?

I can't without pit maneuvering you out of the way.

so all this back and forth proves my original point. No one was following the rules of the road to begin with. Yall just mad that there are even more people on the roads that don't follow your preconcieved notion of the road rules. Now if traffic enforcement did more to deal with these left lane campers and texing while driving folks, it would improve things a bit.

I think their point is this.

Anything that negatively impacts them is bad. Anything that positively impacts them is good.

So if we just maximized our existence for what is best for them then we would all be in agreement. When you think about it, it is really us who are being selfish.

Why can't I have a Phantom Wedge. It would solve so many problems and eliminate drivers who should not be on the road.

You may not be in the left lane unless you are ACTIVELY passing someone, not "eventually". Not hard. If you are not in the process of passing someone, you may NOT be in the left lane. Move over. When it's time to pass, you may get back in the left lane, make your pass, then move back over.

It's really hard to enforce left lane rules if you (wait for it).......follow left lane rules. But don't let that fact get in your way.

This really makes no sense. It is also really hard to enforce speeding rules if you (wait for it) ..... follow the speed limit.
The horror.

If this makes no sense to you and whomever else starred it.....quit driving. Do the entire world a favor. For the good of all of humanity, please.

Because you have zero understanding of what you said and my response to it.

Maybe you should drive faster and we woudlent be so angry

And get the F off of your phone
And stay the F out of the left lane unless you are actually passing
And not pace the car next to you in the lane so that nobody can get around you or them
And not leave a 23 car length opening in front of you in congested traffic so every ******** in all other lanes can cut in and you F over the people behind you
And not be a large Canadian woman, landscaper or Canadian gangster wannabe

You know, pretty basic things that drive everybody around you on the road into a rage.

I thought I was the only one who got pissed off about this...

Also add the idiot in front of you who is tailgating someone and constantly brake checking without slowing down, so you don't know when they REALLY are slowing down. It's worse in the dark and/or you can't see the traffic in front of them.

At night I've occasionally flashed my brightes at these guys but only one or two seemed to understand what I meant and stop doing it. Feel free to try this yourself, so maybe it will be a thing that catches on.

Never thought I would say this but there are not enough cops on the freeways here. The amount of people doing 90 swerving in and out of traffic has reached an untenable level.

I think a few of those people post on this thread. It isnt their fault people drive in the left hand lane only going 10-15 mph over the speed limit.

it's a great combo with the folks blindly veering to the middle lane so they can peak at 40 MPH.

Nope, it's the idiots fault for cruising in the left hand lane thinking they are the traffic Barney Fife's.
